Rogers Park's new music venue Mayne Stage announces opening acts

I cover music and movies for metromix.com, with stories appearing in RedEye. Sometimes with a big smiley picture.

The Morse Theatre didn't last long. Thankfully, the Rogers Park music venue at 1328 W. Morse Ave. is re-opening in mid-June as Mayne Stage, and we now know some of the acts who will be performing there.

Is the lineup so far totally awesome? No. Things kick off June 18-19 with a kids' show led by Bob Odenkirk ("Mr. Show"), which would probably be great if it weren't for kids. Other confirmed acts include Ann Hampton Callaway (July 2-3), local staple Ron Hawking (July 8-10) and Michael McDermott (July 17). So I can't say I'm super excited about the artists so far, but it's great to have the venue back up and running as another stage for local and national artists. Hopefully shows will skew closer to "interesting folk/jazz/rock" and farther from "dull, generic music for the 55+ demo."

What do you think of Mayne Stage? Do you think it will be more successful than the Morse Theatre?

Not if this is the kind of 'booking' we can look forward to. The 'old' Morse Theatre kicked off it's opening with Taj Mahal, followed by artists/groups like Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, Seigal-Schwall Blues Band, etc.

Thanks, mcl. That definitely shows the contrast so far. Hopefully Mayne Stage will add some more desirable acts to the schedule. Anyone in particular you're hoping for?
