Around the Minors- May 9th

Matt Swain

Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

AAA Iowa Cubs- W 6-1

Player(s) of the Game:
DH Marquez Smith- 3-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI

  • Darwin Barney continues to hit out of his mind, and after 3 more hits today he's now 18 of his last 38, but still with just 3 2Bs, 1 3B, and 2 BBs over that span. At 24, what you see is what you get; he'll likely carve out a career as a singles hitter and defensive specialist.

  • Smith and James Adduci were both 3-4, hopefully signs of turn-arounds for two guys who have had a lot of struggles this year.

  • Blake Parker completed his 4th consecutive appearance (6.1 IP) without a walk, though his strikeouts are down during that span. He needs to find that balance before he'll be able to handle a bullpen job with the Cubs.
AA Tennessee Smokies- Off day

A+ Daytona Cubs- Off day

A Peoria Chiefs- L 15-6

Player(s) of the Game:
3B Greg Rohan- 1-3, 2 BB, 2 R

  • Su-Min Jung had a rough outing, giving up 6 ER in 4 IP. Nick Devlin, broadcaster for the Burlington Bees in the Midwest League and Cubs fan tweeted this about it, which captures my thoughts exactly:

"With a high BB/low K combo, that 0.78 ERA was not long for this world. RT @peoriachiefs Kane County pounding Su-Min Jung in the 4th."

  • Hak-Ju Lee's struggles at the plate continue, and after an 0-4 day he's down to .234/.308/.318. He's an exciting dude with game-changing speed and excellent range, but he's gotta hit first. His plate discipline has still looked good, and the hits should come.

  • In the middle of the order, Greg Rohan continues to have a pretty productive year and Justin Bour is getting on-base like a machine, but needs to hit some home runs. Justin- I know you read this. You're a big boy. Swing for the fences. First basemen with 0 HRs aren't useful. And yes, I know you don't actually read this.
