Mark Anderson: Another Black Eye for Lovie and Jerry

The Other Guy

Mark Anderson never came close to the productivity of his rookie year.

The Bears cut underachieving defensive end Mark Anderson on Tuesday.  To take his roster spot, they signed former Saints defensive end Charles Grant, a guy who had recently been released by the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks.

There's a new sheriff in town and he's not messing around this season.  It's amazing how fearing for their jobs has instilled a sense of accountability on this team and with this regime.

Anderson has never reached the lofty heights of his 12-sack rookie year performance yet Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo have tried to pawn him off as an elite player while pushing solid performers like Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye out of the way.

What's most frustrating about the Anderson situation is how he has been handed the starting defensive end job and never lived up to the responsibility that goes along with being a starter.  It's this sense of entitlement that has plagued so many of the Bears' draft picks.  Mark Anderson is symbolic of all that is wrong with this regime.

Anderson joins the looong list of bust-out Jerry Angelo draft picks.  Sure, he was only a 5th round pick.  Of course he had a hand in getting to the Super Bowl XLI, but what has he done since?  He is a role player at best.  Always was, always will be. What has he done to give anyone the sense that he was a starting defensive end in this league?  What has he done since 2006?  Then again, what has Lovie Smith done since then?

The list of bad Jerry Angelo draft picks far exceeds his good picks.  For every Lance Briggs, Peanut Tillman and Johnny Knox, I can give you 3 times as many busts with the likes of Michael Okwo, Dan Bauzin, Jarron Gilbert and Michael Haynes heading the list.

Anderson's failure is further indictment of Lovie Smith's failures as head coach and the de facto defensive coordinator.  Lovie has continued to put his guys ahead of proven players only to have it blow up in his face.  Why did the Bears trade Chris Harris?  Why did the Bears let go of Alex Brown?  To make room for Lovie's guys.  Hopefully, Lovie and Jerry will get moved to make room for real management.
