Around the Minors- June 6th

Matt Swain

Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

AAA Iowa Cubs- L 10-4

Player(s) of the Game:
CF Sam Fuld- 2-5, HR, RBI, R

  • Chad Tracy went yard and batted in 3 runs, continuing his Pacific League dominance. Since his demotion, he's at .373/.409/.566 with 3 HRs and 7 2Bs in his 24 games. Looks like he'll get another shot at the Cubs roster this year, and with good reason. Heck, he's probably better than Aramis Ramirez, and his lefty bat would be fairly welcome. It's only a matter of roster space before he finds his way back up, and the next injury or trade may be his opening.
AA Tennessee Smokies- L 8-6

Player(s) of the Game:
RF Matt Spencer- 3-4, 3B, 2 RBI

  • I really like what Spencer brings to the system, a big lefty power bat who's been consistently productive for about 2 straight years now. He's up to .314/.373/.525 in AA now and probably deserves a promotion. It probably won't come soon though, with Fuld, Jason Dubois, Brad Snyder, James Adduci and Bryan LaHair soaking up most of the innings in the Iowa outfield. Still a name to keep an eye out for, he could get a look at first base in the post-Derrek Lee era to come, and could be a similar hitter to the Pirates' Garrett Jones.

A+ Daytona Cubs- W 6-2

Player(s) of the Game:
CF Brett Jackson- 2-4, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB

  • Jackson's awesome season has kind of evaporated amidst a recent slump and been replaced by a solid one. His strikeouts spiked during the rough stretch, and he just seems to have not been seeing the ball well. .274/.394/.391 may not impress you that much, but it's still very good considering his league, where the average hitter has been at .255/.324/.368.

A Peoria Chiefs- W 8-5

Player(s) of the Game:
LF DJ Fitzgerald- 2-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI

  • Trey McNutt gave up 4 runs in his 2 innings, but struck out 4 and walked just 1, and only 1 of his runs was earned. It's unbelievable how well he's pitched this year, and his 1.81 ERA is sparkling. He should destroy the Florida State League too in an even more friendly pitching environment. As of now, probably a top 5 prospect in the Cubs system.
