FINAL SCORE: Bears 48 Lions 24

Good morning and welcome to Bears Game Day!  It's October yet this is the first noon kickoff of the season as the Bears host the suddenly winning Detroit Lions

Yes, in case you somehow missed it, the Lions actually won a game, beating the Washington Redskins last week to snap a 19-game losing streak.

Don't worry, Bears fans.  There's another streak that the Lions still have going and that's consecutive road losses, which stands at 13.

Ironically, the last time the Lions won on the road was here in Chicago when they bested the Bears 16-7 back in 2007.  Let's not see that come full circle today!

As the Game Day staff did last week while I was on the road with the Bears for their game in Seattle, the in-game commentary and analysis will take place in the Comments section, so please follow along by hitting refresh often.  Sorry, an auto-fresh feature just isn't in the budget.

To join in the discussion, all you have to do is register here.  It's super easy and totally free.  What more could you ask for?  I'll be checking in about an hour before kickoff to get things rolling with some final pre-game thoughts.
Scoring Summary
Lions 7-0 - 8 plays, 73 yards 4:10 drive time

A long pass from Stafford to Calvin Johnson on the first play from scrimmage sets the Lions up.  After holding on 3rd down, a silly offsides penalty gives Detriot another set of downs.  After a terrible facemask call on Alex Brown, the Kevin Smith goes in for the 1-yard TD run.  Uh oh!

Bears 7 - Lions 7 5 plays, 73 yards, 1:59 drive time
Matt Forte breaks off a 61-yard run to set up a 1st and goal.  After a couple of failed attempts, Cutler runs it in on a great dive, helicopter smash Elway-esque TD run.  That will be on all the highlights.  WOW!  This could be a shootout!

Lions 14 - Bears 7 10 plays, 72 yard, 3:48 drive time

Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson continue to carve up the Bears pass defense.  After a 1st and 25 after a facemask penalty on Kevin Smith, the Lions convert and march down to score capped off by a 14-yard catch by TE Will Heller.  Is it too late to bet the over?

Bears 14 - Lions 14 3 plays, 35 yards 1:15 drive time
Devin Hester with a nice return to the Lions 35 was the big play.  Cutler to Bennett for a pickup of 25 to get it to first and goal and capped off by a 2-yarder to Kellen Davis to tie it at 14.

Bears 21 - Lions 14, 4 plays, 8 yards, 1:43 drive time
Tommie Harris' interception sets up the Bears with a 1st and goal.  Nice play!  After a penalty on the Bears field goal attempt give the Bears 4th and goal from the 1, the Bears take the 3 points off the board and trade them in for 7 as Cutler hits Olsen for the touchdown!  Nice gutsy call by Lovie!

Lions 21 - Bears 21, 10 plays, 98 yards (yes, 98 freakin yards) 4:25 drive time
Kevin Smith caps off a 98 yard drive with a 3-yard run.  Rookies Stafford and Pettigrew with some big plays while Calvin Johnson is still all over the field.  Bears D doesn't look like they have any answers for Megatron (Calvin Johnson).

Bears 28 - Lions 21, 1 play, 102 yards, 0:12 drive time

Johnny Knox with a kickoff return for a TOUCHDOWN!!!  Let's go Defense!!!

Bears 31 - Lions 21, 4 plays, 4 yards, 2:01 drive time
Robbie Gould caps off a short drive that was set up by Earl Bennett's nice punt return with a 52-yard field goal.  SOLD GOULD finally gets one from over 50-yards.

Bears 34 - Lions 21, 6 plays, 15 yards, 3:07 drive time
Another costly turnover deep in their own end by the Lions sets up the Bears.  Ron Turner goes run-heavy to try to get the ground game going, but the Bears have to settle for a short field goal.

Lions 24 - Bears 34, 14 plays, 64 yards, 6:45 drive time

Stafford and the Lions regain some momentum as they march down thanks to some key completions to Calvin Johnson.  This guy is having a day.  Hanson kicks a 35 yarder to bring the Lions back to within 10.

Bears 41 - Lions 24, 4 plays, 47 yards, 1:29 drive time
Bears march right back down thanks to another great kickoff return and a big 37 yard run by Matt Forte to open it up to a 17 point lead with just under 7 minutes to go.  Let's go D!

Bears 48 - Lions 24, 6 plays, 48 yards, 3:15 drive time
Garrett Wolfe caps off the drive with his first career touchdown.  A couple of nice runs in the red zone to cap off the scoring as the Bears are headed for another win and a 3-1 record going into the Bye week.

Who is announcing the game today? We've had some real clunkers the last few weeks.

Finally decent announcers.

Am very ready for kickoff

Mike Burzawa said:

Brian Billick and Thom Brennaman on the call today. Billick can be a bit of a blow-hole, so be prepared.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Here we go...
Game time temp is 56F with a 15 mph wind.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Gould kicks off for the Bears. Lions return it out to the 27 yard line.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Calvin Johnson takes Zack Bowman deep to get inside the 30 for a big gain. Yikes!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Big 3rd down stop and the Lions will try for a 40 yard attempt. And it's good. But wait, there's a flag. Oh no.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lions get a fresh set of downs inside the 20. Stafford had Johnson wide open and missed it. Whew!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Let's go defense! Lions with a false start to back 'em up 5 to set up a 2nd and 15. Kevin Smith gets a facemask call. Refs totally blew that call. Dammit!!!

John said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

One of the worst calls I have seen. Refs did not see it or call it right away, Lions complained and got the very late flag. Replay clearly showed he did not touch the face mask, just a great one armed tackle.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

1st and goal for the Lions at about the 1 yard line. Ick!
Kevin Smith plows through for the touchdown and the Lions are up 7-0. Defense did not look good on that opening drive.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

If you're late jumping on, you can check out the body of the post for a scoring summary.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Jay Cutler and the Bears take over at the 27. After a 7 yard pickup to Earl Bennett, Matt Forte picks up a HUGE gain to set up a first and goal! NICE!

Greg Olsen territory...

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Right. Almost had it!

Mike Burzawa said:

JC checking off to set up Olsen one on one on the outside, but Olsen can't haul it in. 3rd and goal coming up.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

WOW!!! JC takes flight to dive in for an amazing TD run! It's gotta be the pink shoes!!!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lions take over at the 28 and immediately go to Calvin Johnson for a 1st down. Clearly the Lions think they have a mismatch here.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

After a facemask on Kevin Smith, the Lions get a 1st and 25. Mo Morris with a 12 yard gain and a quick hit to #21 to convert another 1st down. Let's go D!

zebrarider said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Let's hope that is cleared up soon!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lions run an end around that the Bears just miss breaking up in the backfield. Calvin Johnson picks up another 1st down.
Stafford missed TE Petigrew wide open. After missing another pass, it's another early 3rd down. Mr. Everywhere Calvin Johnson wide open as Tillman slips and picks up a first down.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears needs a turnover here. They are picking our secondary apart. Billick points out the Bears are adjusting their defensive scheme to counter the Lions passing attack. Stafford is just off on his throws.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lions convert another 3rd and 10 as Will Heller hauls in a TD as the Lions go up 14-7.

John said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Not supposed to convert 3rd and 10 so easily. Lovie is not a great defensive coordinator either. Bring back Ron Rivera!

chibear85 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

where is the freakin defense we re making this guy look like an all pro!!!!!!!!!!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You guys have a talented team, but the head coach looks clueless.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Johnny Knox looks to get a little daylight with a nice return out past the 40. This is going to be a shootout. Anyone know what the over-under was? Me thinks OVER would be a good call.

ChicagoKirk said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

It IS Lovies Defense and we'll go from there.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears getting all conservative with two Forte runs after set up with good field position. 3rd and 4 coming up. Cutler can't connect with Olsen and the Bears will have to punt.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Your head coach is certainly clueless and uninspired.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Nice boot by Maynard to pin the Lions inside their own 10. Let's go defense. It's time to step it up!

chibear85 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

nice punt brad....need a turnover here

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

For us to go up and down the field and score touchdowns like this means your scheme is laughable.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Stafford tried to hit a slant but the Bears read it perfectly. Stafford has to scramble as the Lions face 3rd and 4.
Zack Bowman with a pass interference call to set up another Lions first down and get them out from the shadow of their own goalposts.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You got to be kidding me - we haven't converted this many 3rd downs in 9 or 10 years.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We've had the ball the whole 1st qtr - oh, wait, another big 3rd down coming. 3rd and 7 coming up

mh1001 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Alex Brown is dominating the LT today

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Well you finally stopped us.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Alex Brown with a big sack and it's Devin Hester time. Bears with the ball at the Lions 35 yard line. Time to knot this game up right now!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have a great QB, but the head coach is clueless. Too bad the QB isn't with someone who knows what they are doing. You guys also have the only head coach to go 0-16 on your staff, so good luck with that......

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Hey look, a Lions fan. Is it hard to type with a paper bag over your head? Nice 1st quarter and welcome!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Well I seem to be typing just fine. does your head coach wear a paper bag over his head? If not - he may consider it after that 1st half on your own field.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Jay Cutler hits a laser to Earl Bennett down to the 10 and that caps off an exciting and unexpected 1st quarter. The Bears on the doorstep but the Lions lead 14-7.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Johnny Knox hauls one in to get it down to the 2. Play action works beautifully and Kellen Davis is wide open for the TOUCHDOWN!!! Nice drive Bears!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have a pretty good looking little receiver in Knox, but the Defense is exhausted and as no answer for our rookie QB and Calvin Johnson. I clearly expected double teams on Johnson and lots of pressure on Stafford, but your D-line coach doesn't get it.

chibear85 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

need the d to step up on this drive!!!!!!

John said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

So who expected 28 points in the first 16 minutes?

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another long 3rd down

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lions start at the 22. Briggs in the backfield to blow that up and set up 2nd and 10. Kevin Smith is stuffed in the backfield. Lance Briggs is taking over! 3rd and 15. Stop 'em now!
Tommie Harris with the INT!!! WOW!!! Nice pressure by Anderson to set up the pick! NICE!!!!

zebrarider said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Great job D! Now stay awake!

John said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Yes! Interception on a screen pass! First down inside the 10.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Well know you are doing what you should have done 25 minutes ago - Great job on your defense. I still think your head coach is clueless........

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears with the ball with 1st and goal and the give to Forte to pick up about 4. Hester with a nice catch, but the Lions surround him to keep him out of the end zone. 3rd and goal from the 2. Cutler overthrows everybody as they set up for the short field goal.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

A penalty on Detroit during the field goal attempt. Bears will go for it on 4th and 1. Cutler hits Olsen on the 4th down to give the Bears the lead at 21-14! Nice call!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Uh oh, Hester heading back to the locker room. Maybe he got dinged on that slant pass where the Lions crunched him near the goal line.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Taking points off the board with 1 roll of the dice - gutsy or clueless? Either way it worked out for you. Stafford and Johnson will now go down the field about 90 yards. Hester and Peterson out - more good news for the Lions. Do you guys even tackle during the week? Just wondering.......

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Your coach should not challenge that......will probably lose that

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Hester's return is questionable with a shoulder injury while backup running back Adrian Peterson is out with a knee injury.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Does your head make a habit of ill-advised challenges. Just wondering cause that one has no chance of being over-turned....

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lovie loses another challenge. Damn! We need to fire the guy in the booth who tells Lovie when to challenge.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Wow - your head coach wasted a challenge. 31 losses out of 47 challenges..............pathetic.....A very talented team with no coaching direction.

zebrarider said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have an interesting "game" strategy of your own. Nothing good to say about your own team or coach so you tear down others. Very interesting. Pathetic, but interesting

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

3rd and short - an easy conversion coming up.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Mark Anderson playing inspired football! 3rd and 3 coming up!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Earl Bennett fills in on punt return duties and takes it out to the Bears 42-yard line with a nice return.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The word on the street is the Bears make virtually no contact during the week, no tackling, etc.... Probably have a lot of injuries which hold you back.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Knox proves to be slippery with a few nifty little moves on 2nd down after Wolfe was shut down on first. Another screen to Knox on the outside wide open to pick up the first. Nice play.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Jay Cutler dancing around the pocket too much gets it stripped but Desmond Clark is Johnny on the Spot to cover it up, but not after a 14 yard loss.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler took a shot in the back as he took another sack. Looked like he was trying to go long. 3rd and forever to go. Wolfe takes the screen pass, but is well short of the 1st down. Let's see if Maynard can pin the Lions again.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Maynard pins the Lions at their own 2. Nice boot! Calvin Johnson is out after Stafford misses him on a long pass attempt. Time out Detroit.

zebrarider said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Maynard seems to be having a great game!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

After Maynard pins the Lions at their own 2, Stafford hits a laser to Calvin Johnson out the 34 to give the Lions some breathing room.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

What good does it do for your punter to pin people back week in and week out, yet your D consistently gives up long 3rd down conversions. What a talented team compared to us, but you guys are grasping at straws. You need a good defensive coordinator.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

After a timeout, Stafford hits a laser to Calvin Johnson out the 34 to give the Lions some breathing room.

Stafford with a nice scramble to pick up the first down and then some. This kid looks pretty good.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We are a very talent poor team with a good up and coming coaching staff. We would take your talent any day.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

This take it down to the 2-minute warning. Would be nice to keep the Lions out of the endzone here. Let's go D!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Tons of missed tackles on your Defense. Does your Defensive coordinator teach or practice tackling? Long 3rd down conversions. You need a good defensive coordinator.

John said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Yup. We lost a good one after the Super Bowl loss.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Well executed screen pass to the tight end Pettigrew for a big pickup.

Kevin Smith takes the pitch and picks up a couple to get out to the 10. Stafford misses the backup tight end Heller to set up a 3rd and 6 with 1:07 left in the first half.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another 3rd and 6 conversion - Wow - haven't seen this in 9 or 10 years - 98 YARDS. YOUR DEFENSE IS EXHAUSTED AND CAN'T GET OFF THE FIELD.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Stafford fires a laser to Pettigrew inside the 5. Smith takes the draw play to cap off a 98-yard drive with a touchdown. Lions just carved up the defense. 0:26 left. Interested to see what the offense does.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Been before the Millen administration since our offense was so deadly. Your fans do not even cheer.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Kickoff is out of bounds to set up great field position. Time for some Cutler magic with 2 timeouts left.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The Bears look terrible today. A loss to the Lions would be a huge setback.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

With Cutler's arm - no shot to the Endzone? you need a good offensive coordinator. Our defense is not very good at all

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The Bears can't even take a gift.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I thought Knox and Olson were fast enough to make a play in the End zone - thanks for not trying.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte gets a quick dumpoff in the middle to get out to the 50. With a quick timeout, the Bears have 0:12 left to see what they can do. Johnny Knox can't hang on to the slant. Cutler hits another quick slant but still out of range. Looks like a hail Mary coming up. Detroit calls a timeout after seeing the Bears setup.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Cutler may throw another interception here if he goes to the End Zone

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler heaves it up, but it's knocked down. End of a high-scoring and ugly defensive first half.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I can't see the Bears winning after the half they just had. Hopefully Lovie can figure out what's wrong and fix it fast.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

WOW - almost another INT. We'll take the 1st half. I am afraid your coaching staff may make some adjustments and realize all of our weaknesses. We'll see in the 2nd half.

ChicagoKirk said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Time to go back to the defensive drawing board. Bears will receive to start the 2nd half. Time for a breather...

parrotsnest said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Will we ever allow Cutler to go deep w/ Knox or Hester?

Or is our O-Line too pathetic to allow the time?

GREAT defensive effort today, right?

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Sounds like you guys don't think your head coach will make any adjustments. I remember we beat you twice in 2007 after your so called Superbowl in '06. We were the worst team in football in '07. I am surprised your coaching staff wasn't fired a few years ago. Must have been the SB that kept them employed. We should have fired Matt Millen 7 years ago........

parrotsnest said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Golions, Cutler hasn't thrown a pick in the game.. so don't know what "another interception" you're referring to would be..

PapaBear67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

This defense has been terrible in the first half of all 4 games this season. Even if they get lucky and win the North, they have no chance in the playoffs. They're making a rookie QB look like Tom Brady, just like they made Seneca Wallace look like Donovan McNabb. What happens when they play the Vikings, who can both run and pass, or the Ravens, who have a great defense and a solid offense? Lovie's scheme stinks, and our great D-linemen can't get any pressure. Tommie Harris should be sent to the glue factory.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I seen him throw 4 in one game a few weeks ago - that's what I meant. He's great - don't understand why you didn't take a shot earlier in that series. Our defense is horrible.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

JACKASS!!! Johnny Knox with the kick return for a TOUCHDOWN!!!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Hester is out for the 2nd half along with AP. D needs to step up. Lions take over with the ball at the 23. Stafford tries to evaded the swarming Bears D, but Roach brings him down for a big loss. 3rd and 19 coming up. False start on the Lions will set them back another 5. 3rd and 24.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have a very talented team, no doubt. That Johnny Knox is really good. I can't believe we are even in the game. Maybe your coaches made some adjustments - we will see if you can stop us. Again, our D is terrible. I thought Cutler would have a field day.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Brennaman disses the Bears home crowd, saying that it hasn't given the Bears a big home field advantage. Lions set to punt to Bennett. He brings it to the Lions 40 for great field position. Time to step on the Lions throats.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We'll take your talent all day long, but not your coaching staff.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

GOLIONS - I've heard enough about our coaching staff out of you. Leave ripping the Bears coaches to Bears fans.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Our Special teams are also very poor - let's see if you can take advantage of the latest special teams breakdown of the Lions....

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte going nowhere again, with a 2 yard loss. Bears need a score here. Apparently the Lions need flash cards to help them with their reading.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I remember Forte being a great running back, but there's no where to run right now.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Who is your left Guard - he's getting beat like he stole somebody's wallet......

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Nice to see Desmond Clark back. He picks up about 7 yards and then Knox hauls one in, but can't escape the swarming Lions. Gould to attempt a 52 yarder. Nice! SOLID GOULD!! Finally, we can stop listening to the "he's never hit one over 50" nonsense. Bears tack on 3 to go up 10. NICE!!!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

3rd and 7 - thought Cutler would use his arm and go down field.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Your kicker is awesome - great accuracy

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

The Lions take a knee to take it out to the 20.
Stafford gobbled up for a 10-yard loss on the sack. Way to represent the ChicagoNow team Wale!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I love your team, Mike - don't get me wrong. Your coaching staff makes me feel better about the last 8 years in Detroit.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Kevin Smith takes the handoff for a short gain and it sets up another 3rd and long. Bears D swarms and stifles the Lions to set up another punt. The Lions' Felton dinged up on the play.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bennett nearly brings it out to the 50 to set up Cutler and the offense with great field position again. Keep pouring it on offense. Don't let up Turner!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have a great swarming defense, but what I see is your best players down field in coverage. That is a little surprising that your defensive guy doesn't keep most of his best players around the line of scrimmage (except your CB - #33) - he's good and obviously needs to cover down field.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I guess it goes top show that scheme does matter - even with decent players.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte still can't get it going. After the 61-yarder, he has 8 yards on 5 carries. Cutler fires a bullet at Knox, who can't haul it in. 3rd and 9 coming up. Cutler does a great job evading the free rusher but can't scramble for the 1st. Another punt for Maynard. Can he pin the Lions again?

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I am surprised you can't run against our porous defense. You have a guard (can't pronounce his name) who is limiting your running attack. Fine by me.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lions set to take over at the 17 yard line. Smith brings in a short pass to pick up 4. Stafford calls a timeout. Could be key to burn one so early in a tightly contested game.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Stafford back in the shotgut and hits a little pitch to Kevin Smith that goes for 1 yard. 3rd and 5 coming up. Stafford coughs it up as Izzy Idonije and Ogunleye covers it up! Bears ball!!! NICE D!!!!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We have a long way to go with our talent poor team. Hope you guys and your defensive coordinator figures it out, cause I would hate to see that media Whore Brett Favre win the division.

Mike Burzawa said:

That was almost a disaster. The Bears NEED to figure out how to run. It's been a nice quarter, though.

GOLIONS said:

You can run to the right when that one guy with the name thing pulls around - but that's the only running play you have. Maybe the Bears will implement some counter action to get Forte going.

Mike Burzawa said:

Forte picks up a few more to get it down to the 5. 2nd and goal to go. Maybe some play action here? Nope. Forte gets it down to the 1 for a short 3rd and goal. Time to punch it in one way or another right now. Cutler stumbles as he tries to pull out from center and the play is broken. Gould comes up to tack on 3 more. Dang. Needed a TD there. Gould solid again and the Bears go up 13. Why am I still nervous?

parrotsnest said:

That wasn't getting in regardless.. we DO NOT have a run game right now. Turner never took one shot at the endzone w/ Cutler. this is ridiculous. Why did you trade for Cutler again if you're not going to use him?

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We are hanging around - the Bears do not seem to score many TDs. Thanks for keeping us around. Keeps me from having to do yard work.

parrotsnest said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We need to teach our Center not to step on the damn quarterback sometime.. seriously this Bears team is bush league.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another item from the scouting report is numerous center QB exchange problems on this team - perhaps Cutler stumbled, but looks like Cutler save a bad exchange and prevented a turn over. Wow - lions are laying down and basically playing dead. Can the Bears score a TD?

Mike Burzawa said:

Detroit with a penalty in the kick return to set up more bad field position. After a couple of short pickups, it's 3rd and 5 from the 16. Underthrown by Stafford and the Lions set to punt again. Bears should get good field position again. Keep it coming.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another short field for Cutler and the Bears. If they throw in some counter action, our defense will fold like a lawn chair. Our run Defense blows - but not with poor guard play like you are getting from your line. We don't even need to control the gaps cause your guard is very poor.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another great defensive stand by our defense. We are hanging around.

parrotsnest said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Lovie Smith already decides to run the clock w/ a full quarter to play.. I see where this is going :(

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You should be more patriotic and leave the ripping of the coaching staff to outsiders who view things with an outside, looking in view. I also have the right, however, to blast the lions myself after suffering as long as we have. We are not however going on 101 years on heart-ache.

Mike Burzawa said:

Lions with the ball at the 19 and Stafford underthrows Pettigrew. The Lions looking a little shakey. Kevin Smith takes the handoff for a few yards. 3rd and 6 and Stafford hooks up with Calvin Johnson for a 1st down. Lions going to a hurry up. Smith loses a shoe as he loses yardage on the first down carry.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Maybe we should just take a knee on 1st and 2nd down - then we will convert on 3rd down with that head-scratching scheme you run on defense.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Stafford finding some confidence again as he's picking up yardage in chunks. Mo Morris picks up a yard on a little dump off to set up 3rd and 4. Under 12 minutes left as the Lions at the 40. Calvin Johnson picks it up for another first down. Stafford air mails another open receiver. If this kid can calm down, he could be special.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have your LBs and the line them drop them back? Not working - GO LIONS - we are in this game even though we laid down and tried to die for you.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Pettigrew down the seam to get it down to the 10. Lions threatening. Kevin Smith up the gut for 5 more. Lions are on the doorstep.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

WIDE OPEN and Stafford misses it. If your LBs come to the line, maybe your defensive guy should send them.

Mike Burzawa said:

Calvin Johnson brought down on a nice open field tackle by Danieal Manning. Comes up a bit shaky. Is he playing possum? 3rd and 5 and Stafford is brought down by Ogunleye. Nice game by Wale! Lions forced to kick a field goal. Hanson splits the uprights as a flag is thrown on the kick. Bears are offsides, but the Lions decline the penalty to settle for 3 to cut the margin back down to 10.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I thought from years past that the Bears were the kind of team that would stick their foot on your throat - but I haven't seen that in recent years. Playing not to lose - again - I say thanks. TIGERS WIN !!!

Mike Burzawa said:

Danieal Manning with another big return, setting up more great field position. It's time to cash some of this great field position into a touchdown instead of field goals. WOuld love to make this a 3-score game. Lions working on Stafford as he appears to have been hurt on the Ogunleye sack.

Mike Burzawa said:

Cutler hits Forte on a 2nd and 7 to get really close to a first down. The Bears pick up the first to the 38 as Cutler takes a time out. 7 minutes to go and the Bears getting close to field goal range, but we all know they really need another touchdown.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

More great field position - can the Bears score a TD? Run counter with Forte - you can't lose.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler tries to hit Olsen across the middle, but it's underthrown. 2nd and 10. Forte with a little shake and bake and he goes all the way for a touchdown!!! Forte with the monkey off his back! Nice moves to bring it to the house! Bears with a 17 point lead!

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Well there you go - no counter action, but our Defense will fold if you do the right stuff on your running attack. Do you guys have a sell out? I don't hear much cheering from the crowd.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

# 88 looks to be a good run blocker for you guys.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

We got Culpepper off of the scrap heap - we'll see if your defensive guy can shut him down.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Culpepper in as Stafford hurt his right knee. Not sure of the severity of the injury. Hate to see that, even for the Lions. Hope the kid is alright.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another 3rd down conversion - WOW

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Culpepper was taken off of the scrap heap. Can your defensive guru stop him?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

3rd and 7 upcoming and Culpepper shows some pocket presence to evade a sack and pick up a 1st down on a nice little throw. Injury timeout as Bowman is hurt. Let's hope it's not serious. Looks to be minor. We can't afford any more injuries on defense.

Tillman rings up Pettigrew and the announcers call for a flag. Toughen up! Nice hard but clean play. Pep misses on 2nd down to force another 3rd and 6 and Pettigrew can't find the handle. With just over 5 minutes left, the Lions will go for it down 17. INCOMPLETE! Bears take over on downs. More scoring please.

GOLIONS said:

Late hit by #33 not called - make up call from the poor call on your #96 (face mask that didn't happen). Mr. Burzawa - you did very well on this blog. Thanks. keep the pressure on your owners to make coaching changes before it's too late and you have to rebuild. You have a talented team with some poor players in certain positions, but overall talented with a strange scheme on both sides of the ball. Later.

Wolfe in for Forte and he's going nowhere. Need to set up some plays to put him in a position to succeed. Hey look, Rashied Davis. The Bears pick up another 1st down and the clock is down under 4 minutes. Wolfe with a nice cutback as the play was bottled up. Couple of flags down. Cutler with some nice downfield blocking. I am loving that! Davis with a crack-back block to negate the horsecollar. Do-over!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Nice little rollout as the Bears just keep using the pass. Kellen Davis hauls it in for another 1st down. Bears with the ball at the 19 with 2:40 left after Wolfe goes nowhere.

Injury update: Johnny Knox is dinged up and cannot finish. I thought I saw him limping earlier.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Wolfe finds a little seam and takes it down inside the 5 as we head to the 2-minute warning. This one is all but in the bank. Just a question of whether or not we can score another TD.

GOLIONS said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You have a talented team and Mr. Burzawa did a great job today. Keep the pressure on your owners to get a good coaching staff before it's too late and you have to rebuild (like us - they finally listened to us last year). Very strange scheme you have on both sides of the ball with as much talent as you have. Although your secondary and O-line guards are very poor. You have many injuries after this game. Sucks to be a lions fan, but you have a long road a head from the looks of it. Good luck. See you in Week 17.

Mike Burzawa said:

Hey GOLIONS - thanks for joining us today. Helped keep things interesting. You've got an up-and-coming team with a scary offense. Nice game!

Mike Burzawa said:

Wolfe jukes his way in for a TD! Nice play for the little guy! First career TD from the local product. Good for him!

Mike Burzawa said:

Culpepper hitting a few underneath passes to move Detroit but it's going to be too little too late. Pep seems to be the only one with a sense of urgency out there. Afalava breaks up the last attempt as the Bears double up the Lions 48-24. Not a pretty win, but give the Bears credit. They shut the Lions down in the second half. Nice win to head to the Bye at 3-1.

Mike Burzawa said:

The injury bug bites again. Good thing the Bears head to a BYE, as they need to heal up. Knox, Hester and Peterson did not finish the game. Stay tuned for updates and check back with my musings at http://beargoggleson.com for plenty of coverage before the Bears suit up again for a Sunday night game at Atlanta! It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. GO BEARS!!!
