Fire sign Costa Rican Defender David Myrie

With the September 15th roster freeze deadline rapidly approaching, many of us had been wondering what the Fire was planning to do with the roster spot left vacant by the departure of Bakary Soumare.  Would the Fire fill it?  Would they stand pat?  Well, we got our question answered late last night, when the Fire announced that they had signed 21-year-old defender David Myrie.

"David is a young player with a lot of potential," said Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas. "We are pleased to add him to our roster as the team continues to work toward bringing the MLS Cup to Chicago this season."

Myrie, formerly of the Costa Rican side Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, will be eligible to take the field for the Fire once his International Transfer Certificate goes through.  The 6'1" Myrie will be counted as an international on the Fire's senior roster and should help fill the gap in defense created by Soumare's departure and the injuries to Gonzalo Segares, Tim Ward and Daniel Woolard.

I'll try and get more on the signing at practice today, but I'm sure a lot of you are feeling relieved that the Fire went out and filled the empty roster spot -- though it certainly did take them long enough...

I guess some news is better than no news. I was really hoping for someone proven and ready to play right away and help for a push to the playoffs. Instead we get somewhat of a project.

I hope I am wrong.

Anyone actually know anything about this guy? How'd he do over in his old league and club? Starter? Benchwarmer? Contributed or was he just there? Any good?

I'm hoping he's another Marco Pappa.

That said, think the Fire will be able to figure out his visa situation in order to get him in country?
