Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

Sorry for missing ATM yesterday, had some illness and some internet problems.

AAA Iowa Cubs- W 7-4 in 11

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Casey Coleman- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 Ks

  • Nice outing from Coleman, who continues to not give up many hits or home runs, despite a high number of balls being put in play. Time will tell if that's a skill or just dumb luck.

  • Jason Dubois hit his 4th home run of the season, bringing his season line to an interesting .250/.276/.679. Gotta love early season stats.

  • Speaking of early season stat lines, Darwin Barney went 2-6 Friday, bringing his season totals to .300/.317/.300. It's something of a hyperbolic display of his one dimensional offensive skill-set. He'll hit for some average, but he doesn't bring anything else to the table. He hits nothing but singles and doesn't take walks, which will prevent him from ever being considered for a starting role.

AA Tennessee Smokies- L 7-11

Player(s) of the Game:
CF Tony Campana- 3-6, 2B, 3B, RBI, 2 Rs

  • Starlin Castro was 2-5 with a 2B, but also struck out 3 times. That's slightly concerning, as his BB/K ratio is now 1/7 on the season, but in the end when a guy hits like he has (and is) at 20 years old in AA, you tend to be forgiving of that kind of thing.

  • Though he's not hitting as regularly as he perhaps should be, Steve Clevenger has roared out of the gate, and was 2-4 with a BB. It's a shame the Cubs organization has 4 similarly talented catchers (Welington Castillo, Clevenger, Robinson Chirinos, and Chris Robinson), because it's created a real logjam at the upper levels.

A+ Daytona Cubs- L 8-4

Player(s) of the Game:
3B Marwin Gonzalez- 3-4, 2 RBIs

  • Josh Vitters was 2-4 with a SB, DJ LeMahieu was 2-5 with an RBI, and Brett Jackson was  2-5. Unfortunately for the D-Cubs it was singles parade, and the only one of the team's 11 hits that went for extra bases was a double off the bat of Junior Lake. He's an immensely talented kid, but I would be shocked if he amounted to anything.

  • Ryan Searle threw 5 innings and allowed 3 ERs, striking out 2 and walking 1. I just don't see what everyone else sees in the kid. Sure he's young and has a nice two-seamer, but it's hard for me to see him ever being more than a marginal prospect.
A Peoria Chiefs- W 7-4

Player(s) of the Game:
SP Trey McNutt- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 Ks

  • Very encouraging start to the season for McNutt, a 32nd round pick in 2009 who has very good stuff built around a mid-90's fastball. He's an exciting prospect making a lot of ground who will probably be among the top 15 prospects when I evaluate the system again next month.

  • The speedsters were at it, with Hak-Ju Lee going 2-4 with a SB and 2 Rs from the leadoff spot, and Jose Valdez following with a 3-5 with a SB and 2 Rs of his own from the 2 hole. They miight be the least powerful team in the league, but with Lee, Valdez, and Logan Watkins, if you catch a Peoria game you're almost guaranteed to see some nice baserunning.
