Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence

Linda Yu And myself.JPG

It is indeed rare that I have ever been to an event where the press is delegated to a dark corner away from the runway. It seems the front seats were reserved mostly for men who have been major donors to the event. And it was another exciting student fashion runway event, choreographed by my talented friend, Tracey Tarrantino of Zzazz Productions, and presented by the charming Linda Yu, ABC7.  It was a celebration of  the 10th yr anniversary for the best of the students in fashion from 5 schools, with proceeds from the evening going to Chicago Fashion Incubator and other charities. The 2011 student winner went to Que Shebley. Congrats!!

Bill Cunningham New York: Movie Premiere in Chicago

I know all you fashionistas are aware of the work of Bill Cunningham in Sunday's Style Section, "On The Street" and "Evening Hours" in the New York Times. It was indeed exciting to get a behind-the-scenes look at his amazing work at the preview party thrown at the W Hotel.  Of course I cover the Chicago Streets on my blog, but he did it first- before the others also like Tommy Ton and the Sartorialist.  He does it daily (rain or snow) on his bike, which he mentions has been stolen 29 times, and he's over 80 years old! Don't you just love it?!

I got a chance to talk to film makers Richard Press, Director & Cinematographer, and Phillip Gefter, Producer. When asked what was the most difficult part of making the documentary, they said "convincing Bill to agree to do it."  It took 8 years of convincing and 2 years to do the movie.  He is an original.  He see's fashion as the armor to survive, and the armor of everyday life.  He says it (fashion) educates the eye.

Don't miss the movie which is playing for only one week at the Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave). I loved it!!

Fashion: Missoni teams up with Target

We can all get excited, the wait is over.  Missoni has now teamed up with Target to mass produce its collection.  The Italian designers are well known for their brilliance in both knits and prints, as we know are both big this season.  It has been reported that the release date will conveniently be on this upcoming September 13.
The release of the collection is expected to occur nation wide, with at least 400 products.  If you have not already, this is a great time to become more familiar with Missoni products as we can expect to see everything from apparel to home decorative options.  I am even more excited to know that by being collaborative with Target we can expect to see affordable prices, with supplies for the entire family to enjoy.

The British Are Coming: All Saints

The British have certainly been the topic of conversation lately with the recent Royal Wedding.  Now we are being invaded on Michigan Avenue by a British retailer called All Saints. Established in 1994, the retailer is known for fusing music, fashion and culture.  With several dozen stores already in the UK, All Saints is marking it's territory by adding its 11th US store in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. Pushing individuality and attitude, the grunge inspired retailer will be sure to catch the attention of passersby. Can't wait for the grand opening, which is scheduled for Mid May."

Karl Lagerfeld Designs: Spring 2011 AND Diet Coke

Several years ago when King Karl, yes Karl Lagerfeld was in Chicago, I inteviewed him on NBC5 & we had dinner together at Blackbird. He was indeed charming and on his way to his slim, fabulous, stylish self as he is today. To pass on the message of staying healthy & slim, he is now designing bottles for Diet Coke. No, you can't wear these designs but they will definitely look fab on my book shelves! Along with his new designs for Coke, Karl Lagerfeld also has an amazing Spring 2011 eyewear collection with many options designed to showcase Lagerfeld's logo using vintage shapes wrapped with lush textures and vibrant colors. Check out the video of Lagerfeld's latest Diet Coke collection. Do we love Lagerfeld's designs for eyewear as well as his designs for diet coke?

The phenomenal show "Project Runway" hosted by Heidi Klum, with team members like Michael Kors and Tim Gunn are bringing their casting to the windy city for the upcoming season 9.  We are expected to have great talent from Chicago, with well trained designers from leading fashion schools like Columbia college or the Art Institute we are bound to hit the runway.  However, this will not be the first time the windy city has made its mark on Project Runway as Cynthia Rowley brought us amazing designs and Bobbi Brown proved herself as a remarkable make-up artist on the show.  I will be interviewing the winner of season 4 Christian Siriano at Columbia college on April 26, look out for the post that week so you do not miss out.

Jennifer Hudson: New Body & A New Boyfriend

One of our favorite singers, Jennifer Hudson, has never looked better. Besides her amazing weight loss, thanks to Weight Watchers, Jennifer Hudson also has a happy glow due to her new fiance, David Otunga. David, a Chicago native, is a professional wrestler and a Harvard graduate who popped the question to Hudson with a Neil Lane diamond ring on her 27th birthday. Both Hudson and Otunga hail from Chicago, making them even more lovable for us Chicagoans. We love Jennifer Hudson and can't wait to hear and see more from her. Like her ad for Weight Watchers states(seen below), "It's a new dawn, a new day, a new life.. and I'm feeling good." And she looks good too!

Celebrity Fashion Styles: The Chunky Necklace

A chunky necklace is a standout accessory every woman needs to have in their wardrobe. Jessica Alba, Leighton Meester, and Oliva Palermo are just a few celebrities spotted with great statement necklaces this year. They add pizazz, style, and intrigue to any outfit. Even during the summer, when it's hot and sunny, it's always nice to dress up a light summer dress or casual outfit with an eye-popping necklace. Will you be wearing your statement jewelry this spring/summer?

Kate Middleton: Franklin Mint Doll and Burberry Coat

Everyone cannot get enough of Kate Middleton and the royal wedding. We personally love Kate and everything that she does and wears. She has become increasingly more popular as the countdown to the wedding draws closer and closer. Pictures have started popping up of her in bikinis and many designers are taking full advantage of her beautiful looks and graceful manner. Kate modeled a sheer see-though dress in college which was very revealing, the one where the Prince certainly began to look at her in a different light. Well now, the dress is being auctioned off by the college designer with all of the proceeds going to charity. Franklin Mint, the leader in the portrait doll world, is also using Kate to make a doll out of in the very blue dress she wore when her and the Prince announced their engagement. The Kate dolls cost $195. It seems that everything with Kate's picture on it gets sold immediately whether it's a stamp or the Burberry raincoat that she wore to a christening on a boat which sold out immediately. So are you in love with Kate just as much as we are or are you ready for the royal wedding to be over already?

With every wedding, there comes a bachelorette party. With Kate Middleton's wedding just around the corner, it's only right for this soon to be princess, to have the right send off into marriage. Kate's sister and maid of honor, Pippa Middleton, is throwing her the best bachelorette party she can ever imagine. There are actually going to be two celebrations. One in London and one at the Middleton's family house in Buckleton, Berkshire. No one knows what Pippa is planning on doing for Kate's bachelorette party. Not only is Pippa keeping Kate guessing, she's also keeping the world guessing on what's going to happen. We are all very excited and can't wait to hear about Kate's bachelorette party before she is crowned as a princess.

Hermes Chicago: Chicago's Elite

Thumbnail image for Tracye Tackbary, Managing Dir., Robert Chavez, Pres_CEO + me JPG.JPG

It was a sea of Birkin bags and Hermes scarves on women everywhere when I arrived at the beautiful Hermes store event called, "The Festival of Crafts." I felt like I was back in Paris with the 9 craftsmen that are here from Paris through Wednesday, March 16th to show their products are handcrafted. It was amazing to watch them at work. It certainly made me want to take up horseback riding again (yes, I did ride as a child) as the Hermes saddles were a work of art. Yes, of course everything was beautiful at Hermes including the clothes, jewelry, handbags, and home accessories.

Kate Middleton Hats: Philip Treacy Designer

Who says you can't look fab wearing a hat? Certainly Kate Middleton proves you can look classic, chic and modern in the right hat. We know some of those hats were designed by famous English Designer Philip Treacy, who has done amazing hats for Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker and the fantastic hats for Carmilla Parker Bowles at her wedding to Prince Charles. When Kate marries Prince William at the end of April, all eyes will be on her dress... and on her head. Kate always seems to be wearing stylish hats and everyone is excited to see what she might have on for her evening reception. Keep your eyes out for a beautiful Philip Treacy hat. What do you think? Kate Middleton Fashion Watch: Issa A Favorite Designer

Daniella Helayel is a name that most of you may not be familiar with. This great designer is celebrating her 10 year anniversary of her Issa line (her middle name) with a fantastic fall/winter 2011 collection at London Fashion Week. Issa is known for making beautiful jersey pieces while adding many colorful prints and is one of Kate Middletons favorite designers. Kate Middleton famously wore a perfect royal blue Issa dress to announce her engagement to Prince William, it soon sold out at Net-a-Porter, which brought tons of international recognition to the label.

This season, the designer is proud of her bohemian chic prints in stand out bold colors. The draped jersey dresses, deep-v neck lines, and silky full circle skirts paired with tights are some looks that can't go wrong. The collection is very intriguing, which is why Kate Middleton probably likes it due to her great, sophisticated, elegant but conservative taste. What do you think of Issa?

Spring 2011 Fashion: The Return of Bell Bottoms

It's back to the 1970's with statement pants. Say goodbye to skinny jeans and hello to bell bottoms! I know everybody loves to show off their body in tight skinny jeans but believe me, bell bottoms are just as fun. They seem to give everyone an elegant look while adding length to the body. Modernize the look with sky high platform heels and a loose fitting blouse. You can't go wrong this spring if you have a pair of great bell bottoms and some high wooden platform sandals. Even though you may be used to skinny jeans, be daring enough to embrace the 70's all over again to take part in an era that is full of interesting styles.

Spring Fashion: A Pop of Color

With a dose of warmer weather in Chicago, women are beginning to think spring by adding a sprinkle of color to their wardrobe. Whether it's a colorful bag, scarf, shoes, or even hair highlights, we've been seeing bursts of color popping up everywhere. Even Michelle Obama recently was seen on the Today Show wearing a black and white polka dotted dress with some yellow heels and a pink/orange belt, both excellent pops of color. SpiritHoods: Animal Hats

Living in Chicago, I know how cold the weather can get. Everyone who is smart, will leave their house with a hat on. However, instead of the usual trapper hats, I've been seeing a lot of people wearing animal hats. Mostly hats with cat ears. The more popular ones are called SpiritHoods. They seem to be a new trend amoung celebrities as well as people living downtown. Khloe Kardashian, Pink, and Vanessa Hudgens have all been seen wearing SpiritHoods. These furry animal hats come with paws (hand warmers) that extend from the hat. SpiritHoods rage from $139-$119. What do you think? Will you be seen sporting an animal inspired hat, or are you more traditional?

Barrettes and Bobby Pins : Hair Styles

Barrettes and bobby pins were once considered the accessory of little old ladies and little kids. However, they are now seen on teens, celebrities and the spring fashion runways! Everyone is showing up in either barrettes or bobby pins and looking very chic. According to the Wall Street Jounal article, "Barrettes: Dowdy No More," Spring 2011 trends include:
  • Hand crafted bobby pins or barrettes
  • Barrettes that pin back loose wind-swept side parts
  • Crystallized/artistic looking barrettes at the base of a pony tail

People can look innocent, sophisticated, and artistic while still being chic at the same time. Rihanna likes to wear very big, crystallized barrettes on the side of her hair. Are barrettes too innocent looking for you, or are you willing to try to bling up your hair?

Street Fashion : What are YOU wearing?

It's hard to dress well while keeping warm in this insane Chicago weather, but it seems to always get done. As I was walking around the streets of downtown Chicago, Wicker park, and my school (The Illinois Institute of Art), I realized that it's hard to find someone who doesn't have something trendy on. With stores like Forever 21 and H&M, we are in a world of fast fashion. It is easy for anyone to become trendy in an instant because the trends keep pouring in at cheap prices.

As I was people watching, I noticed the majority of Chicagoans had long black winter coats or leather jackets. Uggs, Hunter rain boots, or military styled shoes are by far the most popular shoes this winter as well as long, oversized scarves and interesting hats. Amoung all these trends, I did happen to find some unique pieces such as oversized hair bows and small scarves. A lot of people have style in Chicago, and a lot don't. After seeing so many oversized scarves, the little ones tied tightly around the neck seem the newest. As Barbara says, "it is a breath of fresh air to see something new after constantly seeing the same trends over and over again."

Even celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and the Olsen twins are sporting similar looks to people here in Chicago. It seems as though celebrities and consumers alike are all revolving around the same fashion trends. It's interesting that no matter what status you are, trends are trends and that's that. Are you out in the winter with your Uggs or Hunter boots?

The once talented, innovative, strange, intriguing man that's Lady Gaga's favorite designer is...

Alexander McQueen was known for his outrageous fashion shows and constant unique fashion sense. With his armadillo shoes and crazy cut out outfits that Lady Gaga is known for wearing, his fashion label is an inspiration and attracts the eyes of many men and women all over the world. For Spring 2011 RTW, McQueen's legacy lives on in the name of Sarah Burton, the new creative director for Alexander McQueen. In the collection, the fashion pieces revolve all around our Earth. Through notes, it was written that "McQueen explained that he had been pondering Charles Darwin, the survival of the fittest, and the deleterious results of industrialization on the natural world."

Giving Thanks to Our Courageous Firefighters

chicago firefighters.jpg
During this holiday season, I feel that it is only appropriate to give thanks to the men and women who serve and protect our communities.  This week 2 firefighters who responded to a call to a South Shore commercial building blaze, lost their lives when the roof caved in on them. At the time, they were checking for possible civilians in the building. They put themselves in harm's way by doing their job. 17 other firefighters were also injured. My sincere thoughts go out to their families..let's keep them in our thoughts as I wish all of you a safe and happy holiday.

Celebrity Body Types : In or Out?

Skinny, curvy, shapely, or athletic? Each individual body type brings something intriguing to the naked eye. Over time, we've seen celebs go from stick thin to more and more healthy and curvy shaped. In 2010 and 2011, the trend will stay in the health zone... accepting all body types and seeing more and more striking figures. From Gwyneth Paltrow to Kim Kardashian, celebrities have a variety of different body types.

The trend is toward curvier, vuluptious bodies, but health is still the most important thing. Whether they are skinny or curvy, celebrities make their bodies work for them and they all look beautiful. Even T.V. shows like Mad Men emphasized beauty in different ways, showcasing Christina Hendricks (Joan), with an extremely vuluptuous body, making girls and women all over the world look at Joan and other curvy women with a healthy body image in mind, instead of aspiring to be stick thin.

Nike did an ad for women, bringing awareness to the female body, emphasizing everything beautiful about it, especially butts. Nike is praising curves and telling women that if someone has a problem with your shape they can, well, kiss your ass. Big butts are in, and will stay in for awhile. So, what do YOU think?

Michelle Obama: Arts, Music... Fashion!

Photo: Harper's Bazaar

Check out our leading lady, Michelle, in the White House's Red Room with a snazzy young group of creative kids. And of course, do not fail to notice her fabulously form-fitting yet sophisticated L'Wren Scott dress and gorgeous blue kitten-hell pumps - talk about a daring woman who is not afraid to be bold with color. In a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar, Michelle talks about the prevalence of the arts in her upbringing and how this taught her the importance of such an outlet for today's youth - specifically, she was raised in a home pulsing with the beat of soulful jazz, the passion of her grandfather, and her own father was a sculptor and painter when not working to feed his family. With that history, it would be impossible to not share a love for such pursuits. Michelle herself can name her first album, Stevie Wonder's Talking Book, but, even more poignantly, she recalls performing in her school's production of Hansel & Gretel. The best thing about this piece of her past? She was drawn to the role of the fairy because of the tutu costume it allowed her wear!

Michelle happily supports fashion as a unique and inspirational art form, using her position to prove that style is personal and political. Check out some of her best looks and favorite designers below!

There, we mere mortals mingled with the Gods, also known as Supermodels, while dancing to the swift beats of Chicago's hottest DJ's. If you weren't in attendance, we surely are sorry! Maybe next time?! Check out the gallery below of all the best shots from Glamorama!

Macy Gray in Chicago for Macy's Glamorama

macy and me.JPG

Friday night was a night full of fashion, fun, music, and fantasy as Macy's Glamorama blew into the Windy City. The event that is in association with the Ronald McDonald House, brought out Grammy nominated heavy hitter, Macy Gray, and new comer, Eric Hutchinson. I had the pleasure of interviewing Macy earlier Friday evening, and the bashful songstress was very stunning and very tall!

BG:  Your new CD is about love and caring for each other and that is very fashionable. Tell me, your style is unique, tell me about it.

MG:  I kinda through this together cuz the other dress I had I haven't really taken pictures in. I love this shirt I'm wearing now, but I couldn't tell u where I got it, I just don't know!

BG:  Your hair is very unique, who inspired it?

MG:  My mom's was a working mom and didn't have time to do my hair in the morning so she would just grab it and lift it up like this.

BG:  You mention that your new film with Tyler Perry it is about women, but men are always in control, if you were in charge, how would things be different?

MG:  Oh, that's a long interview answer! That would take days! As much as we are told that we are secondary and that we are not as powerful, we are the beautifulest creatures on earth and I am proud to be a girl!

Check out more from Glamorama Tuesday with all the highlights from fashion to the after party held at the Macy's on State Street!

Chicago Bears Linebacker: Making a Fashion Statement

Think Puck from Glee circa season 1. Adam Levine, of Maroon 5 fame. No, I am not talking about their sultry singing voices, but their hair-do's. That is correct, the infamous "faux-hawk." Recently, Lance Briggs, linebacker for the Chicago Bears unveiled his barely there new do. Although he asserts, "the originator is Sean Merriman," from the San Diego Chargers, this is one look that may be taking Chicago by the scalp. Briggs, in his interview today, voiced his hopes for the whole city of Chicago to be sporting the hairstyle by the end of the Chicago Bears season. The "faux-hawk" has been around in sports for a few years now, previously not in American Football but Futbol nonetheless.  David Beckham rocked this look while playing for AC Milan. Manchester United hotshot Cristiano Ronaldo also loves the close-side-trimmed-spiky-top cut. The change may be because of the heat, team camaraderie or just plain fun, whatever the reason I hope the less hair on top means more points on the field for our Chicago Bears this season.

High Fashion Highlights: Vera Wang

In seeing Chelsea Clinton's choice to wear Vera Wang at her gorgeous wedding in rustic Rhinebeck, N.Y. just a few days ago, I of course thought both the gown and the designer were fabulous selections! Vera Wang's bridal collections are always renowned, and I can't help but look up into the window of her boutique whenever I'm on Oak Street to see what princess-like white confection might be on display!

But as much as Vera's signature is dressing brides for their big day, her Ready-to-Wear pieces are true genius as well. Her eye for feminine details like ruffles, ruching, and pleating, and her expertise with fabrics from tulle and silk to wool and fur amaze me each time she presents her pieces down the runway. This fall, her designs are flirty and fun mixed with elegant and refined, but black is the common thread that runs through the collection. There is something for every occasion - the office, the cocktail party, the work dinner, and a night out on the town! Check out some of her most recent styles below as well as celebrities donned in pieces by this beautiful and talented designer.

Best Kept Secrets: Dino-myte Style

Long before women were celebrated by some for being a size 0 and 00 on runways and the pages of fashion magazines, it much more in vogue to be as large as they come - maybe even up to 7 tons! In prehistoric times, Sue, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was the hot chick, ruling her world of scaly sisters. Be sure to experience the super-realistic robotic Sue while The Field Museum celebrates her 10th birthday!  And if the Ice Age is something you want to learn more about, check out Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age, happening now through Sept. 6. See Lyuba, the best-preserved Mammoth ever found!

And if you're into vintage, fashion doesn't get older than this! Check out some Sue accessories at the Field Museum Store and other
fun, dinosaur-inspired looks in the photos below.

Perfect is Perfectly Boring

C.R. for Perrfect.png

I often get so frustrated, as a women, with all the emphasis on what is considered perfect beauty today. It is exhausting to continue to see faces plumped up with fillers, Botox and surgical enhancement to the point of extreme like Heidi Montag. Yes, we all remember Goldie Hawn's lips in the movie The First Wives Club. What I mean is the extreme of anything, as I'm not against change as we all know fashion is about change. Even Hollywood is looking for stars that are more natural looking for certain roles today. As an example, take a look above at Jean Paul Gaultier's fall/winter 2010.11 ad campaign above. It's missing what most magazines and advertisements almost always include which is a size 0, 2 or 4 white female. Instead Gaultier cast plus-size model Crystal Renn, along with Chinese model Ping Hue and French model Kelly Moreira.
When my son was only five years old, he came home from school with a drawing that was all marked up in red. The teacher said he drew a picture of a heart incorrectly because it was lopsided. I immediately pulled out my lopsided silver heart from Tiffany by Elsa Peretti to explain that it was considered an art form along with her financial success. My exact words to him were, "perfect is perfectly boring." So once again to prove my point and, hopefully to celebrate all women who are unique, I have decided to do a weekly post on, "Perfect is Perfectly Boring." Look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions.

Chicago's New Designers: Stars to Watch

Abby, Tracey, Barbara, and Shaun.png
Abby Zupancic & Tracey Tarrantino (ZZAZZ Productions), Barbara Glass & Shaun Sears

I attended a fabulous event on Friday, July 9 to celebrate the grand opening and media preview for The Don Julio Loft in West Town sponsored by CS Magazine (where I was the Founding Fashion Editor for 6 years) and Don Julio Tequila. The event featured a live runway show by Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy's State Street, and jewelry designer Erin Gordon with live music by Skyler Mendoza. This Grand Avenue building proved to be a unique space for an event and the surprise was the huge open loft space that overlooked the first floor - filled with party-goers, art, and fashion. You know I am a major supporter of Chicago Fashion Designers, and it was great to see that so many people wanted to attend and show their support alike, along with some great friends of mine that I ran into. What a great party! Special thanks to Abby Zupancic for the photos. Be sure to check them out in the gallery below.

The designers from the show included:
C/Fan, Nonnie Threads, Dottie's Delights, Peloton, Killian Gui, and M.C.C.

Best Kept Secrets: Alexander Calder & Contemporary Art

Me, with some of the contemporary artists featured in the current MCA exhibit

This week, after my wonderful visit to the store at the Museum of Contemporary Art, I just had to go back and spend more time at the new exhibit showcasing the best of Alexander Calder and other artists whose work reflects the theme of "Form, Balance, Joy." As always, I was thrilled to meet the talented artists whose colorful and abstract creations, some with elements from nature, are temporarily housed at the MCA. While this is no doubt an exciting time for them, it's also quite a treat for art-lovers, casual visitors to the museum, and of course myself!

Check out the photos below of some of the interesting highlights from the exhibit. I hope you rush over to see the fun and innovative pieces, which will be up through October 17. I know this will not be a Best Kept Secret for long!

Rag & Bone at Intermix: A Word from the Designers

rag & bon 031.JPG

It's always such a treat to meet the designers behind the names. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, the geniuses who create the edgy yet refined looks of Rag & Bone, are definitely two cool guys with great style sensibilities. I interviewed them last week at the party at the Gold Coast Intermix and learned a little about their ideas and inspiration. As is evident from their looks on the runway, they told me they like the idea of pairing mismatched pieces and putting together unlikely combinations to fashion a signature style. I couldn't agree more as I mentioned I have always believed "perfect is perfectly boring"!

I had a chance to speak with Marcus, who I stole away from the crowd and the champagne for a few minutes! Check out what he had to say about his designs.

Q: Rag & Bone is an interesting name for a clothing line, how did you choose it for your brand?
A: It really fits with the aesthetic of the brand. It reflects the feeling of dilapidated luxury, a tailored look that's also a little disheveled.

Q: I know that Rag & Bone came about from the desire to create the perfect pair of jeans. What do you think that is?
A: It's a lot about the denim, how the denim is made. They also need to show genuine care and craftsmanship while also using the highest quality fabric. This all leads to comfort, which is the most important thing.

Q: What would you say you notice about the celebrities who wear your clothing?
A: I think they choose Rag & Bone because the designs aren't ostentatious and they don't shout glamour or glitz, so the people who wear them are also somewhat subtle and understated in their style.

Q: Lastly, what could you tell me that is surprising?
A (from David): Marcus is a great photographer on the side of designing.
A (from Marcus): David eats the same thing every day for lunch!

It was great to learn these tidbits about the brand as well as the quirky habits of this amazingly talented duo. Check out the slideshow below for the looks that the buyers of Intermix selected from the Rag & Bone Fall/Winter 2010 collection for the store!

Best Kept Secrets: Museum of Contemporary Art Store

Ok, so you may not have the funds to purchase an Alexander Calder at the Museum of Contemporary Art's current show, but you can find some amazing pieces of art in jewelry, handbags, home accessories, and more at the MCA store. Maxine Weintraub, the jewelry and accessory buyer travels to interesting places like Lima, Peru, Paris and Amsterdam to uncover the unusual collection of goodies for sale. Ms. Weintraub describes the running thread through all her purchases as, "It's got to show an original creative edge that's a surprise and unpredictable. Everything has a story." She values her sales staff who are extremely knowledgeable as story tellers. Some of her exciting finds include a rubber band necklace from an Israeli designer and recycled laundry bags as a necklace owned by Maggie Daley. I personally found the "Sorority Girls" necklace of hand fused glass and photos a show stopper. Don't miss the wonderful assortment of kids' books and toys also.

Rag & Bone Party at Intermix

rag & bon 028.JPG

Me, with the designers of Rag & Bone

It's always interesting to see so many of the most fabulously dressed Chicagoans in one place! That's definitely what the scene was at last night's gathering at the Delaware Place Intermix for the designers of clothing line Rag & Bone. The champagne was flowing, but admist the fun, the most noticeable element of the night was of course the fashion! The designers themselves received much due attention, but the guests at the party were also worth checking out, as they were all so stylish in their understated glamour - a look that perfectly reflected the image of the Rag & Bone brand that was being celebrated. I loved everyone's shoes most of all, from Chanel and Fendi to Christian Louboutin and Brian Atwood! Check out the pics from the party below and make sure to come back next week for the interview with David & Marcus, the brains behind the beauty!

Best Kept Secrets: Naked at the Beach!

This week Meryl & I went looking to uncover another "Best Kept Secret" in Chicago. We asked Smokey, Meryl's black Lab, for some suggestions and she barked for a trip to the Montrose Dog Beach for some exercise and fun. The Montrose Dog Beach is currently the only legal off-leash beach with in the city of Chicago, and it's located at the northwest corner of Montrose Beach. If you have a furry friend, bring him or her along for a playdate with some of the city's other playful pets!

Of course I love to find any excuse to dress up for a party, but most of the other guests at the beach dressed in shorts, bathing suits and jeans or sans clothing like all the dogs. No designer doggy duds on these cool dogs - they are just are having fun, enjoying the water and sun!

Best Kept Secrets: Jennifer Miller

Jennifer Miller + MeJPG.JPG

Me and Jennifer

Last weekend I went to the salon of Michael and Michael to see an art exhibit of Jennifer Miller. It's so clever that artists are finding different venues to show their artwork to the public today! I was very impressed with her work, which represents her connection to nature. Miller says, "My paintings are created with the intention to enhance the truth that lies within the elements in nature and have the viewer connect to it within themselves."

After getting a BFA from University of Kansas, Miller began working as an assistant to the Cuban American painter Paul Sierra in Chicago, and then she worked as an interior designer in Chicago and Los Angeles for the past 12 years. She says, "Interior design is about assisting people create spaces with their vision in mind."

Don't miss this show as the work is indeed very beautiful and helps you to stop and think and embrace the gifts of nature. I want a piece of her work to hang in my own home!

Best Kept Secrets: Randolph Street Market

Last weekend I took a trip to the Randolph Street Market, located at the 1350 block of West Randolph Street
on the third weekend of each month through September, to see what I missed all last year. I was not going to let another summer pass without a stroll through the Indie Designer section inside the historic Plumblers Hall to check out what all the excitement is all about.

For those of you fashion lovers like me, Barbara Glass, I wanted to explore some of the jewelry, fashion, furniture, and interesting people that present their wares, along with the unique visitors... it's a great place for people watching! And did I mention that I fell in love with the most decadent and yummy handmade chocolates by Katerine Anne confections? Yes, in addition to being a fashionista, I am a chocoholic. The team of Stacy Rauba and Yutaka Fujita presented some fun items in handmade hot pads and beautiful fashion pieces in tops and bottoms. My traveling buddy for the day bought a silver ring that was designed by Rodrigo Nunez. Other vintage jewelry vendors included Tamara Wolff Designs, who was there with her daughter, as well as Juliet Jewelry, K-Fleye jewelry, Pam Corrick Yeterday's Glitz on Ruby Lane, Susan Elizabeth Designs, Bead of a Different Drum, and many others. One of the major fashion stars every year at the Indie show are the Double Stitch Twins, whose crochet pieces are a welcome addition to every woman's wardrobe.

It was a fun day and I would recommend that you don't exit until you try one of the chicken tamales. I know after you visit this great spot, the Randolph Street Market will no longer be a Best Kept Secret!

Fashion Forward: Giuliana Rancic

Guilianna Rancic + me1JPG.JPG

When Giuliana Rancic, "E "channel reporter, reality show personality, and wife of the first Apprentice winner, Bill Rancic, greeted me at Bloomingdale's over the weekend, she proved how warm and lovely she is. Her first comment as she saw me arrive with three of my interns was, "This must be a reality show!" Giuliana was at Bloomingdale's hosting their "Sip n' Swim" event, sponsored by Tropicana's new Trop50 juices. We all laughed as she continued to share some answers to my questions and yes, take pictures with the interns. It was just a delight to meet her and learn that beauty and brains do exist together with this star. She is successful and confident and stressed to my interns to follow their passions and she is truly an extraordinary woman.

BG: Most people might be surprised to learn that you have a Masters in Journalism from American U in DC. So how do you feel about having both looks and brains?

GR:  Oh thank you Barbara, you are too kind. But, most people are shocked when they hear that I have my masters in Journalism! My masters, however, is really important to me, because when I moved to Hollywood I wasn't the tallest, the prettiest, or the blondest, but having my masters put me ahead of all these other girls in the casting room. It's what really set me apart and it had the casting agents saying, "This girl is the REAL deal". In the end for me though, having my masters gave me the confidence and the self esteem and it let me, and the casting agents know, that this girl is smart, and she can't be stumped. Another thing most people don't know is that I used to work on Capitol Hill, like the Pentagon, White House, and just politics in general. I used to get in trouble though, because I used to try and put a spin on my segments and try to make politics fun, but that's the thing, it isn't!

BG: You came to the US from a small town near Naples, Italy. Living in DC your family didn't have the income to hire a tutor to teach you the language. You learned English by watching TV. Is that when you fell under the spell of TV?

GR:  Yes, definitely! I used to watch the news and the news anchors name was Barbara Harrison and it was easy to pick up the language that way. In news, you have to talk clearly and precisely so that everyone can understand what you are saying, and soon enough, I started picking up full sentences here and there. The funny thing is that we would sit at the dinner table and my parents would ask my older siblings how school was for them and they would struggle to speak the language, but here's me picking up the language from sitting at home watching the news and still to this day they have Italian accents and I don't.

BG: You are obviously a mentor for women of all ages. What would you tell women that wanted to pursue their dreams?

GR:  I try to tell women that you need to work in the field that you love, even if that means taking a step down and working from the bottom and working your way to the top. It's all about putting your foot in the door and making a name for yourself. It also seems today that a lot of kids feel entitled to jobs, but you need to work your butt off and NO attitude!

BG: It seems that your husband, yes Bill Rancic, winner of the first Apprentice, Entrepreneur, and all around stud, is every woman's dream. What can you tell us that he does to annoy you or is her perfect?

GR:  He is a total NEAT FREAK! Everything is so organized from his closet to the rest of our home! And he will not make a bet to save his life! Especially when I know I'm right! He also won't help me make the bed! First thing in the morning he rolls out of bed and there go the sheets to the floor, and I'm like hunny! A little help please? And there I am running around the bed to all four corners tucking and pulling all by myself! But he's lucky I love him so much, so I let little things like that slide.

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise my readers.

GR:  Well I don't do the whole sexy underwear thing when I go to bed! I'm all about the full underwear, granny panty thing! And Bill's response to me is, "Is this marriage?"

Celebrity Hat Designer Comes to Chicago: Philip Treacy

Philip picks out a hat for me.png

I sat down with an old friend, Philip Treacy, hat designer to the celebrities, who was visiting Chicago at Neiman Marcus on Michigan Avenue to ask him to answer some questions. On his last visit to Chicago, I interviewed him at NBC5 on my weekly segment along with going with me to talk to students at the School of the Art Institute. He was as charming then as he was this week. With his continued success, his kindness expands.

BG: You have been quoted as saying, "I only feel dressed in the morning when I have my thimble on my middle finger. It stays there all day." What is the one thing in your closet that you wouldn't leave home without?
PT: My thimble and I love my electric blue hoodie.

BG: You have done a lower priced collection for Marks & Spencer in Europe. Would you ever consider doing a collection in the U.S. for Target or H&M?
PT: Yes, but they haven't asked me yet.
(I loved when he said yes, but no one has asked him!)

BG: Your couture hats have been on the fashion runways with Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld and Versace. Do you have a favorite designer?
PT: Alexander McQueen because his talent was extra. Design is quite lose today. Alexander McQueen is a real designer and Lanvin is good too. Design is developing and idea from scratch. It isn't copying a dress that you like and making it in a different color.

BG: You have been quoted as saying that you eat the same lunch everyday...double eggs, chips, beans, toast and tea at a messy spoon cafe in Victoria Coach Station. What is your favorite meal to eat in Chicago?
PT: I love Mcdonald's, it's delicious.
(I suggested he go to M Burger instead if McDonald's. It's the newest burger joint off Michigan Avenue and everything on the menu is under $5.)

BG: You have designed hats for a variety of women from Camilla Parker Bowles for her wedding to Prince Charles to Sarah Jessica Parker and Lady Gaga. What do they have in common besides good taste?
PT: My cleintele are fashion icons. They entertain us and we are attracted to this. There are movie stars that are perfect creatures but it's hard to empathize with them. My clients you mentioned are imperfect and we can identify with them.

BG: So we have all read that Lady Gaga wants to intern with you? Is that something you would consider?
PT: If she can sew maybe, if she can't sew no.

I also met Philip's creative assistant, Stefan, who was so kind and fun to talk to as this was his first trip to Chicago. He expressed how much he was enjoying the city and we talked about the Sex and the City 2 premieres coming up in London, Tokyo and New York. He told me that Philip did design hats for SJP but they don't know what she'll choose to wear until she steps out at each premiere. My intern, Josh asked Stefan what the hats look like and he replied with a smile, "its top secret!"

Best Kept Secrets: Men Behind the Curtain, John Diekmann & Joel Klaff

me talking to Joel on movie set JPG.JPG

Me, talking to Joel on the movie set

Remember that line in the Wizard of Oz...."Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain"?.... Well when it comes to the creative team of John Diekmann and Joel Klaff; the owners of Workroom at 1906 Belmont in Chicago, that statement couldn't be further from the truth! They refer to themselves as the "men behind the curtain" and indeed, that's exactly who they are. When I first met Joel Klaff, he was a performance artist (yes, way before Lady Gaga) named Guy Taylor at the Chicago History Museum with an installation called Astro Man.  At the time, I was the fashion editor at the now defunct magazine, Inside Chicago, and was looking to do a story on talented creative people in the art and fashion world. Joel was living in a humble Bucktown abode before the community was the place to be. I must admit, I lost track of Joel until recently, when I learned he was part of the Oscar award-winning set design team for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. When Meryl suggested going to Workroom on Belmont, I was finally able to catch up with him and his partner in life and in business, John. Upon entering the shop, I was immediately greeted by the extremely charming John Diekmann, who refers to the shop as an extension of his home....and that it is! Surrounded  by fabulous drapery and objects extraordinaire, John explained, "We are the go-to-guys for textiles and the unusual. We are the one-stop shopping spot as we do custom bedding, pillows draperies, rug and wall coverings and all the work is done on-site!"

Both designers believe in giving back, working with organizations such as Little City and the Arts of Life. I later got to interview Joel via telephone as he was at an undisclosed location working on yet again another movie with Victor J. Zolfo (Benjamin button set decorator). Joel's other credits include "Ray," "Empire Falls," "Dreamer," "All the Kings Men," and "Public Enemies". Both Joel and John admit that they don't follow trends but like to create them as Joel stated, "...when we spot something that can become a trend, we know it in our veins before others see it"...and that they do with beauty and grace and add their own touch of funky. So another secret is out as I so enjoyed my afternoon experiencing this creative duo...I wanted to walk out with at least 10 items from the store, including their most adorable pugs, not to be left unmentioned, Trudy and Brenda.

Best Kept Secrets: Wolfbait & B-girls

Me & Shirley PG.JPG
Me & Shirley

Living in Chicago, we are surrounded by many neighborhoods rich in architecture and history. Meryl & I took our weekly hunt to uncover some hidden places that some of you may know and others, like me, may not be aware of. Our first stop this week was to Logan Square. When I saw the name of a boutique, Wolfbait & B-girls I was somewhat surprised to see the gems inside including clothing, accessories, baby stuff, stationary, and more.

You may have guessed that "B-girls" stands for "Bad Girls" - who could refuse that invitation? One of the owners, Shirley Kienitz, gave us a tour and explained that the store has been at its current location, 3131 W.Logan Blvd., for over four years. She and her business partner, Jenny Stadler, met when there were selling their designs to other boutiques. They opened their store as as a place to showcase local talent and to act as a resource to help support emerging designers from the area. The store is a collection of 160 local artists along with two fair-traded companies that are Chicago-based but a percentage of their proceeds goes to charities such as Stop Human Traffic. One brand of handbags, Malia Designs, states its mission is "To Carry A Cause."

It was indeed exciting to discover all this amazing talent from Chicago's pool of designers & artists. Be sure to continue to drop by because every week we have new treasures to share with you!

Best Kept Secrets: Bruce Robbins, Executive Director of Lillstreet Art Center

Me + BruceJPG.JPG

How did a nice Jewish boy from Glencoe, who majored in art history at Lake Forest College and had no desire to be in business, fall into the role of starting a ceramic center in 1975? Bruce Robbins is a likable guy with great charm who has combined 54 artists, 21 classrooms, and a kids' camp program to create his latest home, the Lillstreet Art Center at 4401 N. Ravenswood in Chicago. Although his first studio only had 12 members and one classroom, today, most of the art world in Chicago and beyond know of his success and excellent reputation. Ceramic Artist, Karen Patinkin (featured last week) has been a part of his program for over 25 years and continues to be a very active member.

Classes are offered in textiles, printing, glass beading, pottery, and more, as well as and the latest in technology: digital arts.  There's something to encompass everyone's creativity!  When I asked Bruce what he attributes to his success, he said, "We're community-oriented. I wanted a place where people intermingle." And this they most certainly do!

On the near-future burner, this amazing man with the creative business mind will be opening an artist workshop residency in Michigan.
On your visit, don't miss the interesting shop on the first floor with a representation of the artists' work and the outstanding cafe with delicious, healthy food that serves as a not-for-profit organization feeding 800 youth a week. Stay tuned for a post about this great way to give back in the future!

As usual, I loved having lunch with Meryl K. on our weekly Friday "Best Kept Secrets" outing. I ate all the chocolate cookies we had planned to share as I am still the "Cookie Monster" and it was worth every calorie!

Best Kept Secrets: Karen Patinkin, Ceramic Artist

Karen + meJPG.JPG

Once again Meryl K. and myself buckled ourselves in and drove off on our hunt for some more of Chicago's "Best Kept Secrets" to share with you! Meryl, who has a great eye for fashion - yes, she worked for me in my Oak St Boutique in the past - and whose husband is an artist, told me we were off to the Lill Street Art Center to see the work of famous Chicago ceramic artist, Karen Patinkin. (Karen is niece of director, Sheldon Patinkin and cousin to actor Mandy Patinkin!)

Karen has been diligent at her craft for 30 years! I sat down with her to discuss her exciting work, which consists of unique prints and patterns that are right in sync with what's on the runway. Check out my interview with Karen below!

BG: What influences your work?
KP: I am definitely influenced by textiles, books, and travel (she recently returned from a trip to Africa).

BG: How do you keep your ideas fresh after 30 years of work?
KP: My style is always evolving.

BG: Have you added any new shapes?
KP: I am always coming up with new forms, surfaces and decorations and backgrounds.

So what is the most popular color that she sells in her collections? Of course, just like fashion, black is a staple, along with prints including flowers, leaves, and paisleys.

It was indeed exciting for us to feel the passion that this very talented artist continues to exhibit in her latest collection. I would love to know her dreams, as I'm sure they are full of creativity! You can view Karen's work at the Lill Street Art Center and at the up-and-coming 57th Street Art Fair, which takes place on June 5 and 6.

Stay tuned for next week's "Best Kept Secrets" to learn more about the Lill Street Art Center, located at 4401 N. Ravenswood in Chicago, as we chatted with the founder and ate at the outstanding restaurant housed in the center... we can't wait to share it with you!

Best Kept Secrets: Judy Lichtenstein, Artist/Designer...Fashion & Yoga Collide

Judy Lichtenstein + me JPG.JPG

Yesterday, my friend Meryl K. and I decided to take a little tour of the city to uncover some of Chicago's "Best Kept Secrets" to share with my readers. Meryl suggested that we make our first stop at the Cornelia Arts Building @ 1800 West Cornelia to check out the latest designs of local star, Judy Lichtenstein. Judy, a Pittsburgh native, has been designing her whimsical creations in Chicago for over 25 years, but new and exciting ideas are always exploding in her studio. When we opened the door to her studio, I was immediately lost in a candy land of color, with rolls of fabric and clothing everywhere! But here's her latest...Yoga t-shirts for both men and women in fun colors and exciting images. With her newest venture, she's right in sync with today's fashion and fitness craze.  Whether you wear these fabulous creations to exercise or just look good, you have to check them out!  Even the celebs...such as Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Aniston and Meg Ryan are doing yoga to keep their bods in shape, so we can let the secret out that they should be sporting a Judy Design. Here in Chicago, Judy's t-shirts can be  purchased at Moksha Yoga Center's three locations.

Judy's influence for all her designs, which include adult coats, whimsical children's hats, pillows and blankets (which sell at Takashimaya in NYC) come from her love of textiles, color, primitive designs and whimsy.  Don't miss the spring show at the Cornelia Arts Building, 1800 West Cornelia, opening Friday, May 21st (6-10pm), where works of other talented artists will also be showcased. You won't want to miss this's a secret you can tell!

Check out photos below from Judy's studio as well as photos of celebrities who love yoga.

M Burger: Hamburgers to Fit Everyone's Budget

Manager Partners Scott Burton, Jean Joho + Me 7JPG.JPG

I have some fun food news. Today, in this economy, hamburgers are back in fashion with a vengeance. And lucky for us, a hot new very small carry-out place called M Burger has opened just a few weeks ago at 161 E. Huron which also happens to be the side entrance to the upscale and award winning Tru restaurant. No, they don't share the same kitchen but they do share providing good food. There are lines around the block with customers coming back  again several days in a week, like me, to sample the delicious burgers from $2.49 to $4.49 for a double M Burger....what a deal! And don't miss the yummy shakes. In addition there is something for vegetarians called "Nurse Betty" with no meat. There is a small sitting area for 8 but plan on carrying out since there is little room with the constant crowds.

Chicago Blackhawks: Patrick Sharp

Patrick Sharp + me.png

Patrick Sharp, number 10 of the Chicago Blackhawks, is just one of those perfect athletes that every manager dreams of having on their team. In addition to being an outstanding left wing man, he is charitable, kind and charming. And did I mention that he is just as handsome in person as he is in his photos. Last week I was one of the lucky fans that was at the game to watch them win 2-0 against Phoenix. The two winning goals were made by Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa. Chicagoans are so proud of our winning Blackhawks as they continue to support numerous charities with all their outstanding work in the community. Blackhawks Charities has given 700,000 to 16 grant recipients in 2009-10. Lucky for me, I had a few minutes with this sexy guy (he was one of Victoria Secret's candidates for sexiest athlete in Chicago) to ask him a few fun questions on his style:

BG: Does a movie star, past or present, influence your style of dress?
PS: My influences are my teammates, Adam Burish and Marian Hossa.

BG: I know you recently became engaged. Does your fiance give you advice on dressing?
PS: She is the one in charge of my clothes.

BG: When you want to feel comfortable and relaxed, what do you wear?
PS: I wear pajama bottoms. I wear Lulu Lemon because they are very comfortable.

BG: What is the one thing about you that would surprise my readers?
PS: I have a Basset Hound. My family owned them also.

By the way, Patrick did indeed look stylish in his three button suit, blue striped shirt and tie during our interview.

Marc Jacobs Supports Art: Party at the Modern Wing

me + guests.JPG

It was a fun weekend for me kicking off on Thursday with the Marc Jacobs party at the Hotel Elysian, I know you saw that post already, followed by another great party on Friday night at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute. Yes, we all know that fashion and art overlap and so does Marc Jacobs who was one of the sponsors of the party hosted by Evening Associates for the William Eggleston photo exhibit. In the sold-out crowd of 700 I saw lots of women in boots, interesting back and lace  detailing on dresses, to blue jeans on some cool guys. Check out the pictures from this fabulous event!

Fashion Designer Barbara Bates Donates 1,000 Prom Garments

Bates & Glass small.jpg

I had the privilege of sitting down this week with Chicago fashion designer and philanthropist Barbara Bates, a woman who translates her passion not only into a living, but also into a way to brighten the lives of some of the city's less-than-fortunate youth. Barbara grew up in Chicago, loved fashion at a young age, and her adorable boutique and studio now live in the South Loop - you can find her at 2031 S. Indiana Ave. But before her current success, she faced hardships as a teen mother, experiences which now motivate her to give back and channel her creativity and fabulous style sense to a greater good. Watch the interview to hear Barbara talk about fashion and her incredible foundation!

Marc Jacobs Party at the Elysian

The fashion was out and about last night at the Elysian Hotel. Roughly 200 party goers enjoyed a fabulous dinner of foie gras macarons and pain de mie crusted turbot at this lavish dinner party celebrating the opening of the new Marc Jacobs store at 11 E Walton. Many of the fashionable party goers flew in from New York City for this party, which didn't disappoint. The DJ kept the music spinning all night, while the photo-booth kept me, and many of the guests, entertained. The party didn't end at the Elysian, a charter bus waited out side to shuttle the guests to local hot spot Howl at the Moon, where we danced, drank, and had a great time. The swag bags came equipped with Marc Jacobs book bags, as well as his lovely sent Lola. This truly was an event not to miss!

C/FAN Preview at the Dubhe Carreno Gallery

Christina & her proud mom jpg.jpg

I must admit that I haven't attended a Gen Art event in several years but couldn't wait to attend the C/FAN fashion show featuring the talented new designer Christina Fan at the Dubhe Carreno Gallery. It was a packed crowd of some the cities' most hip and stylish that came to support the show of this former Northwestern Graduate who put a career in law on the back burner to follow her passion to design clothing. The crowd was dressed in lots of slouchy knit hats, bowties and outstanding chain jewelry from FAB STUDIO. Excellent hors d'oeuvres were served of wonderful cheeses from August Grocery Store & samples from Via Carducci along with drinks. Of course the fashions were the highlight of the night with models with makeup of blackened eye sockets which helped to place the focus on the clothing. We saw outstanding tunic tops, jackets and leggings. One of my personal favorites was a deep v-neck sleeveless top with a sheer insert that brought back the sensuous look of those worn by the movie stars of the 40's. It will be fun to watch the progress of C/FAN as the collection continues to grow stronger each season....congrats to Christina. You can also find some of Christina's excellent fashion reports/posts on my blog.

Street Style Thursday: Hollis Sigler Opening, Angel Otero Work Displayed at Chicago Cultural Center

me & artist Angel Otero pg.jpg

While I did love the idea of bumping into celebs in Palm Springs at gallery openings, Chicago does provide plenty of glitz and fun also.  Recently I went to the Hollis Sigler opening (Jan 23- March 28) at the Chicago Cultural Center. It was packed with artists, students, art lovers, and people who enjoy free wine along with free admission. Having purchased a Hollis Sigler for my home early on in her career, it was so rewarding to see the attention she continues to garner even after her death with her beautiful images.

Puerto RIcan born Angel Otero, a recent MFA grad of the Art Institute is one of the hot new darlings and rising star that everyone is buzzing about in the Chicago art world and whose work was on display (Jan 23-March 28) on the 4th floor gallery. It will be fun to watch his progress!

Man-Up Monday: Know your 'Dos

Happy Monday to all my Chicago men!  Today on Man-Up Monday, we wanted to quickly discuss a topic very important to all of your wives and lady-friends:  hair cuts for spring!  Yes--we know, we know:  "Well, what's in it for me?", you ask.  Though these new 'dos apply strictly to the ladies, we thought it would be nice if you had a little "style education" in the hair cut arena.  These tips come right from Michael Jacobson, stylist and co-owner of the very popular Michael & Michael Salon (take your babe there for the best cut in Chicago!)  After all, having a well-rounded knowledge of what your woman likes (hair and clothing) can only help you in the long run!  (Plus, there's some pretty hot photos in the gallery that you wont get yelled at for looking through.  (You're welcome.))  So, polish up on your "bobs and bangs" and you just might be "the lucky one" tonight!

p.s. Check back next Monday for another Man-Up Monday post and don't miss our Guest Blogger, Christina Fan, as she shares with us her style knowledge tomorrow!

Sexy Hair for Spring:

...brought to you by my friends at Michael & Michael Salon...

This spring, shorter textured cuts are in - still balanced, blended and feminine, but with a little rock star thrown in.   Hair that is too long, flat, and straight is definitely out.  Think choppier layers, still with some length, not too clean, but not too messy either. This slightly shaggier look, when done right, still reads as completely feminine and playful.  (Kristen Stewart)

Even classic shorter cuts like the bob and pixie can still be in and edgy - with a couple of twists.

Consider updating your bob by adding a razored or more textured finish.   For a shorter bob, the length should land at the jaw line (Katie Holmes). A longer bob should skim the shoulder (Heidi Kluhm).  To create some drama, add bangs to either length bob - this will pop the eyes and cheekbones and create a really sexy, flirty look (Rhianna).

To transform the short pixie, add a longer asymmetrical bang.  This softer, but still dramatic, look will also bring out the eyes and cheek bones (Keira Knightley).

Determining which shorter, edgier shape is right for you, ultimately depends on your face shape, neck length and overall head shape.  And make sure your stylist knows the difference between drama (Victoria Beckham) and disaster (Kate Gosselin:  pre-extensions)!

-Michael Jacobson

Spring 2010 Trends:

...with Christina Fan...

To Harem or Not to Harem?

Women of Chicago, what are your thoughts on the harem pant trend? While I admit these roomy pantaloons are a very comfortable and stylish alternative to the constant legging or skinny jean, not every woman can catch Aladdin's affection like Princess Jasmine. If you've been skeptical of this trend, now is your chance to test the waters. Thank the Spring winds for they have blessed us with an update to the much feared harem!

This season's runways overflowed with roomy trousers that said an enthusiastic goodbye to the dumpy pants of yore and a hearty hello to roomy trousers.  Rather than screaming "Wayward Traveler," Spring 2010's dropped-crotch drawers joyously shout, "Crisp, Class and Ease!" With heavy hitting majors such as Givenchy, Dries Van Noten, and Lanvin forging the way, this season's must have is available in a variety of patterns and textures for versatile wearability. Designers have even considered the warmer months by offering shorter versions that cleverly resemble skirts.  So get your cartwheel ready ladies, for with these easy bottoms, wardrobe malfunctions are now a thing of the past!

**Visit the gallery below to view some images collected by Christina Fan, just for you!  Be sure to check out her fabulous collection, C/FAN, offering beautiful garments that shift seamlessly from work to play...  Follow our guest blogger next week as Christina brings us more trends for spring/summer 2010!**

Man-Up Monday: Proper Hair Grooming

Happy Monday to all my readers!  Today on Man-Up Monday we bring you an important topic that is vital to all Chicago men in the city (and really, in the world!)  Yes, it's time to tackle those brows and backs and beards for a little conversation about proper hair grooming.  These tips come right from Michael Jacobson, stylist and co-owner of the very popular Michael & Michael Salon.  So, to all my friendly (furry) fellow's:  Have a look, get some tips and try them for yourself!  After all, what do you have to lose?  Other than all of that unattractive and unruly hair...

Men's Hair Grooming 101:

...brought to you by my friends at Michael & Michael Salon...

Complete grooming for the modern, stylish man goes well beyond getting a good haircut and shaving your face.  Too often, men overlook the importance of also maintaining the hair on the rest of their bodies.  As men age, they often start to lose hair on their head while at the same time seeing hair grow more in places where they don't want it - the nose, ears, eyebrows, neck and back.   Chest hair, too, and become unruly and need trimming.  It is just as important to manage excess body hair, as it is the thinning hair on your head.

To look your best, follow these grooming tips:

(1)  Thinning Hair.  Don't kid yourself - cut it off.  Growing thinning hair longer only accentuates it and makes the scalp look barer. NEVER try to hide it with a comb over or any other "combing trick" you may come up with!  This makes hair loss even more noticeable.    Keeping the hair shorter on top with the sides and back high and tight actually makes the hair look thicker.  Creating a square shape cut also makes the face shape appear more square which tends to look thinner and younger. Hair products can also help.  XFusion is a hair powder made up of organic keratin fibers that can hide the scalp and help thinning hair look thicker and fuller.  A very light pomade or gel works best to style thinning hair.  Be careful, though, not to  use too much gel or pomade as this clumps hair together and exposes the scalp more.

(2)  Maintain the sideburn.  Sideburns affect the overall shape of the hair cut and face shape and should be cut at approximately mid ear depending on ear size and face shape - not too long and not too short.  To maintain the length when shaving, turn your head to the side, place razor straight and then down stroke.  Turning your head to the side ensures keeping the razor strait so you won't cut the sideburn at an angle.

(3)  Nose and Ears. There is nothing more unattractive than sprouts coming out of your nose and ears!   Get a good nose/ear trimmer and trim both areas as often as you shave.

(4)  Trim your bushy brows.  Your stylist should trim your brows as part of your haircut.  To do it yourself, comb the brow down and while holding the comb flat against your head, clip any hair that comes through the comb.

(5)  Don't get caught looking like a Bear.  Too much hair on the back and chest is not a good thing.  (Especially if you're spending any time at the beach.)  Invest in a clipper with a guard like the one's a barber may use.  You should shave the hair short (cropped) but don't shave it off (unless you are in great shape and have the pecs and abs to show off) No shiny bellies or man boobs please!  Use the #3 guard on the chest and #1 on the back.  Waxing is an option for your back, but it can be painful, expensive and cause irritation resulting in in-grown hairs that can become infected resembling acne.  If you go the waxing route, see a licensed professional.

Most of the overall grooming listed above can be done by your stylist or barber (excepting nose, back & chest) and simply maintained by you in between visits.  Your stylist should cut your brows down, clean hair from ears, trim and shape sideburns and shave the neck.  The rest, is up to you.

**Have a look at the gallery (if you dare!) and see some of the exact reasons why this post made its' way to Man-Up Monday!  Many thanks to Michael & Michael for bringing this all too often NOT talked about topic to the forefront.  See below--and get buzzing, clipping, or cutting!"

Accessory Friday: Gloves, Gloves, Gloves!

Accessories Are a Must: Gloves

Wearing gloves has always been a fashion statement for me.  My mother never left the house without gloves, even if she was just going to lunch with the ladies.  (Of course, she also wore pantyhose in 90° weather because that was her definition of a lady.)  Today gloves are taking on a new twist and lucky for me, I have a large shoebox dedicated to my glove collection.  From Michael Jackson's "one glove" to Michelle Obama wearing "the green gloves" (from Banana Republic) at the inauguration--gloves are definitely "in" again for all the Chicago fashionistas. I am a big fan of wearing fingerless gloves layered over fingered gloves for a look that can be unique. Whatever you do, have fun with this accessory, as there are so many choices this season.

NYE 2009: Party at the Elysian Hotel

The lobby at the beautiful new Elysian in Chicago:

It was a girl's night out for me at the new beautiful Hotel Elysian before joining my husband.  The old rules about staying home if you didn't have a date were left behind in the last century.  It was all about having fun with your friends, husband or a date.  The Balsan bar was a perfect spot to launch the start of my celebration with the help of the charming general manager Andreas Schreiner and my friends Doris and Marian.  The women were dressed from chic to casual, some with formal gowns and feathers and some with a great pair of blue jeans. It was all about finding your own comfort level and staying warm on a very cold evening.

What a fabulous night to celebrate a fantastic New Year...

Winter Shorts: IN or OUT?

Who Wears Short Shorts?
short shorts 2(10).jpg

Of course shorts look amazing on sun-tanned legs in the summer but does this trend work for winter?  Many Chicago women have decided to charge forward and wear leggings under shorts or tights with the addition of boots to create a winter look that is a show stopper--OR--is it just absurd?  I prefer wearing my boot length jeans over my Hanro underwear to keep me warm when I walk my dog Gage in the frigid temperatures.  What do you think?

Guest Blogger: Christina Fan, Designer of C/FAN

I'm excited to announce that the beautiful and talented Christina Fan will be our guest blogger for this month!  She will be addressing some of the hottest trends for Spring 2010 that will soon hit our favorite Chicago stores like H&M, Zara and Forever 21.  Christina is a Chicago-based womenswear designer.  Her line, C/FAN, was recently featured in the 2009 Gen Art "Fresh Faces in Fashion" Show and will be carried at Le Dress,
Jake, Bonnie & Clyde's, and Tula.  I am so pleased to have Christina share with us some of her expert advice on one of my favorite topics...

Spring 2010 Trends:
...with Christina Fan...

Move over skimpy dresses and make way for the new hit trend of Spring 2010: Separates.  Follow this season's ABC's with designers such as Alexander Wang, Balmain and Chloe, all of whom embrace versatility and texture with separate pieces that easily convert from work to play.

With a nod to the consumer's need to budget, designers are opting for pieces that can be worn time and time again while slipping seamlessly into existing wardrobes.  Don't be fooled though, today's separates are far from any old sweater set.  Chicago's boutiques will stock up on key pieces such as sexy jackets, draped tops, and body hugging bottoms in a variety of weights and textures.

The best thing about separates?  You can make a bold statement by combining lace, leather and sequins or just add a bit of *pop* to your outfit with a sheer top.  Ladies, charge past 2009 with force and dressing accordingly; find your favorite separates in a flattering neutral and layer to your heart's content!

Wide Leg Jeans: IN or OUT?

theory Max C pants $253.jpg

Blame it on the revival of the 80's trends with biker chic, sequins and glitz--but are we buying into the bell bottoms or wide leg jeans that stores are trying to push? Maybe it worked for Sonny and Cher but most Chicago women are sticking with their skinny jeans. Even Alessandra Ambrosio (Victoria's Secret Model) wore skinny jeans when I interviewed her recently on my blog.  I did meet several women that admitted they did own the boot cut but nixed it in favor of their skinny jeans (which fit into their over-the-knee boots to keep them warm this winter.) While Seven jeans are still popular some of the newer names in the designer world are James Jeans and J Brand with their very slim leg also known as "denim leggings." Of course what is most important at any price range is the fit!

What do you think...Wide leg jeans:  IN or OUT?

Men Gone "Mad"

The New York Times recently highlighted men's fashion in an article titled, "Dress Codes:  Dressing for Success, Again" by David Colman.  The story discusses how young men these days are looking to fashions of the past and are dressing up more than ever.  The photo spread is so much fun, as I am a big fan of the "Mad Men" look that has recently gained so much popularity in the fashion world.  The spread was shot by talented photographer Douglas Friedman, with typography by Jennifer Green and features fashions by some of our favorite designers and retailers.  I have seen this trend take hold in Chicago as more young men begin to dress up in bowties, waist coats and even top hats!  Have a look at the photo gallery and pass on the tips to the man in your life.  After all, a little argyle never hurt anyone...

To get your hands on some of these looks, visit The Fine and Dandy Shop for a great selection of bowties, fedoras and everything "Mad"!

Leggings: IN or OUT?

I have been a big fan of leggings for over two years, but I am over it already!

Every woman, from career professionals to three-year-olds, are wearing them.  Like Madonna and Audrey Hepburn, I want to set trends that work for me, not just follow the pack. Some women in Chicago (and in advertisements) are coming up with some novel alternatives to leggings. And yes, I still prefer to go barelegged or wear fishnets--unless it is below zero in Chicago!

How do you feel about this trend?

Are leggings:  IN or OUT?

Have a look at the gallery and leave me a comment with your thoughts about leggings.  What do YOU think?  Are Leggings IN or OUT?!

Gems and Carats and Clusters: OH MY!

Thumbnail image for FieldMuseum4.jpg

We are so lucky to have fabulous museums in Chicago.  One of my favorites, since I was a small child, is the Field Museum.  Recently, the museum reopened the Grainger Hall of Gems with many new collections added by some of Chicago's leading jewelers commissioned to create never-before-seen pieces.

One of my favorites, designed by Ellie Thompson, is a unique 18k necklace with one hundred diamonds and a tassel of chains and golden beryls.  The necklace is also featured on the back cover of the companion book from the exhibit, Gems and Gemstones: Timeless natural Beauty of the Mineral World.

Some other Chicago jewelry designers that are part of the show include Lester Lampert, Ellie Thompson of Ellie + Co., Mark Scherer, Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co., Oak Park Jewelers and Mish NY.

In addition to her work for the Grainger Hall of Gems, Thompson created a special wedding collection for The Field Museum Store. These designs are only available at The Field Museum Store.

For more information on award-winning designer, Ellie Thompson and to view her classic, contemporary and custom fine jewelry please visit

About the Grainger Exhibit:

"Long a Field Museum favorite, the Grainger Hall of Gems has been completely renovated and now contains many never-before-seen pieces. The renovated Hall of Gems features a unique display that shows gemstones as they are found in nature, as cut and polished gems, and as stunning jewelry created by top designers - making it the most comprehensive exhibition of its kind between the east and west coasts. Many of the pieces on display are a part of the Museum's original collection, dating back to the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The dazzling mix of jewelry ranges from antique pieces to those made exclusively for the renovated Hall of Gems by well-known Chicago designers."

The Field Museum is open every day from 9am to 5pm (last admission is 4pm). Closed on Christmas Day.

For more information on the Grainger Hall of Gems or Field Museum Store go to

Now, be a gem, and get over to visit all the wonderful exhibits at the fascinating Field Museum!

Winter Coats: Other Options

me sherling pg.jpg

OK, so I was thinking, even though  I did post puffer coats last week, I didn't think it was fair to only highlight one option for winter coats - there are definitely other ways to stay warm AND remain stylish this winter.  If you are earning a salary in the six figure income bracket, have a sugar daddy or a grandmother that passed on her coat to you, it could be a fabulous mink...there is nothing warmer. My choice is a sherling that I love but a great cloth coat worn with layers can keep you warm & cozy also.

Puffer Coats: A Winter Must

me in pufferjpg.jpg

It is almost impossible to survive winter in Chicago without a nice, warm puffer coat. Once again, this is not one of my favorite trends but it does do the job of keeping one warm & cozy. Thankfully, everyone looks less like the Michelin Man and more stylish today with the new styles available from short jackets to very long coats. Of course the most popular color is still black. Even I caved in to participate in this trend as I am so-o-o cold in winter.

Check out the gallery for more pics!  (I included some pics of celebrities in their coats for a little more style inspiration)

MCA: Art to Make You Think

works of Ettore Sottsass JPG.JPG

If you love fashion, you have to follow art as so many designers are influenced by the art world. As I mentioned when I went to the event "First Friday" at the MCA I saw the amazing exhibit called "Italic," Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution. 1968 - 2008. When you are viewing the exhibit, be sure to notice the work of Ettore Sottsass who was a former architect & co founder of the design group Memphis. One of the pieces I cherish in my home was a gift from my parents of a very colorful clock from the Memphis Group. The show claims that Sottsass used forms, colors & materials to undermine traditional definitions of good taste. I always love both clothing & art that share a sense of humor. Also check out the work of Ugo Mulas, whom I first uncovered at the Venice Biennale Exhibit and the exhibit of Alexander Calder.  We are so lucky to have outstanding museums in Chicago

Boots with Style

for cover over the knee jpg.jpg

Well I told you yesterday how I feel about Uggs so I thought I would show you some boots that I think are very chic. OK, maybe they are not as warm or comfortable but isn't it all about looking great also, otherwise why bother to put on clothes?!!

Uggs: In or Out?

Thumbnail image for uggs laced.jpg

Well most of you know that I am not a fan of Uggs as I would not include them in the category of chic accessories. But, with the recent cold weather in Chicago you can't walk 10 feet without seeing a pair of the furry boots.

So, being the reporter I am, I wanted to know what was the attraction? Every single women uttered the same comments...the most comfortable and warm boots I ever owned. I am not convinced yet, but wait until the snow keeps falling.  And if I do convert - I might have to opt for the slightly more chic version from Tory Burch! Check out the gallery for more pics and let us hear your thoughts - are Uggs In or Out?

'Cliche' at the Museum of Contemporary Art

It was a cold, cold night in Chicago but it was hot, hot, hot inside the Museum Of Comtemporary Art's monthly First Fridays event named Cliche. Over 1700 people gathered to hear music from the local DJ's, nibble on Wolfgang Puck's appetizers and experience the  iMac G5 digital dating bar among other activities. Of course, being happily married, I was there just to see the fashions and take a long peek at the amazing art exhibit called "ITALICS."  (I promise to show you some of my favorite images from the show later)  And what was the signature look of the evening on most of the women? You guessed it....the color black which I told you worked best for the Thanksgiving Day holiday on my video. Let's face it, black is the perfect color for any ocassion. I did think the one dress that was a standout in the crowd was silver. And some of the guys in the crowd were equally creative.

Guest Blogger: Christine Kaparos, Deparment Manager, Neiman Marcus

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with my friend Christine Kaparos, Department Manager Ladies Shoes, Neiman Marcus -Michigan Avenue, to discuss one of my favorite topics...

The Hottest 2009 Fall Boot Trends for Women

From rubber rain boots to boots with hardware, boots are a must for the current fashion season.  Neiman Marcus has a wide variety of styles from the top shoe designers such as: Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Gucci, Chanel, Elizabeth and James and Ralph Lauren.
Over the knee boots are everywhere!  They are sleek, sexy and sophisticated. Wear your boots with skinny jeans, skirts, leggings, or your favorite little black dress.  They can turn any outfit into an instant knock out.
Ankle boots should be your go to accessory.  They will elevate an everyday look into a hot fashion statement. Choose from thick and chunky, lacy and sexy, or laden with hardware.  Ankle boots are guaranteed to work with your entire fashion wardrobe
Shoe booties are another popular trend.  They can be found in several fabrications and styles. Wear your leather or suede booties now, and purchase a pair with extreme cut outs that will carry you into the spring season.
Tall, short, closed toe or peep toe, there is a boot style for every occasion and every wardrobe option. Rock your favorite footwear for a chic show stopping statement.

Chicago Retail Legend Joan Weinstein Passed Away

Joan Weinstein

So sad to learn that the former Queen of Oak Street, Joan Weinstein, passed away over the weekend. Joan Weinstein opened Ultimo in 1969 where she continued to add to the Ultimo Enterprises on Oak Street with Giorgio Armani, Sonia Rykiel and Jil Sander. She later expanded to other cities opening Ultimo boutiques in San Francisco & Dallas.

Her career began in Real Estate and she eventually entered into retailing with her husband Jerry Weinstein. But it was after her husband's death that she began to expand her growth to eventually earn her entrance into the distinguished member of the Chicago area entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.

In addition the Ultimo name, Joan Weinstein was respected around the world in fashion. Eventually retiring after 30 years, she kept a keen eye in fashion & went on to provide support & guidance for IKRAM, a high fashion Chicago designer boutique opened by a former salesperson (Ikram Goldman) from Ultimo whose fame continues to grow thanks in part to a well known client named Michelle Obama.

Joan was a wonderful mentor for many as I, along with others looked to her success when I opened my own boutique, Bottega Glaseia, on Oak Street years later. Joan was also a great interview when I had the pleasure of talking to her one-on-one in her Astor Street apartment for CS (Chicago Social) where I was the Fashion Editor. She will be missed but remembered by all fashionista's in Chicago & other cities who purchased clothing from one of the best in retailing.

Well-dressed Men

Yes, I admit that, sometimes, I forget about all the well-dressed guys walking around on the streets of Chicago. At one point in time, a well-dressed man's signature was a suit & tie. Not true in the age of being an individual. I had so much fun capturing all the different styles that men are creating including the dandy look with bow ties and vests, double-breasted suits for guys that have added some extra calories and wild, wild hair. From cab drivers to anchor men to men on billboards, their styles are so diverse. I couldn't think of presenting guys with style without including one of our men of the military whom we all salute & give thanks. I guess men are finally stepping up to the plate to re-capture their roles as the peacocks of the jungle.

Diane von Furstenberg Resort/Spring 2010 at Neiman's Chicago

A large crowd arrived at Neiman's on Michigan Avenue lat week to meet Diane von Furstenberg, the queen of the "Wrap Dress," and to see her latest collection for Resort/Spring 2010.  She continues to charm her followers after first introducing her famous wrap dress decades ago.    Her new collection was inspired by Rio (maybe she had an inside tract to the 2016 Olympics) that included 40/50's style bathing suits, prints, neon brights and lengths that covered minis to cocktail length.  I loved the one-shouldered dresses and the black and white jumpsuit.  DVF told the crowd that she likes to make women feel confident and she sees her clothes as friends for your closet.  Yes, they are very sexy, wearable and empowering.  And, did I mention that we all received a canvas "Proud to be Woman" DVF bag?  It really was a special night!
