FINAL SCORE: Bears 14 Falcons 21

Greetings Bears fans and welcome to Bears Game Day.  Glad to be back after the Bye week.  It's full steam now for the rest of the season and hopefully the Super Bowl.

Leave it to the Bears to spice things up before heading to Atlanta with a rare in-season trade for Tampa defensive end Gaines Adams on Friday night.  Adams has underachieved for the Bucs after being drafted 4th overall in the 2007 draft.

The prevailing thought is that a change of scenery and the tutelage of Rod Marinelli will make this a great deal for the Bears, despite giving up a 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft.

It could spell the end of the road for fellow ChicagoNow blogger Adewale Ogunleye after this season.  Wale as well as fellow defensive end Mark Anderson are  in the last year of their deals.

The Bears face an Atlanta Falcons team on Sunday night that is coming off an impressive road victory against Mike Singletary's upstart San Francisco 49ers.  Meanwhile, the Bears are well-rested coming off their bye after a smack-down of the hapless Lions a couple of weeks ago.

In case you're new to Game Day, here's how it works.  I'll be posting a running commentary as the action unfolds in the Comments section.  Please feel free to join in the discussion by signing up with ChicagoNow here.  In the body of the post, I'll summarize the scoring so you've got a quick and handy reference to get caught up if you miss anything.   I'll be back about an hour before kickoff to check back in and get things going.

Don't forget to hit the refresh button to get the latest updates and commentary.
Don't forget to check the comments section for the running commentary.  Hey, sign in and chime in.  It gets more interesting if you all participate.  Just posting a recap of the scoring here.

Scoring Summary

Bears dominate time of possession in the first quarter, but a costly red zone INT by Cutler leaves the Bears scoreless.  Defense looks dominant as the Falcons have yet to gain a first down.

Bears 7 Falcons 0

On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Cutler hits Johnny Knox for a 23 yard TD!  Set up by a great punt return by Hester and a nice play action pass from Cutler to Earl Bennett.

Falcons 7 Bears 7
, 3 plays, 55 yards
Falcons take advantage of another Cutler INT and hit Roddy White on a quick hitter.  It was a trip right formation, but the Bears only had 2 defenders in coverage.  White picks up a couple of blocks at the point of attack and does the rest himself to go for a 40-yard TD.  Not good.

Falcons 14 Bears 7, 12 plays, 64 yards
Falcons go to the no huddle and pick the Bears defense apart.  Looked like Nick Roach was in over his head trying to call defenses on the fly.  Drive capped off by a 10 yard pass from Ryan to Gonzalez.   Not good heading to the locker room, but the Bears have been a 2nd half team and they start off with the ball in the 2nd half.

Bears 14 Falcons 14,
8 plays 92 yards
Cutler started the drive off with a 30 yard scramble and hit big plays to Olsen and a costly pas interference penalty sets up this drive.  Cutler caps it off to Olsen from the 2.  Time to play some defense!

Falcons 21 Bears 14, 7 plays 41 yards
Yes, only 41 yards because special teams wet their pants again.  A 62 yard return set up a short field.  Gonzalez with a couple of big plays and Turner caps it off with a 5 yard run.

Well that sucked!  Plenty to dissect here.  Bears looked completely unprepared for this game.  Maybe they were too busy making trades during the Bye week instead of preparing for the Falcons.  Totally sloppy, unprofessional game all around.

Offense, defense and special teams.  Ugly loss that can be summed up as missed opportunities in the first half and sloppy play in the second.

Up next, the Bears head to Cincinnati to face Cedric Benson and the surprising Bengals.  Just like last season, this loss will make you sick at the end of the year if you miss the playoffs by 1 game.

Thanks to all for participating and be sure to join us next week.

BEAR DOWN!!!

I feel like the Bears already lost a game today after Baltimore missed that kick against the Vikings. Flacco should have taken a knee in the middle of the field. What a major fail.

I know! A missed opportunity for the Ravens and the Bears.

Good evening Bears fans. Pre-game show has started. Watching the Ravens-Vikings highlights makes me a little sick. How could the Ravens miss that kick? Damn!

Bears inactives for tonight: Juaquin Iglesias, Adrian Peterson, D.J. Moore, Lance Louis, Matt Toeaina, Jarron Gilbert, Hunter Hillenmeyer & Gaines Adams

Why not trot out Adams? How much is there to learn playing DE? Go get Matt Ryan!

Also interesting that Devin Aromashodu will make his debut tonight.

Falcons inactives: John Parker Wilson, Tye Hill, Ovie Mughelli, Antoine Harris, Spencer Adkins, Will Svitek, Garrett Reynolds, Vance Walker

Poor Dick Jauron. Bills just miss a potential game-winning field goal vs the Jets. A la Scott Norwood, it was wide right. Heading to OT.

How about the Saints putting a beatdown on the Giants? WOW! They hung 48 on that defense? Saints are scary good.

Mike Burzawa said:

What happened to the Titans? They give up 59 points in a snowy New England and can't scratch in the scoring column themselves? Was Albert Haynesworth all that? He hasn't exactly helped the 'Skins all that much.

You would think we could've taken care of that over the bye, but not so. I'll put in another request, but management is really tight with the $'s. :)

Mike Burzawa said:

Bears averaging 26 points per game, Falcons D only giving up about 16 ppg. I think the Bears will need to score a bunch if they expect to win tonight.

Mike Burzawa said:

Dan Patrick is such an ass. Says to Dungy that it looks like the Falcons took the Colts blueprint with Ryan, Turner and Roddy White. Who doesn't use that blueprint? A good QB, RB and WR. Sheeesh!

Ryan testing the middle of the Bears D early. Misses to Gonzo. Wow! Nick Roach meets Turner in the hole! Stuffed!

Mike Burzawa said:

Briggs in Ryans face to force an incomplete and Hester back to receive the punt.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Hester had it, but somehow just tripped up. Bears start at the 38.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler opens up with a complete to Hester for about 9. 2nd and short. Time for a bomb! Instead a dumpoff to McKie for a loss. 3rd and short coming up. Cutler hits Olsen on a short out to pick up the first down.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler hands to Forte on the delay to pick up about 4. Forte again to get another few yards with Olsen leading the way at H-back. 3rd and 5 coming up. Cutler hits Earl Bennett on another out to pick up another first down.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler hits Hester on a quick slant across the middle for a first down. Bears on the doorstep of the red zone at the 24 yards line. Forte tries to get outside but only picks up a three. Cutler hits Bennett for a few yards to set up 3rd and 1. 9 plays, 45 yards so far. Cutler takes the sneak to pick up the first. Nice push by Garza. Bears at the 13. Forte goes right but can't slip through. 2nd and 9. JC takes a timeout when he doesn't like what he sees.

Rock Mamola said:

user-pic

Exactly what I said...Orton type drive...ends with INT.

PKinWL said:

I think you have Orton confused with Grossman

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler tries to hit Hester on a fade pattern. Right play, wrong player. D Hest is not going to win many of those battles. Cutler under some pressure and here we go again - he's picked off! Damn! Big missed opportunity there after an impressive opening drive.

PKinWL said:

that fade pattern wasn't thrown well

Mike Burzawa said:

Falcons take over at the 14. Turner takes it for a gain of 1. Good analysis by Collinsworth. Norwood takes the swing pass and doesn't get far. Tillman and Briggs gobble him up. Ryan hits Jenkins but Bowman stops him short of the first down. Atlanta set to punt again. Hester ready to roll. Fair catch at the 37 yard line. Bears start with decent field position again. Time to light one up.

Rock Mamola said:

Bears D looking good...back to back 3 and outs....something they haven't done in the first half all year.

Let's open it up a bit Turner.....throw the ball down the field.

PKinWL said:

wow, did omiyale whiff on that block for Forte in the open field

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler scrambles well to get out of trouble but Knox can't hang on. Forte gets the ball, but dances too much in the backfield. Holding called on Omiyale to negate it anyway. Hole opened up but he didn't hit it. 2nd and 20. Screen to Forte to get 8 yards back. 3rd and 12 coming up. 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter. Arlanta jumps offsides to give the Bears 5 more yards. 3rd and 7 from the 40. Knox with a nice grab, but he's stuffed just short of the stick. Maynard on to punt. Time to pin the Falcons deep.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

man, our OL is just poor. plain and simply poor.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears down it inside the 20. Not Maynard's best effort, but it will do. Bears D has been sharp, holding the Falcons to two 3 and outs.

Rock Mamola said:

user-pic

it's not the OL....it's OMIYALE

He sucks, yet gets a 5 yr deal......Angelo?? hello???

Kevin O'Neil said:

user-pic

No complaints about the defense so far.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Nice play action fake to Turner and Ryan hits a short 3 yarder. Now Turner gets bottled up for a loss. Nice surge by the D-line. Marcus Harrison the first to get back there.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Great D, they're amped up!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ryan evades the pass rush, but Matty Ice can't connect on an open chance. Hester back again. WOW! That was a bomb of a punt, but he outkicked his coverage. Hester with a nice return into Falcons territory with a 32 yard return.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler on play action hits Bennett down to the 23. Nice play! No mistakes now. Let's go! And that ends the first quarter dominated by the Bears everywhere but on the scoreboard.

Mike Burzawa said:

Bears open the 2nd at the 23 yards line. Knox seems to hang on for the TD! Let's see the replay here. Looks like he got two feet down. Don't be surprised to see a challenge here. Nope. TOUCHDOWN BEARS!!!!

Kevin O'Neil said:

Mike Burzawa said:

Knox needs to work on his ball security in the end zone. Falcons take over at the 23. Alex Brown jumps offsides on 2nd down to give the Falcons and 2nd and 1. Holding on the Falcons will back them up - 2nd and 11. Ryan hits Gonzo for a pickup of about 10. 3rd and 1 coming up. Tillman was matched up on him. Looks like they gave him the first down. Generous spot. Turner met in the hole. He fumbles, but Ryan is there to cover it up.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

great D again! but Matt Ryan seems a little wild right now. We better run up the score b4 he settles down...

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

I agree. Ryan looks way out of sync. Time to take advantage!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Roach tried to pick it up instead of just falling on it. Ryan tests the middle again, but he's almost picked offby Danieal Manning. 3rd and 16 coming up. Ryans airs it out but can't connect. He doesn't look sharp early. Nice pressure again. Who needs Gaines Adams? Hester back to receiver this one. Fair caught at the 28. Bears set to take over with just over 12 minutes in the 2nd.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

**sigh**

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

ARGH!!! is more like it. What is it with Cutler under the bright lights?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears take over with an end around to Hester. He gains 6 running around left end. Forte is smashed in the backfield. He tries to spin away, but nothing doing. Omiyale got owned on that. 3rd and 5 coming. Forte split out wide. Knox with a key block to spring Forte for a first down. Cutler tries to go deep, but he's picked off again! Who was he throwing to? That was an awful pass.

Mike Burzawa said:

Defense needs to pick up Cutler. Just when you thought we were gaining some momentum. Norwood gains 7 but brought down by Payne. Just under 10 minutes in the 2nd. Atlanta goes no huddle. Turner with a 1st down on a little fake. Roddy White gets loose for a TD on a blown coverage. Bears looked awful on that play.

Rock Mamola said:

user-pic

Finally throw one to Roddy White....= TD

Maybe they should put Bowman on him.....jk

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Knox finds some running room on the return. Bears take over at the 37. Cutler hands to Forte for little gain. The crowd is getting into it. Time to silence them. 2nd and 9. Play action pass to Des Clark, but it doesn't fool anyone. 3rd and 9. Crowd going nuts. Cutler slips the rush and converts and 3rd down to Hester down the field. Pace pancakes John Abraham. Nice! Cutler can't slip the rush that time. Mike Peterson brings him down by the jersey at the 50. 2nd and 13. Delay to Forte to pick up about 3 yards. I didn't like that play at all. 3rd and 10. 5:29 left in the 2nd quarter and Cutler takes a time out. Bears with only 1 left in the half.

Rock Mamola said:

user-pic

It's a shame that Cutler's picks are overshadowing a good overall effort by the Bears' D.

Let's hope it's close by half.....Bears have been awesome in second halves this year.

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/rock-report/

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler with a bomb to Knox down to the 12. Just out of bounds. Rookie couldn't get his feet down. Maynard to punt. He takes it with a running start and just steps out of bounds or else it would have gone all the way. WHEW! That was close.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Falcons are starting to pick up some momentum. Ryan hits the fullback for a first down and then Norwood takes it outside for 5. 2nd and 5 from the 46. He's close to a first down. 3rd and short. Falcons go no-huddle and Ryan dives for the first. No huddle is tough to keep up with for me as well as the Bears. Norwood gets a dump off to take it down to the 32. Ryan checks off. Hits Turner in the left flat for another first down.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ryan keeps checking down. Dink and dunking the Falcons down the field. 2 minute warning as the Falcons are driving.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Is it just me, or are the Bears completely incapable of making adjustments? I see this being all Atlanta the rest of the way out.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

when they were huddling up we were doing fine, the no-huddle is tough to adjust to though. Now if Cutler would stop throwing picks!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Falcons inside the 20. Turner takes it up the middle. It will be close to a first down. 3rd and short coming up. LET'S GO D! HOLD!!!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ryan and the Falcons take a time out. 1:15 left in the half. A little trickeration with a fake sneak. Bears were on top of it, but couldn't bring down Snelling. First and goal Falcons. Holding on the Falcons nullifies a TD. WHEW!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Lovie and crew had better make some adjustments over the half. It's becoming obvious they have no strategy for dealing with the no-huddle.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Hopefully we're just down 3 at the half.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Where was the coverage on that one? Come on D! Roddy White hauls it in for a short gain and gets out of bounds. 0:21 left from the 14 yard line. Another flag. Offsetting penalties. 2nd and goal again. Another dump across the middle. Bears smother Finneran at the 10 and the Falcons are forced to use a time out.

Rock Mamola said:

user-pic

Bears have been very good adjusting in second halves....we'll see if it continues.

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/rock-report/

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Bears lose...

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ryan hits a wide open Tony Gonzalez for a TD. That drive just picked the Bears apart. Falcons go up 7 with 0:04 left. At least they have to kick to the Bears again before the half.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I hate that prevent D, where'd our blitz go?

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

All a "prevent" does is prevent a win.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Yahoo! predicted that Cutler would have a passer rating above 100 and the Bears would lose. It looks like they'll be half-right.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

dude, it's half-time and we're only down a TD and we start with the ball. Get a grip, man! It ain't over...

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

that's Lovie for you...when it matters, he's wusses out, stupid prevent D. that whole drive was against the prevent D. dink...dunk...dink...TD!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Time for some half time adjustments Lovie!

Rock Mamola said:

user-pic

7 rushes by Forte.....they're gonna leave it all on Cutler to win this game. Just don't think he can do it with the talent at WR he's got.

-Rock

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/rock-report/

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

you can't put those picks on the WR's. Those were on Cutler.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears need to mix it up more. No recipe for success with only 7 rushes. Wonder if they're trying to protect Forte since only Wolfe backing him up with no AP.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

SInce Lovie is calling all the defensive plays, this season is really calling him out. The D has been virtually non-existent. After a good start, the D just fell apart once the Falcons went to the no-huddle.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Lovie and the coaches needs to do a better job adjusting on the fly. They got owned to end that half.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

As good as the defense looked to start the half, that's how bad they looked to end it. Ugh!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Once again, the Bears are embarrassing themselves on national TV. Why can't they ever win high-profile games?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

They haven't embarrassed themselves...yet. Cutler doesn't like bright lights.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

There was no "prevent". They simply reverted to a base defence because they couldn't handle the no-huddle. This needs to be corrected for the second half.

Brian Moore said:

user-pic

Let's hope the Bears rediscover Forte and the running game at the half. Can't rely on a Cutler who is prone to picks and a bunch of No. 2 wide receivers

Spanky said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

No problems yet...Bears are looking decent! GO BEARS!!

ChicagoKirk said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

So all it takes is a hurry up offense or no huddle to beat the Bears Lovie D? How many times and years do I have to listen to the announcers talk about the Bears safeties being out of position? And how many times do I have to listen to announcers talk about how creative and tricky the opposing offensive and/or defensive coordinator are? You never hear those words about our DC or OC and have not for years!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Running a no huddle isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff. That being said, Bears need to adjust to it on the fly, not wait until halftime. Wonder if they keep Roach calling the plays. He looked clueless on a couple of plays.

Spanky said:

christian h. said:

I think the NBC guys got it right that the problems countering the no-huddle are partly due to inexperience at middle LB.

ChicagoKirk said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

KPOM I wonder the same thing, its been that way since at least we were playing in Urbana. Seems no matter who the head coach we suck at late games, especially night time big stage national TV games, and big games in general. Whats with the Bears as an organization they choke?

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Well, they did win some "high-profile" games in the Superbowl season.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Manning and Knox both back to receive it. Try to create a little misdirection. Falcons stayed home to prevent a toss back. Cutler takes over at the 20. Forte takes it up the middle to pick up about 4. Cutler checking off. Hits Olsen for 5 to set up 3rd and 1. Crowd is into it. QB sneak to pick up the first.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Our OL is just poor. I said it b4, I'm saying it again. Just poor.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Exactly. Has been for years. We can switch QB's until we're blue in the face, without better OL play it's for nothing.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

did you notice Omiyale miss another block on that screen?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Time to pull Omiyale. Put in Beekman. He outplayed Omiyale in the preseason.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte gets blown up in the backfield. Interior blocking is non-existent for a loss of 1. Cutler rolls right and throws on the move. Pass sailed on him a bit as he tried to hit Olsen. 3rd and long. Cutler hits Forte on the screen, but he can't quite break free. Taken down short of the marker to force a punt. Maynard with a nice punt to the 17 where it's fair-caught.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Falcons take over at the 18 yard line. Play action to Turner but it's read and Ryan has to throw it away. 2nd and 10 coming. Roddy White catches a quick hitter to the left and Tillman is there to wrap him up. 3rd and 7 from the 20. Blitz coming! Zacch Bowman with the INT! During the return, he coughs it up, but luckily Manning is there to cover it up. WHEW! Bears take over at their own 40.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

knox is scared of getting hit, did you see his reaction after he caught that ball? he just went into a shell!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

I'd rather have him do that instead of cough it up. He's just not big enough.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Cutler can only get 3- and 5-step drops because there's no blocking up front. Yuck.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

no kidding, and when Forte gets the ball? there's 3 DL/LBs in the backfield waiting for him!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Need to hit a bomb on one of those blitzes instead of the little slants.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Forte loses 3. Where is the blocking? Could we run a trap play to counter that? Cutler hits Olsen on a short pass to the right to set up 3rd and 9. Cutler hits Knox, but he can't spin away from the tackle. Falcons blitzed and Cutler played it perfectly, but Knox just not big enough to get away. Maynard punts and pins the Falcons inside the 20 again.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Turner gets the ball but the Bears are there to bottle him up. No gain. Bears jump offsides. Anthony Adams give the Falcons a 2nd and 5. Let's go! Michael Jenkins had a sure first down pass go right through his hands. 3rd and 5. Roach calling defensive audible. Ryan blitzed by Briggs and knocked down the pass. Devin Hester time. Hester can't get the corner and runs out of bounds at the Bears 40. Another drive starting with great field position.

Garrett Wolfe in the game. Cutler is picked off as he tries to hit Bennett. Ruled incomplete. Close call. WHEW! Falcons had a pick 6 otherwise. Wolfe breaks some tackles and runs for a first down. Nice run. Falcons can't handle the little Wolfe and have to call a time out.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

If that Cutler to Bennett pass had gone for a pick 6, I was set to start live blogging the Dodgers Phillies game instead.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Please don't. It's a painful game for us Dodgers fans.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The Dodgers just need a TD and a 2-pt conversion.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Wolfe takes the handoff and picks up and few more yards. 2nd and 6 coming. Bears with a little Wildcat look. Hester takes the direct snap. Picks up 5 to set up 3rd and 1. Forte back in the game and he slithers through to pick up a first down. Nice blocks by McKie and Garza.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

okay so we run to the outside and we get some yds, we run to the middle and we get stuffed, so Ron Turner says, ok, let's keep running it up the middle. NICE CATCH DEZ!

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Clarks needs to start, not Olsen

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears insist on trying to run little Wolfe up the middle. Cutler under serious pressure, but Des Clark outduels 2 Falcons defenders to pick up a big first down. Nice play! Bears take it from the 11. Cutler and Olsen can't hook up. Cutler sailed it a bit. Settle down! Forte going nowhere. 3 minutes left. Blocking was horrible. 3rd and 8. Clark with another catch. First and goal at the 1. Nice play by JC to run around a bit and create on the move. Cutler throws a lollipop on 1st down! Scary pass. Let's go! Forte tries to dive for it. Atlanta thinks they have the ball. The usual people waving in each direction. The Bears have it! WHEW!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Yet another turnover. Any more, and the Bears can open a bakery.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

3rd and goal. We need a TD here. Toss to Forte and he fumbles again. This time he loses it! WTF is going on? Horrible play calling down there!

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

That's Ron Turner for ya! At least the D should be rested up!

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

OH COME ON! What's wrong today - Bears forget to drink their milk or something??

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Need the defense to pick us up again. WTF is going on with Forte? 2 straight fumbles?

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

He has no blocking! There were 4 Falcons around him and he's just doing ALL he can to make a play.

Brian Moore said:

user-pic

^What he said. Although, I bet some think he needs to be the playmaker. Hard to do that without any room to make a play though.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Snelling the fullback takes it up the gut to give the Falcons some running room as they started at the 2. Turner with some power running to pick up the first down. Kid put some ass into it.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Need a stop on this drive, or the game is over.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The game's already over. Do you really see the Bears coming back after this?

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

That caps off a scoreless 3rd quarter. Bears offense is completely out of sorts. Turner needs to find something that works. Defense adjusted to Falcons. What's the next move/countermove?

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Jay Cutler's passer rating: 66.4

Dan in San Fran said:

user-pic

If you can't punch it in from one the yard line AND turn the ball over, you have no business playing the game

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Turner hit in the backfield but powers his way to a gain. Ryan hits Roddy White on a little rollout. Harrison with some pressure. Ryan scrambles for 8 yards. Atlanta with the ball at 38 yard line. Pisa limping on the sidelines. Bears swarm to stuff that run attempt.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I see a 98 yard drive under way. With the Vikings at 6-0, this season is going down the drain quickly.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I see it, too. The Bears have just completely given up on this game.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I, for one, think that Forte is a better back than Benson. But Benson has blockers and he's having a great season. Orton is a solid QB, not better (or worse, for that matter) then Cutler, but now he has blockers. It's the OL. Plain and simple. You're only as strong as your weakest link.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

AND Ron Turner!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

This is going to get really ugly by the time it's over.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ryan hits Snelling on a little hitch on the outside. Cutler looks miserable on the sidelines. Ryan throws it away to set up 2nd and 10. Forte sulking on the sidelines too. Ryan in the shotgun hits Jenkins. More little short passes tearing the Cover-2 apart. Bowman getting picked on again. Falcons into Bears territory. Are we going to give up another 98-yard drive? Come on D!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

At least 6, and perhaps 10 or 14 points left on the field. The Bears need to regroup fast before this season slips away from them. Meanwhile, Kyle Orton and Denver have a shot at a 6-0 start tomorrow.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Tinoisamoa on the cart. Never a good sign.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Never mind...

christian h. said:

KPOM said:

The Bears are just GIVING this game away.

Dan in San Fran said:

Mike Burzawa said:

Nice coverage by Afalava on Gonzo sets up 4th down. They eschew a long field goal attempt and Hester with the fair catch at the 2. 12 men on the field penalty gives the Falcons a first down. Inexcuseable!!!

The Bears got a break there.

Dan in San Fran said:

Whew! Let's hang on to the ball, don't throw an interception, and score a TD

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Okay, if the Falcons refuse to close the deal, the Bears better make them pay!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

This game is not going how I expected. Thought it would be more of a shootout. That's part sloppy, part defense, but mostly sloppy.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Cutler with the long run.

PKinWL said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

haha, Earl Bennett threw a better block than any of our OLinemen!

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler with a HUGE scramble to pick up 30 yards! Nice moves JC! Now throw it to the guys with the white shirts please. Cutler tries to toss it against the blitz. Hester couldn't get free from the jam. Play action but Cutler checks it down to Forte anyway. 3rd and 8. Need this one! Come on Cutler! Knox gets mugged and it's pass interference. Big gain for the Bears with 8:15 left. Bears will take over at the Falcons 38.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another stupid penalty on the Bears.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Hester slips past the jam this time, but Cutler can't connect. 2nd and 10. Wolfe in the backfield. Cutler hits Knox coming across but Pace called for the hold. Ouch! That would have gotten the Bears inside the 20.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

2nd and 20 from the 47. Olsen down the seam for a big gain! 41 yards down to the 6. 1st and goal! Let's go offense!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Don't turn it over this time, Matt.

Mike Burzawa said:

Forte looks to make amends for his fumble. Takes it up the middle inside the 5, down to the 2. Cutler takes a time out.

christian h. said:

christian h. said:

This is turning into a horror sports weekend for me. If the Bears don't pull it out, all my teams will have lost...

Dan in San Fran said:

How big are those two turnovers in the red zone now? If we had 2 FGs from those, we can still kick a FG and have the lead.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Precisely. It drives me nuts that the Bears lose through these stupid mistakes. At least the Lions are honestly bad...

Mike Burzawa said:

Bears at the 2. Olsen split out wide and can't hang on to the fade. Not fooling anyone there.

Mike Burzawa said:

Now for a defensive stop. Unfortunately, the Falcons might just close it out with another last-second field goal. Those picks and the fumble are looming really large right now.

KPOM said:

That's just about the worst thing that could have happened. They'll give those 7 points right back.

christian h. said:

Dan in San Fran said:

Mike Burzawa said:

Time to D-up! Just over 6 minutes to go .. And just as I'm typing that, special teams lets up a huge return. WTF is wrong with special teams in Atlanta. Falcons almost in field goal range. Turner takes it down to the 38 yard line. 2nd and 6. Ryan checking off. Fake toss and he throws it away. 3rd and 6. Need it now! Gonzalez hauls it in down to the 21. ARGH!

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

21-14 Falcons.

Mike Burzawa said:

Turner is smothered. Just over 4 minutes left. Ryan huts Gonzo again to set up a 1st and goal inside the 10. I'm getting sick!

christian h. said:

Best to just let them score now and save the time.

Dan in San Fran said:

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Ryan with anthother fake pitch. Throws it away again. Clock stopped with 3:10 to go. 2nd and goal. Turner up the middle for a touchdown. Cut right through the defense like they weren't even there. Horrible!

Dan in San Fran said:

user-pic

Well, at least we have more time now to score a TD....

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Oh F... this.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Even worse than losing today is that the Bears have shown the rest of the league how to beat them. Just go no-huddle and get the D completely confused.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Nice decision by Knox to run out to the 12 instead of taking the touchback.

Dan in San Fran said:

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears take over at the 12. 3 minutes to go. Time for the franchise QB to lead this team to a TD. Hester catches to pick up 6. Can't get out of bounds. Hester gets wide open and a big gainer. And he gets out of bounds. Nice play. Devin in space!

Dan in San Fran said:

What a good game this is turning out to be. Let's hope for overtime!

Mike Burzawa said:

Bears in Falcons territory. Forte picks up another first down at the Falcons 35. 2 minute warning. Charge up the paddles! CLEAR!

christian h. said:

Beating a dead horse, but without those two red zone turnovers the Bears only need a FG here...

Dan in San Fran said:

KKane said:

How many ways are the Bears going to find to lose this game? Fumbles, blown coverage, interceptions, poor blocking, horrible special teams? When will we admit that Forte is is Anthony Thomas
(good rookie year and then nothing), and Frank Omiyale is HORIBLE?

KPOM said:

Great time for a sack.

Dan in San Fran said:

KPOM said:

The penalties are just killing the Bears.

Mike Burzawa said:

Bears take a time out. Obviously 2 down territory. Cutler back to pass. Olsen gets mugged. Big play. Illegal contact is the initial call. Updated to pass interference. The difference? Serveral more yards.

christian h. said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

It's like they don't care... awful.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Those 2 turnovers are looming large.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Bears take over at the 14. Cutler's pass is batted down. Knox was wide open too. 2nd and 10. False start this time. Omiyale = Horrible game. Cutler takes the shotgun snap at the 19. Steps up in the pocket. Forte let's it go right through his hands. Offensive pass interference on Bennett. Bears are imploding here. Need this 3rd and 25.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

They wasted about 10 seconds on that play. Unfortunately they came up a yard short.

Mike Burzawa said:

user-pic

Cutler hits Bennett for 24 yards to set up the game. 4th and 1. Cutler wisely calls a timeout with 34 seconds left.

KPOM said:

KPOM said:

The Falcons didn't win tonight's game. The Bears lost it. 2 turnovers in the red zone, 2 dumb penalties by Orlando Pace, and a defense that looked completely confused the last 3 quarters of the game were just too much to overcome.

Mike Burzawa said:

Cutler can't connect with Des Clark and that's the ballgame. Ugly, ugly loss. Bears suck in prime time!

KPOM said:

Mike Burzawa said:

Mike Burzawa said:

Thanks to all for participating and see you next week as the Bears head to Cinci to face Ced and the Bungles.

PapaBear67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Boy this was a 3-phase failure. The defense stunk, refused to tackle, and couldn't fall on an early fumble. Worst special teams game in 3 years. And the offense? Abysmal. Forte was crap. Cutler looked like Orton/Rex. And Omiyale should be cut in favor of a jockstrap.

KPOM said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The Bears did plenty of bungling tonight.

PapaBear67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I agree with Christian - this loss puts them in such a huge hole for the wildcard, and it doesn't look like the Vikings are ever gonna lose. The Bears can't play the Lions every week, you know.

CoachA2525 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Every notice how BUM Turner's offensive plays seemed to be designed to only go to one person? That last play was called for the TE. Even if he catches it, he is still short of first down. Why the H$!! do you not throw it in the endzone there? Orton 5-0 in Denver and says it is night and day in terms of offense. TURNER MUST GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rumplestiltskin said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Because Tuner is an idiot. He screwed the University of Illinois football program. How does anybody think he is smart enough to be a offensive coordinator for a professional team? He needs to be shown the door and Lovie right along with him. Neither is worth their weight in horse dung.

Bearfan4decades said:

BS!!!!

Bearsfan67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Fire PACE! That bum stunk it up like a high school rookie! He cost us the game. A lousy performance overall by the whole team but his two big blunders cost the bears a chance to win. He looked like a big clueless oaf.

PapaBear67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Turner's playcalling on that drive with Forte's 2 fumbles was just terrible. Matt was running into a wall of defenders on both plays - that's never gonna work. Why not try a TE fade to one of the corners, or do a TE delay? Blame the players, yes, but the Bears were blatantly outcoached by Atlanta.

Bearsfan67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I must agree. We were out coached. The ViQUEENS will be tough to catch unless they just fall apart or suffer some injuries like everyone else has so far.

Bearsfan67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

This bears team has a few standouts but not enough overall talent to win the SB let alone make the playoffs. With Cutler at the helm we should see some quality players looking to come to Chicago in some trades. They will be a great team just not this year. I hope I'm wrong. Maybe they can do it. Lovie needs to pull a Ditka and start grabbing face masks and chewing people out. They deserves a good chewing out.

Rumplestiltskin said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

How much longer are we Bears fans going to have to endure Ron Turner and Lovie Smith. Since the Bears can't sack Ryan, maybe Bears management can sack Turner and Smith. I have been a Bears fan since !963 and this is the sorriest bunch of losers I have ever seen in the Orange and Blue. I am about ready to change my allegiance to Green Bay. I am so sick of that bunch of know nothing coaches it make me want to puke.

PapaBear67 said:

Hello from Denver, Cutlerites!

How you liking your JayBaby now, hmmmm?

Big numbers for your "Pro Bowl" (snicker!) QB and another loss for the team.

Welcome to Hell, and get used to it.

Bearsfan67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Don't worry. Orton will do as he always does. He'll fall apart and lose critical games. Your bragging up way too soon. Tonight's loss wasn't all on Cutler. He's on a new team and it will take time. He slapped the Broncos around in the last preseason game. It may not have counted but it was sweet none the less. I don't expect Chicago to do well tbis year but I think it's a safe bet that Denver won't see the SB either. Big mouth.

Bearsfan67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Yoyr just jealous that Cutler left. If it didn't bother you you wouldn't have bothered with the attack on Cutler. You want him back and you know it. You know Orton is NOT a franchise QB. A nice guy. Yes. Francise. NO WAY.

PapaBear67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Another problem - the defense is not content with a tackle for loss, or a plain fumble recovery or INT. When they get a guy hemmed in the backfield, they go for the "strip" and he gains 4-5 yards. When they see a fumble on the ground, Briggs doesn't fall on it he tries to scoop it up and score - costing them the fumble. And the INTs were both fumbled and one lost 18 yards because of it. The Falcons played into the Bears hands, but the Bears D was more looking for the big play instead of taking what was given to them.

Bearsfan67 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

PapaBear67, Very well said. I couldn't agree more. You take what is given and then go from there.
