FINAL SCORE: Bears 10 Vikings 36

Welcome to Misery Loves Company Bears Game Day.  If you're new to the site, my name is Mike Burzawa and I'm the lead blogger at Bear Goggles On and I'll be your host for the Bears vs Vikings.

The way this works is that I'll be providing live play by play with a running commentary on the action as it unfolds in the Comments section.  The current score will be up there and I'll be posting a scoring summary below so you can catch up if you're a late-comer.  If you want to join the discussion, sign up and chime in. 3 out of 4 dentists recommend it.

If you thought the season hadn't gone the way you'd hoped so far, fasten your sea because I expect it to be a bumpy ride against the Vikes.

The Vikings boast a 9-1 record and are the class of the NFC North.  The Bears' old nemesis Brett Favre has returned to the division and elevated the Vikings to elite status.  On the other side of the ball, Jared Allen has been a one-man rodeo, leading the NFC with 10.5 sacks.

If there is any good news heading into this game, it's that Purple Jesus Adrian Peterson is questionable with an ankle and an illness.  The Bears (and yours truly) think he'll play, but if he doesn't it could spare the Bears the embarrassment of ending up on another AP highlight reel.

The Beloved enter the game as 10.5 point underdogs and I've decided to embrace the idea that they're going to get smoked.  In the Gallery below, I've included some of my own propositional wagers to reflect that.  What do you think?  Hit the comments with your predictions, projections or other prop bets for the game.

Be sure to join us back here before kickoff for the latest injury news and inactives and final thoughts.  Kickoff is at 3:15 PM as the featured game on Fox.

Scoring Summary

Vikings 7, Bears zip
The Vikes march 96 yards on 13 plays.  Favre caps it off with a 15 yard pass to Harvin.  Bears actually held up through the first quarter, but let it up on the first play of the second quarter.

Bears 7, Vikings 7
Jay Cutler punches one in to Johnny Knox from 25 yards out to tie up the score.  He started off near-perfectly, hitting Olsen on a few short passes.  D Manning set it up with a great kick return.

Vikings 14, Bears 7
Brett Favre hits Chester Taylor for a 10 yard TD reception in a quick drive highlighted (or lowlighted as it were) by a long Harvin run and multiple Sydney Rice catches.  Favre is carving up the Bears D as if he's faced them before.

Vikings 17, Bears 7
Ryan Longwell hits a 52 yard field goal set up by the Johnny Knox fumble on the kick return.  Lovie burns a challenge on a play that clearly wasn't going to be overturned.

Vikings 24, Bears 7
Favre hits TE Shiancoe with a short TD pass with 17 seconds left in the half to open it up. Vikes offense looks dominant.     Set up by.. You guessed it - another Cutler INT.  This one to Jared freakin' Allen of all people.  I hate that redneck and the mullet he rode in on.

Bears 10, Vikings 24
Johnny Knox returns the opening kickoff down to the 8.  The Bears proceed to go backwards on multiple Cutler sacks.  Robbie Gould connects on a 38 yard field goal to close the gap to 14.  Funny, it doesn't feel that close.

Vikings 27, Bears 10
Ryan Longwell connects on a 38-yarder to open the lead back up.  Adrian Peterson coughed up another fumble but it was recovered out of bounds.  This drive was marred by penalties on both sides.  Ugly game.

Vikings 30, Bears 10

Vikings just tearing up the Bears defense.  Longwell hits a 20 yard chip shot to extend the lead to 20.  Not sure if the Bears will have enough players to finish this game.  Tillman, Pace and Briggs have left the game with a variety of injuries.

Vikings 36, Bears 10

Vikings must be trying to get more first place votes by running up the score.   Adrian Peterson strolls in for a TD.  Absolute embarrassment.

Thanks to all for participating.  Wish the Bears would have showed up.

I need to crack out a Thesaurus to find more adjectives for horrible, awful, horrendous, hideous.  What's your one word to describe this game?   Hit up the comments.  Plenty more coverage of the massacre here and at Bears Goggles On.

Warning! Warning! Warning! Sensitive adults and children should NOT view the Bears vs. Vikings game. Only emotionally stable adults should view this massacre. Body bags will be provided by the Denver Broncos, inc. This is going to be ugly! Don't worry - Your Bronco Lovin' Mama will be with you the whole way!

Well said.... The Bears can't do anything right anymore. I do think the coaching staff will be fired at the end of the season. With all the mental mistakes and poor play, it's highly unlikely they will respond anymore to Smith.

Jay "I'm indespensible" Cutler can be comforted today by the thought of only one more month and he gets a nice, long, nicely paid vacation! Oh, yeah! There's a lot of activities open to Jay with 30 million buckaroos!

Bears will win today.
Who has Fox announcing on this one - Caligula?

Does Lovie Smith have an eleven million dollar contract?

Vikings inactives: QB S. Rosenfels, WR J. Johnson, CB A. Winfield, RB A. Young, LB E. Henderson, C J. Cooper, DT F. Evans, & DE J. Mitchell.

No such luck about AP sitting out, but Winfield is sitting so maybe just maybe the Bears can take a few shots in the passing game, if Cutler is upright that is.

Will Fox "break away" from Skins / Eagles??

Rumor that even Rupert Murdoch wants the Skins / Eagles to triple overtime.

Mike Burzawa said:

Fox cuts away from the Eagles/Skins locally with the Eagles up 3 kicking off to the Redskins. Expect the Eagles to hold on.

Not at all confident about this one, we have to stop AP...and give Cutler some protection.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Jared Allen is gonna be all over Cutler like a purple suit.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Getting ready for kickoff. Bears set to kick away. Gould boots it deep into the end zone for a touchback. Here comes Favre.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

And here we go. AP gets a 14 yard reception to get it going.

Mike Burzawa said:

2 plays - 2 first downs for the Vikes. Not going well. Hey, at least they stopped AP on the run. Vikes at midfield. Nice pass defensed by Hillenmeyer. 3rd and long. Can the Bears actually stop a long conversion attempt? Nope. Favre hooks up with Harvin for 17 yards and a first down. UGH. And there's that damn Viking horn again!

Mike Burzawa said:

Mike Burzawa said:

Cutler and the Bears gake over at the 35. He hits Bennett to pick up 7. Bubble screen loses 2. Ouch! Can we please stop this dumb play when they are playing tight coverage? 3rd and 5. Crowd going nuts. 3 yard pass to Olsen. I feel like it's the mid-90's again! 3 yard passes on 3rd and 5. Come on Turner!!!

jack lacan said:

The Vikings look bored.

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

Lousy punt by Maynard sets up the Vikes at the 26. Uh oh, Briggs shaken up on the play. This could go from bad to worse if he's down.

jack lacan said:

Hope Briggs doesn'r have to read D.C. and Marvel for the afternoon.

Jack Lacan

jack lacan said:

Listen carefully to Buck and Aiken on Bears offense.

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Briggs walked off under his own power. Hope he's back soon. Favre winds up off play action for a bomb attempt to Rice but it's overthrown. Tillman was stride for stride. Nice D + bad throw. 3rd and 10. Bears actually stop a 3rd and long. Vikes set to punt to Hester. Fair catch attempt was muffed, but Dev fell on it quickly. Bears will take over at the 33.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Good news from the Twitter-verse @BradBiggs Briggs jogging on the sideline. They just gave him his helmet back.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte picks up a couple yards on first down and Forte sweeping left picks up about 7 to set up a 3rd and 1. Let's go offense! So of course they run up the middle into a wall. Horrible play call. Late flag ifor illegal substitution on Anthony Adams. Doesn't matter - Bears were short anyway. Nonetheless, Bears dumb penalties = 2. Maynard pins the Vikes inside the 5. Let's go defense. So far, better than I expected.

jack lacan said:

user-pic

Aiken should realize that Favre looks 85 years old in his mirror at home.

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Peterson takes the handoff to get out to the 8. Pickup of 4. Peterson tries again and gets nothing. Bears run defense starting out all right. 3rd and 6 coming up. Favre hits Rice for 15 and the Viking horn sounds again! Come on D!

jack lacan said:

user-pic

Still scoreless ---

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Favre sets up a screen beautifully to Chester Taylor for a big gain. Favre flirts with an INT off the receivers hands. 2nd and 10 with about 3 minutes lets in the first. Peterson knifes through the Bears defense on a draw play to pick up 15. What was I saying about the run defense?

jack lacan said:

user-pic

Joe Buck watching wrong game...

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

False start penalty pushes the Vikes back to the 40. Peterson picks up that and more on the next carry. Favre cannot connect with Harvin. That was a laser beam that Harvin couldn't hang on to. Tebow never put that much behind a throw in Florida. Bernard Berrian was WIDE OPEN along the left sideline. Manning or Bowman blew a coverage. Vikings with first and goal.

jack lacan said:

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Vikes try an end-around pass from Berrian to Shiancoe. Pass interference on Afalava in the end zone. First and goal at the 1. Flag on the play. Offsides on the Bears. Dumb Bears penalties = 3. At least that one only cost them 1/2 a yard. Quarter will not end on the penalty. Afalava atones for his pass interference with a sack of Favre that costs the Vikes 14 yards. That ends the first quarter with the Vikings on the doorstep, but the Bears defense holding up so far.

jack lacan said:

user-pic

Flava Flave --- Yes...

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

2nd and goal from the 15 to open the 2nd quarter. Favre through a bunch of Bears defeners to Harvin for a Touchdown. Vikes up 7-0.

jack lacan said:

Vikings doing a great job keeping Jay Cutler off the field.

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

A 96-yar drive will do that.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Danieal Manning with a strong return to give the Bears good field position, so we've got that going for us.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Olsen catch the slant and coughs it up, but he's ruled down. Whew! Cutler hits Olsen as the Bears pick up their first first down of the game.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler 6 for 6, with three straight to Olsen. Devin Aromashodu (I'll call him DA from now on) with a nice grab. Bears about to enter... (cue the ominous music)...THE RED ZONE. 2nd and 10 from the 24 yard line. Cutler hits Johnny Knox with a perfect pass for a TOUCHDOWN!!! Great play!!!

jack lacan said:

user-pic

A touchdown...You'll Never Walk Alone...

Jack Lacan

jack lacan said:

Last week that pass from Cutler is in the stands...Go figure...

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Did the Bears actually just hit a perfect pass from Cutler to Knox? Still shocked.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Harvin takes an end-around to pick up a big chunk of yardage. 35 yard to be exact. Rice with another first down catch.

jack lacan said:

user-pic

Is it possible for Hester to run that Vike play with Harvin??

Jack Lacan

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Vikes at the 35 and Favre hits Berrian for about 7 yards. 3rd and 3 coming up. Vikes over 2-1 pass to run ratio. Favre hits Rice again - 11 yards and another first. Did I mention that I hate that Viking horn?

UKBearsFan said:

UKBearsFan said:

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Favre hits Harvin with a bubble screen, which gains 4 yards. It works when you're not in press coverage. Another 3rd and 3 coming up. Chester Taylor with a 10 yard TD catch. All too easy.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Johnny Knox back to receive the kickoff and takes it out from a yard deep in the endzone. Knox fumbles and the Vikes recover. JACKASS! Lost it while rolling over the tackler. ARGH!!!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lovie Smith will burn a timeout, er, challenge this one. Don't see any way this is overturned. Maybe Lovie taped a $5-er inside the little hood that the ref looks under to review the plays.

Shuge said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

sorry, from top to bottom...cutler is trying to be superman because he's stuck chasing the whole league. the bears have done this to him and have made him a punchline, just like they did with rex, rick mirer and any other poor soul who is cursed to go under center for the organization.

TheFoss1957 said:

user-pic

Glad to see both our Coaching staff and QB both on their games today! ...oh! ...Wait!

ShieldsUpCaptain said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Question to the group:

Would the Bears have been better off not making the Cutler trade? With Orton as QB they would have a worse record I think and could wind up 5-11 which would easily be a top 10 or top 6 pick.

Would you rather have seen the Bears take a Colt McCoy or other QB that high or stick with the Cutler trade?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

I think with Orton the Bears would have been 2-8 this season. This trade will make them better when they get pieces around Cutler.

TheFoss1957 said:

user-pic

Disagree...Cutler had done nothing AMAZING to say that HE won games for us this year...and in fact, was directly responsible for a couple losses...KO was above .500 with this same talent...and HAS shown to be vital to the Donkeys...PLUS we would have kept a couple picks to plug OL holes...the trade is (and was) a stone cold no-win for the Bears. (as I posted in April in Denver Post Bronco's forums).

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Favre steps up in the pocket and tries to hit Shiancoe. It bounces off his chest and nearly gets picked off by Hillenmeyer. Favre under heat and just flips it to AP. 2 minute warning.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears actually hold up and the Vikings punt. Cutler is sacked as Jimmy Kennedy blows through. Wasn't he on the Bears for a cup of coffee? Cutler sacks = 1. Never mind. Vikes offsides. Bears 1st down. 1:19 left from their own 40.

Shuge said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

i think we're in dire need of another true RB that can push and compliment forte and keep him from getting overworked. he looks a step slower and the last thing we need is to turn him into eddie george, who was done way too soon from overworking him.

ShieldsUpCaptain said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I completely agree.

Two good RBs is an enormous advantage. Sadly the Bears had two really good ones but chased them out of town in Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. Add 2 RBs to a good O-line and you own the 4th quarter.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte with a nice catch and run to pick up the first down AND get out of bounds. Cutler scrambles to pick up 8 yards and get out of bounds. 1:06 left with plenty of time.

masabe said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

or, #20, depending on how one counts

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler with another pick - this time off a deflection and Jared Allen is Johnny on the Spot. Pass interference not called. Cutler INT's = 2.

ShieldsUpCaptain said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The WR should've had that. Like in baseball how there are wild pitches and then errors on the catcher, the same thing should be in the NFL with INTs and WR screw ups. If the WR can catch it, then it shouldn't be scored as an INT.

Not trying to whine in favor of Cutler, but I just think that you can't knock his stats because a WR can't bring it home.

masabe said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

any one else think the announcers were suggesting that the INT should have been a pass interference call against the vikings?

Bearfon said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Aikmen didn't just suggest it was pass interference, he said it definitely was pass interference.

Shuge said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

when things are going badly, you're NEVER going to get those calls...they missed it, but the truth tells me that if you don't play solid, fundamental football, they're just going to assume you made a mistake and that were wasn't a penalty.

Mike Burzawa said:

CoachA2525 said:

bozarks said:

Has Cutler ruined the bears or did the Bears ruin Cutler???

glenn said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You know Cutler is doing nothing more or less than he has done his whole career. Cutler can play much better, but so far too often ChiTown has seen his bad side. When the Bears traded for him and all the Bear fans went crazy about this is the final piece, blah, blah, blah the football fans who have seen Cutler play since Vanderbilt tried to explain what he was like. No one in ChiTown wanted to listen. In fact way too many Bears fans keep giving him a free ride no matter how bad he plays. Cutler will play better and once the Bears get some better offensive talent you will see it. If Bears think they have the 2nd coming of Montana though you are going to very, very disappointed.

ShieldsUpCaptain said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Just who on the Bears offense does Cutler have?

Name one PROVEN wide receiver on the Bears roster. Name one PROVEN (sans the flash in the pan rookie campaign) running back. How about that offensive line? A bunch of pro bowlers there too!

So you know what, I'm not gonna go after Cutler when the other 10 guys are 10x worse.

Cutler goes down again. Cutler sacks = 2, both on this drive. Robbie Gould to kick a meaningless field goal; converts a 38 yard FG.

I have checked in and out of this game as I had some pressing things going on, but I thought this was do or die for the Bears and yet Lovie Smith seems to have almost no sense of Urgency. In fact, listening to his comments at half, he basically said there is plenty of football to be played and they need to keep doing what they have been doing. ??? Are Bear fans not concerned about this? They seem to be sleep walking.

These refs know there will be no challenge from Lovie on anything they call. Bring on Holmgren, Shanahan, or Cowher. It is time for someone with a football brain.

Bearfon said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Lovie's halftime comment was great. "We just have to stop the turnovers". What game is he watching? I guess there is no problem with your left tackle deciding not to block, or your defense deciding 3rd down is optional, or your running back just runs into the back of his offensive lineman and tackled for no gain, etc... Glad to hear these are not problems.

Mike Burzawa said:

Most yards given up in the last 428 games - Great Job Lovie. You just keep impressing us with every passing year. Oh wait, it's Angelo's fault. It was even Angelo's fault during the Wanny years, and even during the Dick Juaron years. Dick was there 2 seasons prior to Angelo, but any losses in those years were also Angelo's fault. More numbers, 2007, 38 points given up in the 4th qtr at lowly Detroit (all time NFL record). There are 12 more of these instances, but Chicago doesn't have the stomach to hear any more.
