It is indeed rare that I have ever been to an event where the press is delegated to a dark corner away from the runway. It seems the front seats were reserved mostly for men who have been major donors to the event. And it was another exciting student fashion runway event, choreographed by my talented friend, Tracey Tarrantino of Zzazz Productions, and presented by the charming Linda Yu, ABC7. It was a celebration of the 10th yr anniversary for the best of the students in fashion from 5 schools, with proceeds from the evening going to Chicago Fashion Incubator and other charities. The 2011 student winner went to Que Shebley. Congrats!!

While
I did love the idea of bumping into celebs in Palm Springs at gallery
openings, Chicago does provide plenty of glitz and fun also. Recently I went to the Hollis Sigler opening (Jan 23- March 28)
at the Chicago Cultural Center. It was packed with artists, students,
art lovers, and people who enjoy free wine along with free admission.
Having purchased a Hollis Sigler for my home early on in her career, it
was so rewarding to see the attention she continues to garner even
after her death with her beautiful images.
Puerto RIcan born Angel Otero, a recent MFA grad of the Art
Institute is one of the hot new darlings and rising star that everyone
is buzzing about in the Chicago art world and whose work was on display
(Jan 23-March 28) on the 4th floor gallery. It will be fun to watch his
progress!
**Check out the gallery for some of the individuals at the Cultural Center. Such a great opening! Have a look for yourself... p.s. Did you see the IN or OUT? yesterday?! What do YOU think? Stay tuned tomorrow for the announcement of my NEXT GIVEAWAY! (Did someone say Giveaway?!)**
Two hundred years ago, if you were to mention the word "pants" to someone, they would think you were crazy (and ask what you were talking about.) Most societies wore skirted garments (yes, even men!) until these skirts were "split" to make riding horses a bit easier. The political working class of the 1800's transformed the workman's garments into a symbol of power, and it stayed that way. Fast-forward a few years to 2010 and the thought of a man in a skirt may inspire laughter--though it may not be as crazy as you think! I have spotted men in skirts and kilts on the streets lately and I also know that the handsome Marc Jacobs is a lover of the look. This trend really exploded on the scene in Fall 2009, but has not gained mass popularity in America (though Europeans have begun to wear them.) Maybe in 5 or 10 years men NOT wearing skirts will be a silly thought! Personally, I believe you should wear what makes you feel good, but I must ask you men out there: Would you wear a skirt or a kilt? Do you think this trend will catch on in America?
Leave your thoughts in a comment and let me know what you think (ladies too!)
-Barbara
p.s. Check back here tomorrow (Tuesday) for a post from our newest Guest Blogger!
**Have a look at the gallery and see for yourself how men are wearing skirts. I think some of the looks are very chic. See for yourself!**
