Around the Minors- April 27th

Matt Swain

Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

Today's video of the day is a premature celebration in the Adriatic League final, leading to an incredible and hilarious ending. I don't know about you, but I'm just excited the season is over so we can get start talking AL hot stove and write up some mock drafts.

AAA Iowa Cubs- W 4-3, W 4-2

Player(s) of the Game(s):
3B Marquez Smith- 2-4, 2 2Bs, RBI
SP Thomas Diamond- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

  • Darwin Barney wins the "Season Line That Looks More Ridiculous Every Day" Award with his .222/.250/.250 effort. I'm starting to think I was duped by his bat. Bravo to MB21, who was all over it in the comments here a month or two ago.

  • Thomas Diamond has been really good so far this year, and after today's performance has a 1.71 ERA. He's one of those guys who you pick up basically for free and if you get anything out of him at all it's a win. And he looks like he could hold his own as a spot-starter this year if there's ever a need, which means the Cubs may have gotten something out of him. Score.

AA Tennessee Smokies- L 4-5

Player(s) of the Game:
SS Starlin Castro- 3-5, 2B, RBI

  • After a two level jump from Peoria and a very slow start to the 2009 season, it probably would have been unreasonable to expect Ryan Flaherty to succeed right away. He seems to be adjusting though, and had a nice night with 2 walks and a double in 4 plate appearances. He's a hard working, coach's son type of guy who I think will figure it out and find his way to the major leagues.

  • Starlin broke out of his 0-11 slump with another multi-hit performance. Those are quickly becoming his specialty. The best part of his season has been the abundance of extra base hits, which he's piled up (12 in 18 games). Hopefully that indicates he has some power on the way as his frame fills out.

A+ Daytona Cubs- W 3-1

Player(s) of the Game:
DH Rebel Ridling- 1-3, HR, RBI, R
1B Matt Spencer- 1-3, HR, RBI, R

  • Rebel Ridling carries so much weight in the Cubs organization that if someone is in his way, the team releases them to please Rebel. Ryne White was the casualty, and the first baseman acquired in the Aaron Heilman trade just wasn't that good of a hitter. It seems like an early axe, but he really had very little potential as a prospect.

  • This was a very boring game. Many of the Daytona games are. I will be happy to see a lot of these guys leave the Florida State League behind them and move on to Tennessee, where everything just seems more exciting in the box score.

A Peoria Chiefs- W 5-4

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Trey McNutt- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K

  • Hard throwing Venezuelan Larry Suarez finally made it to full-season ball after playing a few seasons in the Cubs organization, and it has been a minor miracle that he hasn't walked anyone yet in 4 innings after allowing 24 free passes in 30 innings last year.

  • Love me some Trey McNutt. He'll be a top 15 prospect in my next prospect rankings on the back of his mid-90's fastball. How did we get him in the 32nd round again?
