Around the Minors- April 13th

Illinois engineering student, way too emotionally invested in the Cubs.

Today's ATM is brought to you by neighbor Kalli Burns, who is dressed as a gorilla.

AAA Iowa Cubs-
L 6-7

  • The good news for Darwin Barney? His 3-5 day in the leadoff spot brings him to a .308 batting average on the season. The bad news? His overall line now is .308/.308/.308. That's right, no walks or extra base hits, which is kind of his skillset in a nutshell.

  • Bobby Scales isn't good enough to warrant a major league roster spot, but he sure is a professional hitter. 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs bring him to a .462/.579/.692 on the young season.

  • Good outing from Jeff Stevens, who threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with 5 Ks, 2 BBs and 1 H. Control is his main problem, but I do enjoy watching him throw that curveball.
AA Tennessee Smokies- off day

A+ Daytona Cubs- L 2-4

  • Rafael Dolis got saddled with the loss due to an error by Josh Vitters (his 3rd already, there is no way he stays at 3rd base). But he had some major control problems, giving out 4 free passes in his 4 innings. Not a good sign.

  • As long as Brett Jackson keeps taking walks, he'll keep getting mentioned, and his 1-3 day with a double was highlighted (in my eyes) by his 7th walk of the year. He's playing the role of leadoff man well right now. The last question in my mind is can he show power and patience simultaneously? If so he's a star. If not, he's still a very good player, but he'll have to play Drew Stubbs and make a decision which route to go.

  • Josh Vitters took a walk. No, seriously.
A Peoria Chiefs- W 1-0

  • Peoria managed to avoid the Cubs system sweep behind Matt Cerda and his 3-3 with a BB day. He scored the only run while pushing his OBP back above the .500 mark. Finally healthy, he's the early favorite for breakout player of the year.

  • Jose Valdez just quietly does his thing, and went 1-3 tonight with his 5th stolen base of the season. His thing isn't terribly valuable, but he plays his role well, giving him at least some prospect status.
