Expect a Sweet(ness) Day at Soldier Field

The Cleveland Browns are next on the docket for the Bears.  Besides sporting their "Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" orange jerseys on Sunday, they'll be honoring one of the true greats in NFL history en route to a bounce back beatdown of the hapless Cleveland Browns.

Walter's signature TD dive over the pile

The Bears are preparing a tribute to Sweetness on Sunday to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of Walter Payton's passing.  The Tribune's Fred Mitchell shares this in his article:

Meanwhile, the family is urging fans to "wear their No. 34 Walter Payton Bears jerseys, headbands or whatever" to Sunday's game. Walter's mother, Alyne, will make the trip from Mississippi to take part in the halftime tribute arranged by the Bears organization. Former Payton teammates Matt Suhey and Dennis Gentry will escort the family onto the field.

I grew up watching Sweetness high-stepping and stiff-arming his way to the all-time NFL rushing mark.  I looked up to Walter as my first childhood hero.  I remember when he made his emotional announcement while on The Score.

I'll never forget the day that Walter passed away.  It is like when a previous generations remember where they were when they heard that Kennedy had been shot.  I cried that day.  One of my childhood heroes was gone, but he left all of us with plenty of memories:

CBS 2 Chicago's Ryan Baker sat down with Jarrett and Connie Payton to talk about Walter and the 10 year mark of his passing. Check out a video of the interview here.

I am sure it's going to be a Sweet day at Soldier Field on Sunday and if you're not lucky enough to be there in person, be sure to join us right back here for our live Game Day Blog where we'll be providing wall to wall coverage and commentary as the action unfolds. I'll be wearing my #34, will you?
