Former Evanston Police Cadet: Fired over raspy voice

A former Evanston police cadet says he was terminated because of his "raspy sounding voice."

Reginald Johnson says that in September of 2008, he was hired by the City of Evanston as an employee in its police department and was assigned as a cadet in its training program.

During training, Johnson - who the complaint describes as suffering from what can be called a "hoarse or raspy sounding voice" - was singled out and asked to shout commands to a trainer from down the street, the complaint states. According to the complaint, the purpose of the exercise was to determine from what distance the trainer could hear the commands being shouted by Johnson.

The complaint states that Johnson was then informed that he was terminated due to the results of the exercise, that the exercise was not conducted pursuant to any written guidelines and none of the other recruits were required to undergo a similar test.

Johnson is seeking, among other things, to be restored to his former position.
