Segares to sign with Cypriot club
Left back Gonzalo Segares is close to signing a deal with Cypriot team Apollon FC. The two sides have reportedly agreed to terms with the 27-year-old Segares needing only to complete a physical for the deal to become official.
"I talked to his agent and I talked to Gonzalo and I think they're pretty close to an agreement with Apollon," Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas said. "What Gonzalo has told me is that they've agreed to everything and basically it's just a matter of going through and passing a physical. So if he doesn't come in 10 kilos overweight there won't be an issue with him signing. Everything's been agreed to."
Apollon currently sits in 4th place in the Cypriot first division, two points behind league leaders APOEL. The Costa Rican Segares will be joining Ghanian striker Junior Agogo at Apollon. Agogo played in one game with the Fire in 2000 before being traded to the Colorado Rapids for the remainder of his first MLS season.
The Cypriot first division is currently ranked 23rd amongst European leagues by UEFA. Given that ranking, I'm guessing the price Apollon offered Segares was right, considering the league won't offer better quality than MLS.
One potential replacement for Segares at left back is Krzysztof Krol. The Fire has reportedly made an offer to acquire the 23-year-old Krol on loan from Jagiellonia Bialystok of the Polish first division.

I'm curious to find out if the players union has made any progress with MLS on new collective agreement and players salaries for 2010. Their deadline is Jan 31, 2010.

Guess he has gone to get some good money, Cyprus pays very well, i think their tax is 5% or less so he'll be bringing in the euro's. Good luck to him

Do we know for how long? If its only for the next 6 months, not likely, he could come back for a significant raise if the CBA gets figured out. But Cyprus cant be a step up from Chicago.
