Imperial Stout Tasting: Round 2

Matt Tunnell

Frisbee player, beer lover

This is only the second stout tasting but we've already deviated from the plan set out in Jeff's initial post.  These two stouts were not on the original list; in fact they were little more than a glimmer in my eye when this project was first conceived.  Friend-of-the-blog Josh scored New England Brewing's Imperial Stout Trooper from a New England buddy.  Back when I mentioned the Imperial Stout Trooper in my list of beers for a lonely Valentine's day I didn't imagine that I'd get to try it.  However, it's good that I did now, since this is the last year that Imperial Stout Trooper was available with its distinctive label.  Thanks to a cease and desist letter from Lucasfilm new artwork will grace future releases.
The Hunahpu's Imperial Stout, from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, was graciously provided by my uncle.  This beer was only released at the brewery in Tampa, but it stuck around for several weeks afterwards, so he was able to score some bottles without waiting in any long lines.  Hunahpu's is an imperial stout (they sell the base beer as Marshall Zhukov's) aged on Peruvian cocoa nibs, Madagascar Vanilla, cinnamon, and ancho and pasilla chiles.  I love Mexican food and once I'd read about Hunahpu's I had to have it.
A final procedural note: Due to the obvious difference between these stouts and the impromptu nature of this tasting, we dispensed with blind tasting and just focused on enjoying the beer with open minds.
