Lawsuit: Not hired by Wirtz Beverage because of race, age

Three men have filed a lawsuit against Wirtz Beverage Illinois, which does business as Judge & Dolph, for alleged race and age discrimination in hiring.

Craig McCarrell, Joseph Duplessis and Nathaniel Chavis Jr. say that they worked for Union Beverage Co. before it was acquired by Judge & Dolph and when they applied for positions with Judge & Dolph, they were not hired because they are black.  The complaint states that almost all former Union Beverage employees hired by Judge & Dolph are white.

The plaintiffs are also suing Union Beverage Co. because when they worked there, they were segregated to work in the "central" or "metro" division that was all black, according to the complaint.

Nathaniel Chavis Jr. is also suing for age discrimination because he says he was not hired by Judge & Dolph because he is too old and that almost all former Union Beverage employees hired by Judge & Dolph are younger than him.

Teacher sues Chicago Public Schools for race, age discrimination

A former teacher at Amundsen High School and the Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville is suing the Chicago Board of Education for race and age discrimination.

Antoinette Barnes, who was a computer information technology teacher at the military academy from 2000 to 2008 and worked at Amundsen for eight years prior to that, is described in the complaint as "[someone] whose race is Black and age is over forty (40) years."

Barnes says that in June of 2008 she was informed that her position had been closed and she became a city-wide reassigned teacher for the next school year and a cadre teacher the following year.  According to the complaint, in June or July of 2009, a computer information technology position was again opened at the Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville and Barnes applied but she was not even granted an interview.  Instead, the Board hired a "Caucasian teacher, believed to be in her thirties" with fewer qualifications and fewer years of service, the complaint states.

Barnes also alleges age discrimination in job fairs conducted by the Board where younger teachers are granted early entrance with different colored wristbands from the older applicants and their resumes stamped with different colored ink.  The complaint states "When Plaintiff and other older teachers are granted access to the job fairs, the younger teachers are on their way out of the fair."

Man sues Starwood Hotels for age and sex discrimination, called a "vagina"

A 67 year old Glen Ellyn man who worked as a banquet manager for Starwood Hotels is suing the organization for age and sex discrimination.

Bernardo Sanhueza Campoy says that he worked for Starwood for nine years without incident until January of this year when his new supervisors, Tim Ohrn and Audiel Alanis, began harassing and micromanaging him in a manner not afforded to similarly situated younger and female coworkers.

The complaint states that Ohrn repeatedly asked Campoy when he was going to retire.

Campoy also says he received derogatory emails from an email address that appeared to be related to the Sheraton, such as one that stated "Your wife has bigger balls...than you.  You have the vagina! You live off your father in-law."

Former Calumet Park cop alleges discrimination by black police chief

A former Calumet Park police officer who is white is suing the municipality for discrimination he says he was subjected to by the black chief of police.

Plaintiff Mark Groszek asserts in the complaint that, since defendant Mark A. Davis became the chief of police in 2002, plaintiff and other white police officers have been "subjected to various forms of harassment by Chief Davis in an effort to get them to quit or to compile enough negative evidence against them to justify their discharge."

In May of 2006, Groszek suffered an assault while conducting his duties as a police officer and, over the course of the next two years, experienced pain and panic attacks that made him miss time at work, the complaint states.  The complaint further states that Chief Davis yelled at plaintiff, called him "mental" to another police officer and informed him that he would be terminated.

Groszek is suing for race discrimination, disability discrimination, age discrimination, retaliation and fraud.
