Pistons and Gordon reach deal "in principle"

user-pic
Breaking: Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

The Detroit Pistons have reached agreement with free-agent guard Ben Gordon(notes) on a five-year contract worth around $55 million, a source with knowledge of the talks told Yahoo! Sports Wednesday evening.

It's time to face it - he's gone, and we were outbid.

Seem so.

It's still hard to fathom that he actually got $11 million. Last year, couldn't get even a single offer from anyone other than us. This year, he's the first signing of the entire league and gets $11 million. Will take a while to comprehend, that.

Detroit just overpaid, BTW. Although what the hell the Bulls do now, I have no idea.

Crestfallen as I am, how set in the stone are these "in principle" agreements? Can any of us naive fans dream that the Bulls could still outbid the Pistons before July 8?

That's a pipe dream, I feel. It COULD change, but it almost never does. Ben went to Detroit, got an offer, asked Chicago to counter it, and they wouldn't match it. So it looks done. To get him back, Detroit would have to renege on the deal.

Ridiculous. He doesn't even come back and check about an offer with the Bulls. Oh well, no way we'd have offered $11 mil a year. Best of luck to BG---very sad day.

It was reported - can't remember exactly where, may have been Chris Broussard - that Gordon came back to the Bulls and asked if they would match the Pistons offer. The answer would appear to have been no.

And to be honest, neither would I. What we do now, I'm not sure, but the 2010 bandwagon looks to be up and running.

What sucks is that if we were going to slightly overpay any of our recent FAs, it would definitely be Gordon and not Hinrich or Deng... or Chandler

Mark Deeks said:

Yep. The Bulls have mismanaged the cap in recent years. Oh well, intercourse all that now; we have a 2010 plan. That, the youngsters, hopefully a blockbuster trade for a big, and scouting free agency bargains. That's the new plan.

We're not in a bad position, really.

Why would anyone want to sign with the Bulls after how they treated this guy? And I don't forsee a stellar year coming up to draw too much intrest anyway. Hey come play for us we always get high draft picks, underpay talent, overpay character, and let the next door neighbor coach the team... what a joke!

Sorry im kinda upset right now.

Money talks, and it'll talk next year as well. Detroit signed Rip to an extension under the pretense that Billups was staying, then traded him two weeks later. Didn't stop Gordon from being the first FA signed this summer.

I hope your right. This year is going to suck for me I go see the bulls play in detroit (im in toledo ohio) both games every year and this will hurt!

Kind of sad, but unsurprising. I think 5/55 is more than we were willing to pay unless Gordon would have considered a 6/60 instead.

Here's to hoping things workout in the future.

Glad to see him gone. He was a selfish player and gave up just as many points on the defensive end as he scored on the offensive end. At times, he was exciting to watch, but usually he just made me cringe.

He's not nearly as selfish as Chicago fans.
