The Flames were led by Zavion Neely's (left) 19 points. While I wasn't able to attend the game, the box score reveals some good trends.

In the exhibition game against Lewis Neely looked like one of the best players on the court. Against UIS he took 13 shots and scored 19 points. That's the type of secondary scoring option the Flames need alongside Robo Kreps, who went for 16 points.

As a team the Flames outrebounded the Prairie Stars 46-40. K.C. Robbins rebounded from a poor exhibition game to go for 13 rebounds and 12 points. The situation with Robbins and Louis Green reminds me quite a bit of Northwestern's situation last season with Luka Mirkovic and Kyle Rowley. At least one will show up to play each night and that'll give UIC a good lift.

The 49.2 percent effective field goal percentage is still a little lower than what the Flames need to be competitive this season, but it's a start.

Also continuing a disturbing trend, Jeremy Buttell and Kris Harris were each suspended for the game against UIS for violating team rules. UIC's official recap.

Chicago State preview after the jump.
Chicago State (1-0) at Iowa State (1-0)
Where: J. Hilton Coliseum, Ames, IA
When: 6 p.m. CT
Game Notes: Iowa State
Summary: Chicago State heads to Ames, IA to take on the Cyclones. Iowa State got over being rejected by hometown top recruit Harrison Barnes by easily dispatching Idaho State 88-68 on Friday. The Cyclones feature Craig Brackins. Brackins is a powerful force inside. Against Idaho State he scored 17 points in 28 minutes. Iowa State's first game was played at a lightning fast pace, so expect its game against the Cougars to be played at much the same rate. In the Idaho State game Iowa State went on a big run at the end of the first half, the Cougars can't suffer a similar fate if they want to pull the upset.
3 Keys for Chicago State: Carl Montgomery has to contain Brackins, Find good opportunities to score, Stay in it early
