Around the Minors- April 29th

Matt Swain

Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

Brought to you by my third consecutive 4:30 AM+ night of studying and fueled by a can of Pibb Xtra, here is today's abbreviated ATM:

AAA Iowa Cubs- L 7-11

Player(s) of the Game:
RF Brad Snyder- 3-4, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, R

AA Tennnessee Smokies- L 3-4

Player(s) of the Game:
C Robinson Chirinos- 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, R

A+ Daytona Cubs- L 3-4

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Brooks Raley- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
RF Kyler Burke- 3-4, 2B, RBI

A Peoria Chiefs- W 8-7

Player(s) of the Game:
1B Justin Bour- 3-4, BB, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI

General Notes

  • The Cubs have four catchers in the upper minors:

    Welington Castillo- .270/.357/.676
    Chris Robinson- .250/.382/.429
    Robinson Chirinos- .361/.414/.754
    Steve Clevenger- .333/.400/.400

That's four guys, and four 800+ OPS's (and two 1000+'s). Good luck figuring out who is next on the list to get to the Cubs. It's a luxury I guess, but catcher is probably the position the Cubs need the least help at over the next 3-4 years with Soto pretty well established there.

  • Josh Vitters hit a home run, which I suppose is news-worthy. He hasn't been very good this year, but hasn't been terrible either. I think most people (including myself) are just waiting for him to catch fire so they can watch the show.

  • Hak-Ju Lee had a nice game for Peoria, going 2-4 with a BB and a SB, and Kyler Burke had one of his best games of the season. I should call guys out more often for underachieving. (I'm looking at you now, Ryan Flaherty)
