Around the Minors- May 6th

AAA Iowa Cubs- L 1-2

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Jay Jackson- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

  • Jay Jackson has probably been the luckiest pitcher in the system so far. .179 BABIP? 5 HRs and only 9 ERs? 92% strand rate? I take that back. Jay Jackson has been one of the luckiest pitchers in the minor leagues. His ERA should be closer to 5 than 2.31.

  • Darwin Barney has been out of his mind lately, with 6 multi-hit games in a row now after going 2-4 today. He's now hitting over .300, though he still has shown very little patience or power. He should find a major league job for a number of years, though it's unlikely it will be as anything but a backup.

AA Tennessee Smokies- W 5-0L 8-2

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Andrew Cashner- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
RF Matt Spencer- 3-5, BB, R, HR, 2 RBI

  • With today's 8 Ks, Cashner has already surpassed his 2009 strikeout total with Tennessee, and it took him 22 less innings this time around. I don't need to tell you how good he's been this year, and there's nothing to indicate that the performance isn't for real. The scouting reports are excellent, the strikeout rate is excellent, the walk rate is acceptable, the groundball rate is good, and his FIP (2.53) is actually lower than his ERA (2.75).

  • Starlin Castro: .376/.421/.569.

A+ Daytona Cubs- L 1-4

Player(s) of the Game:
CF Brett Jackson- 2-4, R

  • Josh Vitters with another walk. He's already got 8 this season, and the BB% is up from 2.5% to 6.7%. Good work Josh, it's a big step in the right direction.

  • Rafael Dolis continues to not give up many runs, but his peripheral stats continue to be not so good. His walk rate is still too high, and his strikeout rate is actually lower than it was last year. The one thing he is doing well is keeping the ball on the ground, to the tune of a 70% groundball rate this year. I'm not sold on this kid as a starter, and think a short relief role where his fastball would play up might be a better option.

A Peoria Chiefs- L 11-4

Player(s) of the Game:
P Jeffry Antigua- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
