Chicago Sun-Times Sued for Libel

A Chicago couple are suing the Chicago Sun-Times for printing a story that they say contained false statements and harmed their reputations.

According to the complaint, on July 11, 2008, the Chicago Sun-Times printed a story about plaintiffs Kenny Smith, Karen Smith and the Chicago Better Housing Association (CBHA) stating, among other things, the following:

- That Kenny Smith was an Obama campaign volunteer who "failed to deliver on a plan to create a botanic garden."  Kenny Smith asserts that he never volunteered for the Obama campaign, that the project was a project of the CBHA and he volunteered for the CBHA.

- That CBHA is Kenny's Smith's non-profit group.  The complaint states CBHA was incorporated in 1994 and Smith only volunteers for the organization.

- That $65,000 of grant money went to Kenny Smith's wife.  The complaint states that the money went to KD Contractors, Karen Smith's company, who won the bid because it was the lowest of three bids submitted.
