An inmate in the Cook County Jail is suing the sheriff after she slipped and fell on grease while working in the kitchen of the jail.
Toshiba Williams says that, while she was an inmate and assigned to the kitchen as a laborer at the Cook County Jail, she was carrying a large pot of hot oatmeal when she slipped and fell on an accumulation of grease on the floor.
The pot of hot oatmeal fell on her face, burning her in the face and causing severe and permanent burns, the complaint states.
Williams asserts that the sheriff and his employees and agents were negligent when they "required Toshiba, who is less than 5 feet tall and under 100 pounds, to lift a large and heavy pot of hot oatmeal."

How do people manage to file these suits? I tore my miniscus in my knee and have swollen disks in my neck that I received on the job and had to pay for treatments out of my own pocket and still two years later I am still in constant pain. I had to quit my job and get a different less paying job because of the pain and continued chance of further damage. I didn't sue the employer. Perhaps I should have?

Dale, since you say you got the injuries at work, that would be workers' comp., and you can't sue.
While this guy can sue (and apparently found an attorney to take the case), we can only hope that any recovery is garnished for restitution.

I am a law school graduate (went to the same one at which our Esteemed President later taught). What are your credentials? You apparently know nothing about Workers' Comp. Law. I edited an encyclopedia on it.

Also, as this blog manifestly proves, anyone can sue. That doesn't mean that the complaint alleges a cause of action.

You can still sue unless statue of limitation has happen please seek legal advice soon.

There is only one valid point made by anthony bozeman: If you are injured, see an attorney and find out what your rights actually are. Don't take the word of any anonymous commenter on a blog, not even me. This is even more unreliable than Wikipedia.
