Yesterday was a huge day for soccer fans around the world as eight more teams secured their spot in South Africa for next year's World Cup.

The U.S. and Mexico each used a big-time win to ensure their qualification, with Mexico getting a goal from Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco in their 4-1 defeat of El Salvador at Estadio Azteca and the U.S. narrowly escaping Honduras with a thrilling 3-2 victory. The U.S. and Mexico joined Germany, Italy, Denmark, Serbia, the Ivory Coast, and Chile in booking their place in the finals yesterday.

Costa Rica moved into the third -- and final -- qualification spot in CONCACAF with their 4-0 thrashing of Trinidad & Tobago last night. The Costa Ricans, who play at RFK Stadium against the U.S. Wednesday night, are now one point ahead of Honduras (who travel to El Salvador for Wednesday night's final qualifier) in the CONCACAF standings.

There was also some MLS news that went down last night, as Columbus clinched first place in the East with a 1-0 win at New England and Chivas USA clinched a playoff berth with their 2-0 home win over Kansas City.

Chivas USA is the fourth team -- and third from the Western Conference -- to secure their qualification to the playoffs. There are now only four playoff spots left.

Temo(Donna) Blanco plays 78 minutes for Mexico, but hasn't been able to play for the Fire in three weeks. Anybody else fed up with this guy, besides me?

Wtf?seriously?you honestly think Blanco has say if he is going to play or not? I'm tired of posters on blog that post buzz comments. Ps. Your strawberry protein shake is ready.

I don't quite get the Blanco bashing on this one. I think it was more of a coincidence that the injury return timetable happened to fall during the Fire's off week. That being said, Mexico was in a must win situation for WC qualifying and really needed Blanco out there since it seems that their turnaround during qualifying happened to coincide with Blanco's return to the team.

Is it any coincidence that Blanco is playing better with El Tri while playing with 2 forwards in front of him? Is Hamlett even paying attention to this?
