Jay Cutler got his pay day; the pay day that we were all expecting since the Bears brought him here from the Denver Broncos back in April. This deal shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention.
When the Bears committed two first round draft picks and Kyle Orton to bring in a franchise quarterback, you knew they weren't going to let him get away.
Bears extend Cutler through 2013
Cutler was signed through 2011 prior to signing the two-year
extension. The new deal keeps Jay in Chicago though 2013 with $20
million in guaranteed money and up to $30 million overall.
Opinions of the deal generally see it as a win-win deal for both the Bears and Cutler. He gets a nice bonus check and the Bears get him at a relatively affordable price and get to use some of their salary cap space this season.
I think it's a good deal, especially for the Bears. It's like a deal with training wheels. If Jay continues to perform well, the Bears will tear up the deal and pony up more dough before it expires. If he turns out to be a flake, they only eat $20 million in guaranteed money. When you consider what first round draft picks are pulling in these days, it's quite a bargain.
