Street Style Thursday: Hollis Sigler Opening, Angel Otero Work Displayed at Chicago Cultural Center

me & artist Angel Otero pg.jpg

While I did love the idea of bumping into celebs in Palm Springs at gallery openings, Chicago does provide plenty of glitz and fun also.  Recently I went to the Hollis Sigler opening (Jan 23- March 28) at the Chicago Cultural Center. It was packed with artists, students, art lovers, and people who enjoy free wine along with free admission. Having purchased a Hollis Sigler for my home early on in her career, it was so rewarding to see the attention she continues to garner even after her death with her beautiful images.

Puerto RIcan born Angel Otero, a recent MFA grad of the Art Institute is one of the hot new darlings and rising star that everyone is buzzing about in the Chicago art world and whose work was on display (Jan 23-March 28) on the 4th floor gallery. It will be fun to watch his progress!

Palm Springs: My Favorite Restaurants, Hotels, Art Galleries, and Activities with Friends

Viceroy Hotel1.JPG

I can't stop talking about my recent trip to Palm Springs because I feel in love with the mountains, the orange trees and the old and new. On my first night I attended the opening reception at IMAGO GALLERIES. I just missed seeing Meryl Streep & her daughter as her husband Don Gummer's work was on display along with Robert Graham. That fabulous blond was his model for several of the sculptures, check the pictures below. I loved the wood works of Charles Arnoldi.

Of course for activities, Palm Springs is a golfer's paradise; they never seem to walk, using only their designer golf carts, but they also bike, walk and my favorite, croquet. The scenery is an artist's inspiration.

At the flea market I tested the makeup and admired all the necklaces & bracelets which always attract me like a magnet. If you want to feel you are sipping champagne with Frank & Dean, check out the Viceroy Hotel which was featured in Vogue, with Kate Hudson. I love the black & white stripped sofas & the pool area. The Parker, formerly owned by Gene Audrey & later Merv Griffin, has a cool restaurant named Norma's where the entire L.A. crowd hangs out on the weekends. Of course the dress code is blue jeans. Ace Hotel is a fun place for breakfast with more of that vintage feel. For my last night, my friend Sam Cardella, architect/designer to the celebs & a former Chicagoan, took me to another vintage restaurant, Omri Go Med, in Palm Desert for some of the best calories I have ever inhaled. Don't miss the eclectic vintage one-of-a-kind art objects at my friend Jim's store, formerly from Fertile Delta in Chicago. The best book to view the magnificent vintage homes is, Palm Springs Living by Rizzoli with my friend,  the principal photographer, David Glomb. I also loved being with all my fun friends in Palm Springs who made my trip so memorable.

Thursday Street Style: Jogging Suits & Jeans in Palm Springs

Last week I took a mini holiday to Palm Springs to escape Chicago's cold weather. I love the snow-capped mountains and the beautiful orange and grapefruit trees. Yes, I agree that there are lots of retired older people that golf or play tennis five days a week, wearing jogging suits and clothes that I would pass on to the local Salvation Army. But, I did find some great looking people at unexpected places like the flea market, restaurants, art galleries, and vintage hotels like the Viceroy that was featured in Vogue magazine with Kate Hudson. Lots of former Chicagoans seeking the sun also. Like most places in the country there is the cool crowd and the ones that find life just plain boring...

**Have a look at the gallery to see the photos from my trip and see a variety of looks from the very stylish & fun, to those trying too hard. Let me know what you think!  Be sure to check back here tomorrow for Accessory Friday!**

Accessory Friday: Gloves, Gloves, Gloves!

Accessories Are a Must: Gloves

Wearing gloves has always been a fashion statement for me.  My mother never left the house without gloves, even if she was just going to lunch with the ladies.  (Of course, she also wore pantyhose in 90° weather because that was her definition of a lady.)  Today gloves are taking on a new twist and lucky for me, I have a large shoebox dedicated to my glove collection.  From Michael Jackson's "one glove" to Michelle Obama wearing "the green gloves" (from Banana Republic) at the inauguration--gloves are definitely "in" again for all the Chicago fashionistas. I am a big fan of wearing fingerless gloves layered over fingered gloves for a look that can be unique. Whatever you do, have fun with this accessory, as there are so many choices this season.

**Visit the gallery below to see how Chicagoans--and celebrities alike--are wearing their gloves...including a look at some of MY favorites!  How do YOU wear your gloves?  Leave me a comment and let's talk!**

NYE 2009: Party at the Elysian Hotel

The lobby at the beautiful new Elysian in Chicago:

It was a girl's night out for me at the new beautiful Hotel Elysian before joining my husband.  The old rules about staying home if you didn't have a date were left behind in the last century.  It was all about having fun with your friends, husband or a date.  The Balsan bar was a perfect spot to launch the start of my celebration with the help of the charming general manager Andreas Schreiner and my friends Doris and Marian.  The women were dressed from chic to casual, some with formal gowns and feathers and some with a great pair of blue jeans. It was all about finding your own comfort level and staying warm on a very cold evening.

What a fabulous night to celebrate a fantastic New Year...

**Have a look at the gallery to see photos of some dear friends and I, as well as some New Years Eve fashions from the Hotel Elysian...(and don't forget to have a peek at the other NYE parties from all over the city!)**

MCA: Art to Make You Think

works of Ettore Sottsass JPG.JPG

If you love fashion, you have to follow art as so many designers are influenced by the art world. As I mentioned when I went to the event "First Friday" at the MCA I saw the amazing exhibit called "Italic," Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution. 1968 - 2008. When you are viewing the exhibit, be sure to notice the work of Ettore Sottsass who was a former architect & co founder of the design group Memphis. One of the pieces I cherish in my home was a gift from my parents of a very colorful clock from the Memphis Group. The show claims that Sottsass used forms, colors & materials to undermine traditional definitions of good taste. I always love both clothing & art that share a sense of humor. Also check out the work of Ugo Mulas, whom I first uncovered at the Venice Biennale Exhibit and the exhibit of Alexander Calder.  We are so lucky to have outstanding museums in Chicago

'Cliche' at the Museum of Contemporary Art

It was a cold, cold night in Chicago but it was hot, hot, hot inside the Museum Of Comtemporary Art's monthly First Fridays event named Cliche. Over 1700 people gathered to hear music from the local DJ's, nibble on Wolfgang Puck's appetizers and experience the  iMac G5 digital dating bar among other activities. Of course, being happily married, I was there just to see the fashions and take a long peek at the amazing art exhibit called "ITALICS."  (I promise to show you some of my favorite images from the show later)  And what was the signature look of the evening on most of the women? You guessed it....the color black which I told you worked best for the Thanksgiving Day holiday on my video. Let's face it, black is the perfect color for any ocassion. I did think the one dress that was a standout in the crowd was silver. And some of the guys in the crowd were equally creative.

Diane von Furstenberg Resort/Spring 2010 at Neiman's Chicago

A large crowd arrived at Neiman's on Michigan Avenue lat week to meet Diane von Furstenberg, the queen of the "Wrap Dress," and to see her latest collection for Resort/Spring 2010.  She continues to charm her followers after first introducing her famous wrap dress decades ago.    Her new collection was inspired by Rio (maybe she had an inside tract to the 2016 Olympics) that included 40/50's style bathing suits, prints, neon brights and lengths that covered minis to cocktail length.  I loved the one-shouldered dresses and the black and white jumpsuit.  DVF told the crowd that she likes to make women feel confident and she sees her clothes as friends for your closet.  Yes, they are very sexy, wearable and empowering.  And, did I mention that we all received a canvas "Proud to be Woman" DVF bag?  It really was a special night!

Zara Store Opening Party

Ryan, me + Zara execs from Spain.JPG

With all the depressing news we hear daily on the economy, it was very exciting, and refreshing, to party at the press/pre-opening of Zara on Michigan's Magnificent Mile.  The beautiful new store, which has all of the latest trends at affordable prices, is a welcome addition to the retail scene in Chicago.  The local fashionistas came out wearing some very cool clothes to join in the celebration.

      Lake View High Students

Of course you know I love fashion and some of my best ideas or inspirations come from what I see on the streets of Chicago - more specifically, what I see students wearing on the streets of Chicago.  I've always loved the youth of Chicago - thats why it was so cool that I got to be "Principal for the Day" at Lake View High School, with incredible students, teachers and parents!  It was so inspiring to be around all those students with such enthusiasm and positivity - it really was a great day!  I was one of 5 "Principals" chosen to take part in this special program, including Ch. 5's Alex Perez, designer Anna Fong, Ald. Ariel Reboyras, and former LV High School alumni Dick Schroeder.  Anyways, it really was a special day for me - not only do I love spending time with children but it was fun to be back in a High School environment - not to mention some of my best ex-boyfriends were Lake View students!
