Berghoff's Waitstaff donates tips to Bear Necessities
Bear Necessities is one of the organizations I'm raising money for with Endure To Cure. This Saturday you can benefit them directly just by going out to eat.
Where I've Been
I apologize. I have been woefully negligent in my posting duties. It's not that I've been just sitting around; in fact, I've been busier than ever.
Fundraising By The Foot
Jeannette Kravitz is a brilliant, passionate, compassionate, and beautiful woman. She's made it her personal mission to change the world through children, bridging cultural gaps, and protecting the environment. I'm fortunate enough to know her, and she and her husband and partner Randy believe strongly in what Jay and I and the whole Endure To Cure team are doing.
Great event tonight benefiting young cancer survivors
I'm raising money for Endure To Cure to help with pediatric cancer research, treatment, and care. SAMFund provides support when they've survived. Tonight there's a great event at Joe's to help them in this endeavor. Cornhole for Cancer is only $35 in advance and $40 at the door and includes admission, entry into the bags tournament, and an open bar.
Fly Me To Africa - Please!
It's hard to believe that I first spoke with Jay about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro last December. At that time we planned on climbing in June. When we originally checked flights they were around $1600. We were very close to getting a flight sponsor, but it fell through and by the time we knew they were up to $2200. So, we pushed it back to August.
Fundraiser for Endure To Cure Tonight
Raising money for Endure To Cure, which in turn goes to organizations like Bear Necessities and Children's Memorial Hospital, is the reason behind this blog and the climb. Tonight I'm hosting a fun event that not only helps me reach my goal of $20,000, but also lets you walk away with some pretty cool goodies.
We'll be enjoying unlimited beer, wine, soda, and a bbq buffet at Sheffield's, which was voted one of the best bars in America by Esquire magazine, for a whopping three hours! If you just want to enjoy that tickets are only $25 in advance. To get a swag bag full of goodies from Chicago businesses donate a mere $5; for a deluxe bag, donate $10.
As a bonus, you can get $5 off if you use code chicagonow. Fun people, bbq & beer, and a good cause - Register now!
So who's in the goodie bags?
Chicago Chocolate Tours
Buca di Beppo
Bonsoiree
Zanies (deluxe)
Drinks Over Dearborn (deluxe)
We'll Clean Hand Car Wash
And much more!
An Accidental Purpose
This morning I mentioned that my hiking boots are like wearing dumbbells on my feet. I should have also mentioned they're big clown shoes that seem to put me into another zip code. I swear if you look at my profile when I'm wearing them I look like a big "L". There's a perfectly good reason for this, of course: there has to be room in the toe box so my little piggies don't hit the end, and there also has to be room for the five hundred layers of socks I'll need to keep them warm. Still, it makes walking rather difficult.
Training - for real this time
This morning I ran. Actually, it was more like walking punctuated by brief bouts of jogging. The good news is I saw that it was 43 degrees, grabbed my ski cap, and was out the door by 7:27. The bad news is I couldn't even jog one lap around tiny little Palmer Square.
From Steaming To Freezing
Since it's a volcano, Mt. Kilimanjaro isn't part of a range and instead soars from the surrounding bushland. That means for the climber, getting from base camp to the summit is basically like going from Summer to Winter in five days. So it's pretty much just like October in Chicago, except we'll have half the oxygen and be carrying the equivalent of three laptops and walking uphill several miles each day.
Who Are We Helping?
The reason behind Endure To Cure (E2C) and why I'm climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is to raise money for pediatric cancer research, treatment, and patient care. While that sounds good, and it is, it's even more meaningful if you know where that money actually goes.
Training - One Step At A Time
When people find out I'm climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the questions I'm asked most frequently are "how do you train for that" and "how's the training going"?
Happy Feet
Carrie Bradshaw may wear Manolo Blahnik's and Jimmy Choo's, but I guarantee my feet are much happier than hers will ever be. In the end, prettier, too. But that's only because I have the best taken-care-of-most-sponsored-feet in Chicago, in Illinois, and possibly the surrounding states (that I know of, anyway!).
Now What?
Now that I'd made the decision to leave my comfort zone, I learned very quickly just how far I'd have to go.
Only 19,340 Feet To Go
19,340 feet. That's how tall Mt. Kilimanjaro is, give or take a couple. Located near the eastern coast of Africa in Tanzania, it's the highest free-standing mountain in the world. And I'm going to climb it.
