Street Fashion: Is 2 always Better than 1?

beyonce_swimsuit_picture-1253557581.jpg
In the case of swimwear celebrities have proven that a 2 piece swimsuit does not always have to be better than 1.  We have seen celebrities from Beyonce to the Kardashians make a 1 piece just as classy and sexy at the same time.  We can all benefit from a 1 piece as it can cover up  and hide our flaws.
This summer season has had a slow start, but memorial day has definitely proven that summer is amongst us.  I expect metallics, prints, bright colors, cut outs, and bandeau's to be the most popular trend.  One of my most popular trends is mix matching the 2 pieces.  So don't be afraid this summer, show your style through matching a print top with a metallic top.

In or Out: Rompers, a Shorts Alternative

Lively, Meester, Simpson.jpg

As the weather heats up in Chicago the clothes become less and less. Shorts are of course are a practical and fashionable way to withstand the heat. In the past couple years rompers have popped up as another fun summertime fashion. I personally love the way that you can wear one for formal occasions or casual ones. So which romper is best for which occasion? It all depends on the material or cut of the romper and the accessories. When wearing one for formal events a silk romper with a blazer and heels is nice, if it is too cold for shorts you can always add a pair of tights. Celebrities such as Hayden Panettiere, Kate Moss and Kourtney Kardashian like this look. In more casual settings cotton or jersey are nice materials for the romper, paired with wedges or sandals. Either way you wear them I think that rompers are a great alternative to shorts for the summer, what do you think? Are rompers still in or are they out?

Trend Spotting: Mini vs. Maxi

The age old question of Spring fashion is back, Mini v. Maxi? Celebrities are pressed with the question every time they leave the house. In the most recent Gossip Girl episode Blake Lively, aka Serena, wears a micro mini bandage skirt and in Sex and the City the lovely ladies work colorful Maxi dresses on their tropical get away. So which one is best for Spring? I personally think it depends on the occasion and of course your body type. Maxi dresses look great on most body types. I love pairing them with big 70's inspired bangles and platforms. Some stars even like wearing Maxi dresses while pregnant and why not? They are comfortable and flattering. When wearing a micro mini I think that it is important to understand proportions and of course your body type! I like the way Fergie wore her mini dress with a long boyfriend blazer. What do you think? What is your favorite way to wear a Mini or Maxi dress?

Fashion: Red vs. Pink Hot or Not

red lips
As we all know bright colors are in style this season. The scheme of colors is far from limited to just apparel.  Celebrities have taken it a step further by literally speaking their fashion sense.  Through most of the winter months we often saw red lips that still seem to pop up here and there on the red carpet.  However, we now see that pink lips are speaking for themselves and also making an entrance.

Both colors are risky and require just the right personality and fashion sense to match.  Not everyone can pull off the risky colors, and one may be better than the other on some.  You have to be just as careful with choosing just the right tone for the right time and place.  Red can be more of a evening accessory and portrays a more sexy image, where as pink is more playful.  When we see pink we typically think of Barbie, but with just the right tone it can suddenly turn into a more seductive approach.

In or Out: Shorts!

large_celebrity-shorts.jpg

Hot hot Chicago heat always leads to short short shorts! Celebrities and Chicagoans alike are wearing all different types of shorts. The versatility of the shorts are what I love the most. Whether they are tiny jean cut-offs or high waisted dress shorts celebrities are loving them and why not with legs like those! I personally love the way high waisted pleated shorts are coming back in style with short crop tops, I was in H&M the other day and they were showing a lot of those at an affordable price! Some of the micro shorts are too short for my taste, but what do you think? Are shorts in or out?

In or Out: Stripes

Up, Down, Around, Zig-Zag! Striped clothing pieces seem to surface every few years. And why not, since they are very flattering on most people, depending on whether the stripes are vertical or horizontal. Recently not only have horizontal and vertical stripes been seen on celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Alexa Chung, but also more modern takes on a traditional pattern. Mary-Kate Olsen rocks a sweater dress with broken colorful lines and Katie Holmes and Jessica Alba zig-zag stripes. Whatever type of stripe you wear, you just need to know what looks most flattering on you. I mean, come on you know your body! I personally think that stripes are a lovely Spring pattern. But...what do you think? Are stripes for spring in or out?

In or Out: Nude Shoes

Celebrities in the nude...pair of shoes that is. It seems that everywhere you look this spring there are nude pumps! Of course, they are practical and help elongate the legs in a dress. I personally love the platform neutral heel, because of the way it looks with jeans and dresses. It can be paired with the wide leg jeans and a more fitted top to adhere to the trends of spring 2011, Kristen Cavallari plays up the 70's inspired looks very well with her feather vest and skinny jeans.  The neutral tone of these pumps make it nearly impossible to not find a match when pairing nude heels with a dress. The streets of Chicago undoubtedly tear up the caps on any heels, I have found it is a necessity to know a good shoe repair shop! One thing I do know is that I love this trend. What do you think? Are nude pumps in or out?

In or Out: Rain Boots?

The rainy, sleety weather of April has been hard to handle, especially in a practical fashionable way. Rain boots have had a strong prevalence on the streets, and for good reasons. I do have to say though that I am sick of rain boots being worn for a mere fashion statement. Wellies have been around for years, even royalty such as the late Princess Diana wore them when romping around the country side with Prince Charles. In past seasons we have seen celebrities such as Kate Moss and Rachel Bilson rock a pair of multi-colored tall Hunter boots with shorts and leggings. Even Jimmy Choo came out with a line of crocodile textured wellies. This season, although practical, I would like to see some different styles of rain boots. Tory Burch and Gucci have designed pairs of sleeker, less clunky wellies that resemble classic riding boots, and I prefer these much more over the played-out Hunter boots. What do you think of rain boots for fashion sake? Are they In or Out?

In or Out: Trench Coats

Kate Middleton.jpg

April showers bring May flowers? This season it seems the showers are bringing trench styles out in full bloom. Kate Middleton, the princess-soon-to-be, is known for always looking timelessly elegant and her trench coat is no different. Of course Burberry is famous for its trench coats complete with plaid-burberry-lining. This season Burberry re-vamped its classic trench and added gold studs to be a little more punk rock. Chicagoans seem to be loving this practical piece. Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent went a step further with trenches and made it into a dress for spring! I love the elegance of a nicely fitted trench coat and of course it helps on those wet, rainy Chicago spring days. What do you think about the trench styles for spring? Colors, Patterns or Style Favorites?

In or Out: Comfortable Chic

Zoe.jpg

Whoever said "beauty is pain" didn't foresee this season's trends. Not only has spring fashion this year become comfortable, but also easy and breezy. Long gone are the micro-mini's and hard-to-wear crop tops. RIght now celebrities are being seen in long flowing maxi dresses and comfortable wedges. It seems that this season is all about comfortable chic. Michael Kors in his 2011 Spring line was going for bright, structured comfort. The shoes shown were even easy-to-wear platform flats. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe has long been a fan of the loose fitting fashion of this season. I personally think that if worn with the right accessories and pieces it can look put together. Of course, you have to beware of the fine line between comfort and sloppy. I like to pair a flowy top with skinny jeans or a tight dress with a loose jacket, like Nicole Richie often does. But what do you think, is comfortable chic in or out? How do you like to wear it?

In or Out: Punk

GwenStefaniL.A.M.B.jpg

Spring means florals, colors and a metal-studded leather jacket? According to Balenciaga, Balmain and Burberry Porsum, that is exactly what spring fashion this season means and celebrities are taking notes. Most A-Listers are choosing to pick a small part of their wardrobe to be focus on punk-rock, whether it be the hair like Rihanna or the shoes like Rachel Bilson. Lindsay Lohan took the look right off the runway, no she didn't steal something else, but used inspiration from the Burberry Porsum line to wear an all black ensemble complete with a studded leather jacket. Avril Lavigne always looks punk-rock, but I am not sure that was the kind of punk Balenciaga was going for this spring.

I personally think that this look is great when worn the right way. I like to pair feminine pieces with more masculine punk rock pieces. For example a pair of worn down, black, skinny jeans with a flouncy floral top and heels, this way you get the best of both worlds! What do you think, is fashion is for spring? If so, how do you like to wear it?

In or Out: Jewel Tones for Spring

Patridge, fox, crawford, beyonce, gomez.jpg

Meryl Streep said it best in The Devil Wears Prada "Florals? For spring? Ground breaking." She of course was acting as a sarcastic editor-in-chief of a high end fashion magazine, and she was right. This spring season designers are shaking things up with lots of bold jewel-toned colors. Gucci's whole spring 2011 line was deep golds with magentas, emeralds and ceruleans. I love the rich bold colors of the spring lines, they are extremely different then the pale pastels usually seen for spring in the past.  Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox and Beyonce are taking note on the red carpet and flaunting the deep flattering tones. What do you think, are bold bright colors for spring in or out?

In or Out: Hoodies for Fall

enhanced-buzz-30481-1274548075-71.jpg

With the emergence of the Bieber Fever, comes all the good and bad trends of the teen pop sensation. Even top fashion designers are taking note. The hoodie was seen all over the fall 2011 runway this year. Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg were just a few of the designers who partook in the trend. Marc Jacobs designed one in midnight metallic blue and DVF had a sleeveless one.Dolce and Gabbana did a neon colored Coca-Cola sweatshirt in their collection as well.  This trend has been seen in both pop and hip hop cultures and even on models off duty. The laid-back style can be both dressed up or down. While I personally am undecided how I feel about "Luxe" sweatshirts, I do enjoy Justin Bieber's music. It's just so catchy! What do you think, are hoodies in or out for fall?

In or Out: Colored Nail Polish

opi-a-grape-fit[1].jpg

Long past are the days of french-tipped acrylic nails. Natural has obviously been adopted as the new way to wear your nails and the length is still clean and short. The only debate is over what to put on the nail. Lately, in preperation for spring, there has been a jump towards bright colored nail polish. OPI released their burlesque line a few months ago with colors made out of glitter, which I loved. The dark colors still are seen on the red carpet, but now there are just as many light colors seen on celbrities. Mint green, violet, and yellow are just a few of the hues seen splashed across A-listers nails, but what do you think? What are the hot new nail polish colors for spring?

In or Out: Bare-Headed Celebrities

We have all seen the terrible Trump comb over and the of course there is the Bieber bang swoop, but what about bold and bald? Male celebrities are moving towards baldness and hair loss with no fear, well some of them. There are still the celebrities that insist on wearing hair pieces and having surgeries for hair loss. Jon Gosselin, Jeremy Piven and Judd Law to name just a few. John Travolta has started sporting a no-hair look, which actually suits him well. I personally think that men should not be afraid to be bald, on some men it actually looks distinguished. Of course, on some others (Britney Spears) it can look frightening. What do you think, are bald headed celebs an In or and Out?

Fashion Week and Clutches: Smaller Bags are Back

BCBG. New York Fashion Week handbag trends from the runway for fall 2011Credit: Getty Images

If you're wiped out from carrying around heavy over-sized handbags the past few seasons, we've got some good news! This Fashion Week in New York, designers sent a surplus of Clutches down the runway.  So, if you're in the market for a new bag, consider lightening the load and go for a stylish clutch bag instead.

There's still a way to carry all your favorite personal items and fit them in a clutch - not all clutches are miniature! Although  Kim Kardashian usually sports over-the-top handbags, she's been seen with a cute Balenciaga Giant Clutch. The "Oversized Clutch" is a fantastic way to compromise style without losing the storage for your everyday essentials.

Check out the Book of the Month & Daily News Clutches from Kate Spade.  These clutches are designed to look like books of Classic Literature right off the shelves.  Just because your bag is smaller, it doesn't mean your style has to be!   Natalie Portman carried the "Lolita" clutch at the premier of Black Swan last Fall.

In or Out: 70's Glam

sonia-rykiel.jpg

Boogie Night's doesn't hold a light to these 70's inspired looks. Peace, love and 70's glam have been flooding the runways recently. From bell-bottoms to haute-couture, it seems like it is everywhere. I personally love the rompers, wedges and wide-leg pants. The clothing from that era is extremely flattering, if worn right. When wearing wide leg jeans and wedges you have to remember to keep it skinny on top, otherwise you wind up looking like a bag. Celebrities are flaunting the trend on the street and on the red carpet. Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and Leighton Meester all wore gowns inspired by the 70's to the Golden Globes this year. Sonia Rykiel's lines are always inspired from the era. She uses block and floral patterns paired with updated silhouettes to keep the look fresh. Marc Jacobs does the same thing with more of an authentic 1970's silhouette. This trend is spreading quickly, just in time for spring! What do you think about the fashions from the era?

SpiritHoods: Animal Hats

AnimalHats.jpg

Living in Chicago, I know how cold the weather can get. Everyone who is smart, will leave their house with a hat on. However, instead of the usual trapper hats, I've been seeing a lot of people wearing animal hats. Mostly hats with cat ears. The more popular ones are called SpiritHoods. They seem to be a new trend amoung celebrities as well as people living downtown. Khloe Kardashian, Pink, and Vanessa Hudgens have all been seen wearing SpiritHoods. These furry animal hats come with paws (hand warmers) that extend from the hat. SpiritHoods rage from $139-$119. What do you think? Will you be seen sporting an animal inspired hat, or are you more traditional?

See SpiritHoods.com if you're interested in purchasing one of these fuzzy hats.

In or Out: Sunglasses Shapes

SunglassesMain.jpg

As the winter weather prolongs itself with nasty, harsh snowstorms the only thing on my mind is a nice warm vacation. Sun, beaches and of course sunglasses! I cannot wait to go shopping for a new pair. Oversized sunglasses are being seen on all types of celebrities, but I am sick of the rectangular shaped ones that Lauren Conrad is sporting. Nicole Ricci and Ashley Olsen are wearing the oversized round lenses that I prefer. Another trend that has been around for ages is the wayfarer look, similar to the Blues Brothers. Ray Ban has always been an iconic brand of the wayfarers, even celebs as hot as Natalie Portman wear them. But what do you think? Are oversized and wayfarer sunglasses still in or have they been outworn?

Barrettes and Bobby Pins : Hair Styles

imagesCANVYWF4.jpg
Barrettes and bobby pins were once considered the accessory of little old ladies and little kids. However, they are now seen on teens, celebrities and the spring fashion runways! Everyone is showing up in either barrettes or bobby pins and looking very chic. According to the Wall Street Jounal article, "Barrettes: Dowdy No More," Spring 2011 trends include:

  • Hand crafted bobby pins or barrettes
  • Barrettes that pin back loose wind-swept side parts
  • Crystallized/artistic looking barrettes at the base of a pony tail

People can look innocent, sophisticated, and artistic while still being chic at the same time. Rihanna likes to wear very big, crystallized barrettes on the side of her hair. Are barrettes too innocent looking for you, or are you willing to try to bling up your hair?

I personally love them and will not go outside without mine. Wheather it's faux fur or real fur, everyone claims this accessory keeps them very warm and cozy in our near freezing temperatures. Celebrities as well as people around school and downtown Chicago have been spotted wearing them. Everyone loves them! So what do you think? I am so tired of women torturing themselves for hours at salons to have their hair bleached, straightened then teased and curled. Stars these days are even using fake hair to enhance their already beautiful manes. What happened to au natural? It was so refreshing to see some of the celebs at the Golden Globe Awards with simple elegant hair, such as Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway. Everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Rihanna have rocked leg warmers at least once. They can be worn a lone with heels, leggings, or under boots and over tights. The versatile appeal is drawn originally from Jane Fonda back in the 80's with her infamous workout videos, but does the trend still continue today? I personally love the look of leg warmers over tights and peeping out of the top of a high boot. For people who are always cold, such as myself, it helps keep the blustery winter winds off my legs when wearing skirts. What do you think about leg warmers? In or out?

Spring Collections : Alexander McQueen's Legacy Lives On!

00160m.jpg

The once talented, innovative, strange, intriguing man that's Lady Gaga's favorite designer is...

 ALEXANDER MCQUEEN!

Alexander McQueen was known for his outrageous fashion shows and constant unique fashion sense. With his armadillo shoes and crazy cut out outfits that Lady Gaga is known for wearing, his fashion label is an inspiration and attracts the eyes of many men and women all over the world. For Spring 2011 RTW, McQueen's legacy lives on in the name of Sarah Burton, the new creative director for Alexander McQueen. In the collection, the fashion pieces revolve all around our Earth. Through notes, it was written that "McQueen explained that he had been pondering Charles Darwin, the survival of the fittest, and the deleterious results of industrialization on the natural world."

imagesCAB3ODQY.jpg

Burton stayed with McQueen's signature frock coats, skinny-leg pants, and hourglass silhouettes, but the wood-print tailoring was much more fluid. She is the perfect person to grab hold of McQueen's legacy and make it prosper and survive for years to come. Bright, multicolored allover prints, leggings, and cocoon dresses were a big hit--a general trend emerging from London's young designers. Sarah Burton's goal is to satisfy consumers and to potentially sell this Spring. This collection, with its color, attention to detail, prints, leggings, cocoon dresses, ankle-wrapped shoes, and eased-up tailoring, looks like it'll be one of the best selling collections yet. More to get excited about for spring! We'll see if these new creative designs last in the eyes of the consumers...

Celebrity Body Types : In or Out?

nike-butt1.jpg

Skinny, curvy, shapely, or athletic? Each individual body type brings something intriguing to the naked eye. Over time, we've seen celebs go from stick thin to more and more healthy and curvy shaped. In 2010 and 2011, the trend will stay in the health zone... accepting all body types and seeing more and more striking figures. From Gwyneth Paltrow to Kim Kardashian, celebrities have a variety of different body types.

The trend is toward curvier, vuluptious bodies, but health is still the most important thing. Whether they are skinny or curvy, celebrities make their bodies work for them and they all look beautiful. Even T.V. shows like Mad Men emphasized beauty in different ways, showcasing Christina Hendricks (Joan), with an extremely vuluptuous body, making girls and women all over the world look at Joan and other curvy women with a healthy body image in mind, instead of aspiring to be stick thin.

Nike did an ad for women, bringing awareness to the female body, emphasizing everything beautiful about it, especially butts. Nike is praising curves and telling women that if someone has a problem with your shape they can, well, kiss your ass. Big butts are in, and will stay in for awhile. So, what do YOU think?

TV stars and Rock bands used to be the only one's wearing ripped up, torn, and destroyed jeans, now everyone from the girl next door to high fashion models are "rocking" ripped jeans.  Wildfox Couture makes some fantastic destroyed skinny jeans, seen on every celeb in LA.  What do you think should ripped jeans be thrown out or are they here to stay?

Knee High Sock : "IN or OUT?"

tieupsocks.jpg

Knee high socks used to be associated with sports teams, uniforms, and formal dress, but today knee socks are being worn in totally different ways.  Alexander Wang, Miu Miu and many more designers have knee high socks in their Fall 2010 runway shows.  The new twist on the traditional knee high has produced some interesting designs, take a look and tell us if you think knee high socks are a rising trend or if they just fall short.

Big Bold Necklaces : "IN or OUT"?

jewelry-2-de-17538559.jpg

Chunky necklaces have been all the rage for quite a while now.  Layering chains, and bib necklaces are seen all over the runways.  Recently Harper's Bazaar mentioned that minimal necklaces would be back for Fall 2010.  Smaller minimal necklaces would be a nice change and could help get that extra "weight" of the chunky necklaces off our shoulders.  But, as much as I like change I'm not sure if I can see the chunky necklaces ever going out of style.  What do you think is minimal coming back?

Exposed Stomach, Crop Tops : "IN or OUT"

crop-top-2-layering-fall-2010-trends[1].jpg

Crop tops also known as belly shirts became popular in the 1980's and seem to be coming back once again!  Designers like Rag & Bone, Diesel Black and Gold, Timo Weiland, and Proenza Schouler are all putting crop tops back in the mix for Fall 2010.  We see them layerd with tanks and sweaters and worn with tihts and skinny jeans.  What do you think are crops tops really back in?

Hot Summer Scarves: "IN or OUT"?

BDG-Plaid-Square-Scarf.png

The Chicago weather has been very good to us lately, despite the 80 to 90 degree heat I still seem to be seeing summer scarves everywhere!  From the runways of Cynthia Rowley, Thakoon and Burberry to the necks of the Chicago pedestrians it seems like everyone is "wrapped" up in the trend.  What do you think, is it a trend better left out in the cold, or can it heat up the perfect summer outfit?

Mary Janes : "IN or OUT"?

ivi91c.jpg

When you think of mary janes what are the first things that come to your mind?  Old, out-dated, something only your grandma would wear?  Until recently I didn't think it would be possible to make mary janes sexy, but Miu Miu did it with sky-high platforms creating a long lean sexy leg.  Their modern take on the boring classic is anything but.  What do you think is this a trend better left up to Buster Brown, or has it busted out of the old cliche?

Sex in the City Aviators: "In or Out"

62.jpg

MYKITA Ad

Sex in the City is always known to start fashion trends, whether it is a new trend or reviving an old one.  The first movie reinvented the past season Manolo Blahnik's causing all the female fans running to Barney's to get their hands on the re-released pump.  In the second movie the focus seems to be on the MYKITA mirrored aviators Carrie wore throughout the movie.  They are selling at Nieman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and at the SITC stylist's own website patriciafield.com.  Aviators have been a trend for decades, but these aviators are bold and GOLD!  What do you think, is this aviator trend going to live forever, or is it already dead?

Sexy Long dresses : "In or Out"?

1016.jpg

The Maxi Dress

Some of us remember a time when the choice of hemline length was what set you apart from other classes, or groups of people.  Fashion history buffs, as well as most of the public are familiar with the term maxi along with mini when referring to both extremes for dress lengths.  Today women can choose whatever suits their mood and lifestyle.  It's fun to look around and see women of all sizes and heights embracing the mini and maxi looks. Recently when I interviewed Nicole Richie a reporter wanted to know how she was able to wear some of the maxi dresses from her own line, she answered that she wears maxi's with flats or heels depending on her mood. Her being a mere five feet tall has nothing to do with her choices.  Whatever choice you make, do it in style!

Exposed Bra: "In or Out"?

bralet_01.jpg

The weather is heating up and everyone is starting to bring out their Spring and Summer wardrobes.  It seems with every slinky top there is an exposed bra to match.  I remember when it was a task to find a bra that couldn't be seen under your favorite barely there lace or silk top; now people are just "embracing" the bra.  Exposed bras are all over the runway and the streets of Chicago.  Prada, Marc Jacobs, and Givenchy all have models strutting down the wearing garments that do just that, expose the bra.  So, do we think it's sexy to see a woman with exposed undergarments, or is it just bad taste?

Khaki Shirts: "In or Out"?

gisele-bundchen-vogue-korea-mayo-2010-nino-munoz.jpg

When you think of Khaki what comes to mind?  I think of old Dockers and Army uniforms, but I have been seeing the new military theme everywhere lately!  Women and Men in khaki shirts with army green accents.  Designers like Alexander Wang, Charlotte Ronson, Chole, and even Burberry Prorsum have jumped on the military inspired bandwagon for Spring 2010.  What do you think is the khaki shirt overrated or does it really stand up to marching orders?

Bright Tights : "IN or OUT"?

23m.jpg

Leggings and tights have become a way of life for most of us in the recent years, a staple in almost every woman's wardrobe,  but unless you are ready to let your legs go naked, brightly colored tights are definitely out!  One exception would be Halloween, but they are just too gaudy for everyday wear. Sheer, sheer printed, and fishnets are totally acceptable for the coming months.  They were seen all over Lanvin's fall RTW runway.

The Boyfriend Sweater: "IN or OUT"?

MESH-SHOULDER-SWEATER.jpg

Who ever said your boyfriend wasn't good for anything, without him we would have never worn the over-sized sweater, often refereed to as the "boyfriend sweater".  Pioneered by Mary Kate Olsen, this look is effortlessly chic.  It seems to be just thrown together, but still manages to look fashionable.  The boyfriend sweater is pretty versatile as well, worn with skinny's on a chilly day, and with bare legs in the spring and summer.  Is the boyfriend sweater chic, or just plain sloppy?

Wide Leg Pants : "IN or OUT"?

Thumbnail image for chloe.jpg

Some of you remember back in the 70's when HUGE flare pants were in style.  Or for the younger generation, Rachel Zoe is wearing them all the time. It seems like the trend is returning once again, wide leg pants are back!  They are all over the Chloe, Behnaz Sarafpor, and Araks Fall 2010 runways.  With some heels and a fitted shirt wide leg pants can elongate the legs, but other times they can make you look just a tad overweight.  What do you think are wide leg pants "In or Out"?

Jumpsuits: "In or Out"?

ella-moss-knit-jumpsuit.jpg

Soon this warm Chicago weather will stick around and all the big puffy coats will be gone; but what is going to be unveiled when those coats are peeled off and thrown to the side?  I've been seeing a lot of jumpsuits, the connected tops and bottoms, lately in all colors and prints.  Lanvin, and Ella Moss have some great jumpsuits in their Spring ready to wear lines, but if the designer jumpsuits are a little too pricey H&M also has some unique pieces.  Are the one-piece jumpsuits a good blast from the past, or should they stay in the 80's?

Shaved Head : "In or Out?"

Celebs+Pose+New+MANGO+Autumn+Winter+2009+Collection+QMV31CZrfncl.jpg

Something I've been noticing around the streets of Chicago, and recently LA, are partially shaved heads. Even one of my interns is a follower of this trend, and she looks amazing.  I know it sounds crazy, but the first person I actually saw with this hairdo was Alice Dellal, a model, socialite, and daughter of a British millionaire.  The trend seems to be catching on.  Mel B (scary spice) and her daughter are both sporting the shaved look.  Do you think is it "In" or just terribly "Out"?

Rubber Boots: "In or Out"?

Rubber boots seem to be all the rage lately.  We see them every day on the streets of Chicago in rain or shine.  When I was a kid I loved to splash around in the puddles in my rain boots; but now designers like Burberry, Jimmy Choo , and Hunter are coming up with some pretty trendy rain boots to try and keep you dry while still looking fashionable.  One of the fashionistas told me her rain boots were under $10 bucks!  What do you all think, are rubber boots "In or Out"?

Kate Spade Handbags: "In or Out"?

kate Spade+me.jpg

As we all know Kate Spade is a very talented designer who makes beautiful handbags, but where have they been lately?  Kate's bags were very popular about five years ago but recently I haven't noticed many on women's arms.  You've heard it before but I will say it again, the economy is causing all of us to shop with a little more caution, but it still seems like women are splurging when they fall in love with that fantastic designer bag. I myself have a weakness for French and some Italian handbags, the more beat up my Hermes is, the more I adore it.  A designer bag is an investment that should last for at least 20 years.

I personally still love some of Kate Spade's small clutches, but the Kate that is catching my eye now is Kate Moss.  I particularly love the new envelope clutch for Longchmap.  Let us know are Kate Spade bags "In or Out"?

"In" or "Out": Ponytail Do's

ciara-l-1.jpg

While women everywhere from fashion runways to shopping or in the gym, love to embrace wearing the ponytail hairdo. Isn't it time we look for some alternatives for a hair change? Do we really want to continue to wear a look we adorned in high school? Celebs are looking to up do's like the classic French Twist or dangling loose with waves, braids, and curls like Blake Lively at the Emmy's last year. And, you can look so pretty for Valentine's Day with a new look like the celebs. Sometimes I just love letting my hair dry naturally with lots of waves for a sexy look like the beautiful model Gisele Bundchen. Yes, the ponytail is easy and quick but isn't it time that we made it a priority to add some glamour to a favorite up do or just let those beautiful locks come tumbling down.

Big Bags: IN or OUT?

rihanna-snakeskin-bag-close-up.jpg

Show me a woman who is happy carrying a mini bag, and I'll show you a woman who has no life! I don't think women are going to give up schlepping around handbags that look large enough to carry their winter wardrobe, plus their makeup, cell phones, books, and all sorts of other trinkets, for some small clutch bag. We live in a day and age where bigger is better. Check out Rihanna above toting the very sexy Devi Kroell Large Roman bag in Python. Why not apply this concept to our purses? What do you guys think? Is bigger better?

Ed Hardy: IN or OUT?

edhardy.jpg

Walking through the flea markets in Palm Springs last week I was shocked to see the number of Ed Hardy inspired t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans. Sorry to tell you, but when these trends start popping up in these places, I know it is time to move on to another trend.  Ed Hardy, for those that may be living under a rock, are those shirts that were launched by Christian Audigier with lots of hearts, skulls and plenty of glitz to reflect a biker/rocker look. Many of the celebs embraced this look like Paris Hilton and Brett Michaels to create the buzz. Keep in mind that one of the looks for spring is Military inspired with safari jackets. Fashion moves quickly. Just blink and something new will be the 'In" look for the next moment. What do you think?....

Seven For All Mankind: IN or OUT?

adwatch270003.0.0.0x0.366x500.jpeg

Is there anyone who hasn't owned or wanted a pair of Seven jeans? These amazing jeans, that were launched in 2000, helped revitalize the designer jean market. I first saw them at Barneys around 2001. Even celebrities were wearing them. But in 2007 VF Corp acquired the brand, and let me tell you, things changed. I started to see the jeans everywhere and they were no longer exclusive, or the hot new style. Yes, of course, fit is important, but I can buy a pair of jeans from the Gap or Target, way cheaper, if I was just looking for fit. I don't want to wear the same jeans as someone's grandmother! Call me a snood, if you must. The designer jean with one of the best fits today is Siwy for a skinny look. Some other great brands I found at DNA 2050 are Rockstar and Jet. I personally think J Brand is the new Seven of today with celebrities like Blake Lively, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan embracing them. What do you think?

Real Fur: IN or OUT?

2008-03-02-MilanFashion.jpg

For many seasons (beginning in the 80's) it was politically incorrect to walk around flaunting furs on your body. In many instances, protesters threw blood on the furs of those that opposed the trend walking the streets. There were ads with well-known models photographed nude saying, "I rather wear nothing than wear fur." Well, that idea disappeared when the Queen of Fashion, Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, declared that in May, 2009..."Vogue is here to report on the fashion industry.  Fur is part of the fashion and we will continue to report on it...." And of course, Ms. Wintour wore fur embellishments for many years, as often as possible, to punctuate the point that fur is back. Many of my readers are looking or opting for faux furs, but others prefer to have to wear real fur such as fashionable vintage coats and shrugs. What do you think?

Winter Shorts: IN or OUT?

Who Wears Short Shorts?
short shorts 2(10).jpg

Of course shorts look amazing on sun-tanned legs in the summer but does this trend work for winter?  Many Chicago women have decided to charge forward and wear leggings under shorts or tights with the addition of boots to create a winter look that is a show stopper--OR--is it just absurd?  I prefer wearing my boot length jeans over my Hanro underwear to keep me warm when I walk my dog Gage in the frigid temperatures.  What do you think?

Wide Leg Jeans: IN or OUT?

theory Max C pants $253.jpg

Blame it on the revival of the 80's trends with biker chic, sequins and glitz--but are we buying into the bell bottoms or wide leg jeans that stores are trying to push? Maybe it worked for Sonny and Cher but most Chicago women are sticking with their skinny jeans. Even Alessandra Ambrosio (Victoria's Secret Model) wore skinny jeans when I interviewed her recently on my blog.  I did meet several women that admitted they did own the boot cut but nixed it in favor of their skinny jeans (which fit into their over-the-knee boots to keep them warm this winter.) While Seven jeans are still popular some of the newer names in the designer world are James Jeans and J Brand with their very slim leg also known as "denim leggings." Of course what is most important at any price range is the fit!
