Here's another wrongful death suit filed today. This one haunts me a little in particular because I walk by this particular location several times a day.
It's the Chicago Police Department station in the 14th District, at 2150 N. California Avenue. You know, the one right across from the California blue line stop.
According to the complaint, a man was brought to the lockup at the 14th District, even though he "exhibited abnormal and/or suicidal behavior." Within a few hours of being placed in his jail cell, the man hung himself.

I don't mean to sound callous, but about half the people we ever get into a lock up "exhibit abnormal and/or suicidal behavior." We go to great lengths to prevent something like this from happening, and it's horrible and tragic when it does. Did you know that most hangings in jail/prison cells occur from a height of less than 3'? A prisoner will find something to tie themselves off on, typically a piece of plumbing or metal bed frame, and then kneel or lie down until the ligature pulls tight. Depending on the age and layout of the cell, it might not even be visible at first, and it only takes a couple of minutes to do it.
Also, I'm curious--are you going to be tracking these cases and letting us know how they turn out?

Even if about half the people exhibit that kind of behavior, how long are they left alone? What is the protocol for having someone in your custody? How often are prisoners left alone? I mean I know it does not take long to choke to death, but one in custody, how are they monitored? Walkthroughs, cameras? How far are they away from an actual person who could or would help them?
