Around the Minors- May 8th

Matt Swain

Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

AAA Iowa Cubs- L 4-2

Player(s) of the Game:
CF Sam Fuld- 2-3, 2 BB, 2B, R, RBI

  • Wow, Sam Fuld. After being injured early, he's come back with a vengeance, and today's performance raised his season line to .297/.460/.405. He's got 11 BBs compared to just 2 Ks (!) in his first 37 at-bats. Obviously we're looking at an extremely small sample size here, but it's hard not to be impressed by that plate discipline. Unfortunately for Fuld, his only current hope for a big league job is an injury to an OF or the club deciding to get Tyler Colvin more regular playing time.

  • Casey Coleman gave up another home run today, his 3rd of the season, putting him on pace to eclipse his 8 last season. His control has improved a lot so far though, which kind of evens him out in the eyes of FIP.

AA Tennessee Smokies- W 6-5 in 10

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Austin Bibens-Dirkx- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 Ks
3B Russell Canzler- 2-3, 2 BB, HR, 2 RBI

  • File Ryan Buchter in the category of guys who could be excellent if they learn to throw more strikes. I've heard glowing reports of his stuff, and his strikeout numbers are top-notch, but his walk totals are entirely too high. He picked up the win Saturday in relief with two solid innings of scoreless ball.

  • Robinson Chirinos is mired in an 0-11 slump, and his averages are down to .318/.386/.591.
A+ Daytona Cubs- W 4-1

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Chris Archer- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

  • Archer's outing was very encouraging, and his overall season stats are starting to round into shape. It's good to see him piling up strikeouts while keeping the walks down, and it makes me feel better about ranking him in the top 15 in my top 30 prospects.

  • Brett Jackson now has 22 BBs in 29 games, and a .440 on-base percentage. He could be in Chicago by next season, and if he's not starting in the outfield by 2012, something went wrong.

  • It's good to see most of last year's Peoria team back together now that Flaherty and Ridling have re-joined the team. That team was awesome, and I expect to see them put together a nice little run over the next couple weeks.
A Peoria Chiefs- L 5-0

Player(s) of the Game:
LF D.J. Fitzgerald- 3-4

  • Not a ton of good performances in this clunker by Peoria. One notable development is Larry Suarez, a hard-throwing 20-year-old with a history of command problems. He's looked really good in that department so far this year, with just 2 walks in his 9.1 innings of work, and 10 Ks. If he can keep pounding the strike zone, he could have an excellent future in the bullpen.
