Lovie Smith Admits Chris Harris "The One that Got Away"

Chris Harris is back with the Bears and will be counted on to anchor the Bears' secondary.

Back in April the Bears righted one of the biggest wrongs in recent memory, trading away Chris Harris after Super Bowl XLI.  Lovie Smith made an admission of sorts and came clean about the trade, saying that Harris shouldn't have been traded away:

"(Harris) should be happy about being back," Smith said. "He probably never should have gone."

I guess it's better late than never.  As Brad Biggs points out, Lovie played a big part in showing Harris the door after the Super Bowl season:

Smith played a role in Harris exiting following the team's appearance in Super Bowl XLI. The Bears coach was behind the team's trade with the Washington Redskins for Adam Archuleta after the former star in St. Louis was a free-agent failure. Smith also was high on Kevin Payne, a safety drafted in the fifth round in 2007 from the same school as Harris, Louisiana-Monroe. What the club said was that Payne would be an upgrade on Harris.

What's next? Will Lovie admit that they never should have pushed Ron Rivera out the door so he could promote his buddy Bob Babich?  Lovie's defense has been on steady decline ever since Chico was ushered out of Chicago.

With the Bears playing the Chargers this week, it will be curious how things shake out considering the ties to Rivera and Chargers head coach Norv Turner and ousted brother Ron.  It's just a preseason game, but the Chargers always seem to go guns blazing whenever they match up with the Bears.  Preseason or not, it's game week!
