Bears and Rams in happier times

CURRENT SCORE: Bears 17 Rams 9

Welcome to Misery Loves Company, formerly known as Bears Game Day.  It's a place for Bears fans to vent frustration and tear into the Bears as they bumble their way to another underwhelming season.  It's like AA only with less steps and more drinking.

My name is Mike Burzawa and I'm a Bears-aholic.  Sorry, but my Bears Kool Aide ran out and all I've got left is the hard stuff.

I feel like I keep repeating myself every week, but I hope that maybe we pick up a few new readers or a few of the previous visitors have learned to read.  Fine, shoot me - I'm a little bitter.  OK, a lot bitter.

The way this works is that I'll be providing live play by play with a running commentary on the action as it unfolds in the Comments section.  The current score will be up there and I'll be posting a scoring summary below so you can catch up if you're a late-comer.  If you want to join the discussion, sign up and chime in.

The 1-10 Rams head to Soldier Field for a matchup with our disappointing 4-7 Bears.  If the Bears manage to lose and they should just carpet bomb Soldier Field and call the 50+ thousand spectators martyrs to the cause of re-building this once-proud franchise.

Check back in before kickoff for inactives, updates and all you need to help you stomach the Bears and Rams.

SCORING SUMMARY

Bears 7, Rams 0
Bears cover 85 yards in just over 2 minutes thanks to a 48 yard bomb from Cutler to Hester and a pass interference on the Rams in the end zone on another long attempt.  Matt Forte takes the 1-yard plunge to put the Bears up with a rare first quarter TD.

Bears 10, Rams 0
Big Play Jay is out as Cutler hits Bennett on a slant that goes for 71 yards.  Bears stall in the Red Zone as Hester can't get both feet down.  Robbie Gould hits a 27 yard chip shot to put the Bears up 10.

Rams 3, Bears 10
Bears try a fake FG that is sniffed out.  Seems to wake up the Rams.  They march on Steven Jackson's back but stall inside the 5 to settle for a short FG.

Rams 6, Bears 10
Rams pick up another 3 points on a 48-yard FG thanks to good field position and a 15 yard face mask on Peanut Tillman.

Bears 17, Rams 6
Bears get off the bus running on this drive.  Sorry, I couldn't help myself.  Forte, Kahlil Bell and some Ram penalties pave the way for a Cutler 3-yard pass to Earl Bennett for a TD.   The drive covers 76 yards and over 7 minutes of clock.

Rams 9, Bears 17

Great field position on a punt return sets up this Josh Brown 50 yard field goal.  Rams keep it to a 1-score game with about 10 minutes left in the 4th.

It is truly a beautiful day in Chicago - maybe one of a few remaining for a while - I suppose the "real" Bear fans are out today - whatever that means. Perhaps remaining positive is more important than anything now. I think I will begin geriatric counseling soon.

Dick Stockton and Trent Green will be at the controls over at Fox. Didn't Trent play for the Rams?

KPOM said:

Don't the Bears have a Dick Stockton curse or something like that? At least they aren't playing on national TV today.

Mike Burzawa said:

Hope the Bears D can get it together w/o Briggs.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears will receive. Short kickoff taken by Rashied Davis out to the 50.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte stipped on his second carry. Here we go again. Damn!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Rams will take over at their own 42. Kyle Boller is starting for the Rams in place on an injured Bulger. Doesn't matter - it's all about stopping Steven Jackson. Bears have actually been decent stopping opposing running. A lone bright spot for the Bears? 3rd and 9 for the Rams and hey look, Wale Ogunleye with a sack! Wale is a stud when he plays against backup tackles.

jack lacan said:

I think the Bears are the better team today and will win. It's not much, but it's a pre-holiday lift for a change.

Hester lets the punt bounce and it's downed at the 10. Forte's fumble - net loss of 40+ yards in field position. Are we still getting off the bus running, Lovie? Better question - should we?

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I think Lovie meant to say "Let's get off the bus and start running away from Soldier Field as fast as we can..."

TheFoss1957 said:

user-pic

Hey Mike! Well this is truly a no win game for the beleaguered Bears' coaching staff... A win means you've beaten one of the two most inept teams of the NFL over the past 3 years...a Loss and the Hot Seat becomes an Electric Chair!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Let's kick off with the obligatory "We can still finish 9-7..."

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler with a nice play action fake and hits Hester for a 48 yard gain. Hester took that away in double coverage. WOW! Hey look - the other Devin (Aromashudu) is in and promptly drops a bubble screen. Bears continue with the aerial assault. Johnny Knox interfered with in the end zone. Pass interference sets up the Bears with a first and goal.

TheFoss1957 said:

user-pic

No push at all from the OL in Goal line...pathetic

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte stuffed on both first and second down at the goal line. Bears line is getting no push. Third time is a charm. Forte is in for 6! Bears take an early lead.

dr401k said:

user-pic

Not sure is this is fair, but I blame Ron Turner and his "system" for Forte's futility this year.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

All's fair in ripping the Bears this season. Turner has been running the same plays since the 90's.

TheFoss1957 said:

user-pic

Forte freelances to an unplanned hole for the TD...there was no hole where RT drew it up!

And as far as the Offense to move the ball down to the red zone...a force off ineffective play action where Hester makes a play against a Double team...and a "chuck and duck" underthrow for a PI! THat isn't going to be reliable all game long! I am disgusted DESPITE the early TD.

Donnie Avery with an end around to pick up 15. Alex Brown loses contain. This is a recurring theme. Come on AB!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears show blitz and Boller overshoots Avery on 3rd and 5. Hester back to receive this punt. Hester takes the fair catch at the 6. Whatever happened to just letting it go if it's inside the 10. We'll see if Cutler can engineer another long drive.

dr401k said:

user-pic

My "spidey sense" tells me that Hester will return a punt for a TD today.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Kahlil Bell getting a look. He stumbles out of the gate. The first Soldier Field turf reference!

KPOM said:

Credit Bono and the "Claw" with the tackle.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears with a 3rd and 8 coming up deep in their own end. Cutler hits Bennett on a slant and Bennett takes off! Bennett is caught from behind and fumbles - but it goes out of bounds so Bears will keep possession. The plays goes for 71 yards. Big Play Jay today! Bears take a time out to pinch themselves.

Re: Re-building --- the Rams have a longer way to go than the Bears.
Cutler looks like he's got a notion today.

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears at the 20 and JC hits Knox inside the 10 for a first down. Nice play by Jay rolling right. 1st and goal. Bell stays in the game and all the Forte fantasy owners are cringing. He goes nowhere. This Greg Olsen fantasy owner is hoping for an Olsen TD. Cutler misses Bennett on what could have been interference. 3rd and goal from the 9. Hester with a nifty grab for a TD! Not sure if he got both feet in. Could the Rams challenge? You bet. No need. Refs overrule themselves before the challenge. Robbie Gould on to kick the chip shot. Robbie Red Zone is good! Bears up 10-0.

jack lacan said:

Why do we seem to know what's going on as televiewers and Lovie seems on delay?

Jack Lacan

TheFoss1957 said:

Robbie Gould gets his Right ankle stepped on!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Robbie Gould shaken up covering the kickoff. Turf monster got him. Damn turf! Rams in great field position and into Bear territory.

TheFoss1957 said:

user-pic

It should be mentioned...our Linebacking corps today is Roach/Hillenmeyer/Jamar Williams! Not an impressive set.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Jackson picks up a short 3rd down. Boller goes deep but can't hit Avery. Bears have it covered. Kevin Payne with a diving deflection. Rams creeping forward behind S-Jack. Getting close to FG range. 3rd and 4 from the 34. Boller is sacked by Izzy! Knocks them out of FG range. Rams will punt a pooch punt that is downed at the 1. Nice play. 99 yards for JC and the offense.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte shows a burst up the middle to get some breathing room as the first quarter comes to a close with the Bears up 10-zip.

dr401k said:

user-pic

I wish I could give Ron Turner a head slap.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

2nd quarter opens with another Forte run. 3rd and 2. WOW - Washington up 10-0 on the Saints. Upset alert. Bears try to run for the first and it's blown up for a loss. Maynard on to punt.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Maynard has to burn a timeout because they don't have enough players on the field. That's 100% coaching. No excuse for that crap.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Flag down on the punt is on the Rams for illegal block in the back. That will at least move them out of Bears territory. Boller nearly picked off. Nice D by Jamar Williams. Wale just whiffed on a sack. Straight up missed the tackle. BAD!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Rams down another punt inside the 2 yard line. Long way to go seems like it's becoming a theme for the Bears.

dr401k said:

user-pic

I should give myself a head slap for predicting a Hester punt return for a TD. Will he even return a punt?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Um, no.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler's pass to Olsen off his hands and nearly picked off. Forte dives forward to pick up about 3 yards. 3rd and 7. Cutler's pass to Knox is broken up. Maynard on to punt. Can we please get the requisite number of players on the field? Bad boot by Maynard. Rams will start in Bears territory.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

S-Jack is surrounded and loses 2 yards. Boller hits Amendola on an out but it looks like there was a hold on the Rams. Yup. AB was held. 2nd and 22. Let's go D!

dr401k said:

user-pic

That fake either means that Gould may be hurt or Lovie's cry for help (i.e., fire me).

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Boller hits on a pass play, but it's coughed up right Afalavva. Afalava takes off running and sets the Bears up inside the 20. Bowman with the strip. Nice!

Kahlil Bell in the game. Bell picks up yardage on first and second down. 3rd and 4. Cutler on the designed rollout but can't find anything. Robbie Gould on to kick. Watching the replay, that play sucked. Bears fake the field goal and try a shovel pass to Olsen but it's stopped short. Did Mannelly call for that one? First fake kick since the fake punt in Week 1 at GB. Take the points and don't get cute Bears!

jack lacan said:

user-pic

If we try tricks let's make them effective - not botched.
The comments about the Rams offense sound exactly like the ones about the Bears.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears fake FG was worse when seeing the replay. UGH! Rams pick up a first down to give themselves some breathing room. Steven Jackson can't get it going. Rams starting to get it going offensively.

ShieldsUpCaptain said:

This game is like watching two one legged men trying to win a butt kicking contest.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Is it just me or does Steven Jackson's helmet look small on his head? He's getting it going. Just over 4 minutes left in the half. Rams into Chicago territory. Avery picks up another first down for the Lambs.

jack lacan said:

user-pic

The crowd sounds like they're at a Circus Freak Show.
No.68 for Rams is an example of the show. This is an ugly football game.

ShieldsUpCaptain said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Stephen Jackson runs over 5 people including his own guys for a big gain. I'd kill for him to be a Bear.

dr401k said:

user-pic

It would be a way to cut down his production. Turner would find a way to make him mediocre a la Benson.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Rams pick up 21 yards as they march down the field. They're inside the 20. Steven Jackson bullrushing for another first down. 1st and goal. Jackson tackled inside the 5 at the 2 minute warning. Bears need to hold to a FG here.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

3rd and goal. Rams will spread it out. Boller tried to hit Jackson on a shovel pass - it's shovel not shuffle Trent! - Rams to kick the FG. 6 point swing as the Bears trickery fails and the Rams capitalize.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I'm watching the Redskins - Saints game and the weird thing is I see the Redskins - who don't precisely have great offensive personnel outside Santan Moss - call plays that'll get you two yards if it's 3rd and 2 instead of when it's 3rd and 10. Wow.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

With 1:06 to go, Bears won't sit on it. Cutler fumbles the shotgun snap and it looks like the Bears are content to just let the clock run out. Something seems to be up with Cutler. Stockton and Green talk about maybe a finger? The Bears head to halftime with a 10-3 lead.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Any more word on Gould? I don't have the game today since it isn't on in the East Coast.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Checking into it. No word. Speculation that's why they tried the fake FG.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Gould must be OK - he kicks off to open the 2nd half.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Jackson gets nothing on his first carry of the 2nd half. Here comes a 3rd and long. Bears blitz and Bollen cannot hook up with Amendola.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Hester's first punt return of the game goes for -10 yards. Remember when you didn't want to go to the bathroom during punts and kickoffs because he might do something special? Those days are GONE!

dr401k said:

user-pic

Let's see, Hester's production fell off right after Turner started coaching him. Hmm . . . .

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears need to put a drive together. Bears try an end around to Hester which goes for negative yardage. He fumbles - but covers it up - and comes up limping. That is a Ron Turner trifecta. Hester doesn't look good on the sidelines.

Bumsteer said:

user-pic

Hester doesn't look good on the field either

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Chris Williams loses battle with Chris Long and Cutler is sacked.

Colorado Bears Fan said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Williams officially sucks. At his natural position, he let's Long blow around him to sack Cutler from the blind side!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Rams show to run an end-around. They pick up 8 yards. Add 15 for a facemask and the Rams marching down to the Bears 26. Bears blow up Jackson. They are determined to not let him beat them.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Nick Roach blows up Jackson on a screen pass. 3rd and long for the Rams. Bears backup LB's making their presence known in this sequence as Jamar Williams stuff the conversion attempt. Josh Brown boots a 48 yard attempt. Rams close the gap to 4.

dr401k said:

user-pic

Back to the fake, how sad would it be if the Bears lose 12 - 10 or !3 - 10? It could happen.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Johnny Knox with an electrifying return that is nullified by a holding penalty by Adrian Peterson. Damn!

Colorado Bears Fan said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Nice return by Knox (maybe Hester should be taking notes), and of course, a holding penalty by the Bears Special Teams nullifies a great return!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ron Turner must've landed on the Run page of his playbook, as the Bears open with 2 runs. Forte with another run to rush for a first down. Frank Omi-god with a pull to open it up for Forte. And my TV is frozen. That sucks. Hester is out and will not return.

Colorado Bears Fan said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

After this season, Knox is the only WR I would bring back next season.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Horse collar tackle adds 15 yards to the latest Forte rush. Kahlil Bell in for Forte. Bears rushing the ball well. Bell rushes for another 1st down.

Last week, Seattle had little problem with the rams, and that game was in st louis. This week, duh bearssssssssss can't even properly deal with the rams, and the game is here. Heck, jackson has already outrun forte, and jackson didn't fumble, either. What does it say about duh bearsssssss having trouble AT HOME vs one of the worst nfl teams?

Just got this text from my brother-in-law: Sitting right in front of the Bears bench. Urlacher has no friends.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears offense is becoming the walking wounded. McKie, Hester and Forte are all out. Illegal hands to the face give the Bears an automatic first down. McKie back in. Bell takes off around left end to pick up 9. Bears need a TD here. FG will not cut it.

glenn said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

If the Bears lose this game the coaches should be met at Halas Hall with a pink slip. In fact with the troubles the Bears are having beating the Rams, they should be met with a pink slip. The Rams are beyond terrible and having trouble beating them is ridiculous.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte is back in as is McKie. 1st and goal from the 6. Forte takes the carry up the middle to pick up three. Bears are just running it down the Rams throats. Forte stuffed. Rams swell up and stop em to set up 3rd and goal. Bears spread it out and Cutler hits Bennett for a TD! Bears up 11 on the PAT.

Colorado Bears Fan said:
