I'd rather juggle a million projects that keep me busy than manage one day-in-day-out job. So, I'm always running! And it's all with a smile, of course.

Real Urban BBQ in Highland Park

From Chicago Q and RUB BBQ to The Smoke Daddy and Smoque BBQ, Chicago has plenty of barbecue restaurants. We all know it's hot dinner du jour. But how much are we fooling ourselves into "loving" gastro barbecue? Do you really love the trend of eating frou frou bbq in an upscale setting? My guess is that a little part of you would rather still be eating falling-off-the-bone ribs with your hands and a pile of wet ones. No dress code required. No need to be shy digging in. And comfort food sides are required. Have no worries, yet another barbecue restaurant has opened in the Chicago area, and this one may not be just like the others. Real Urban BBQ in Highland Park officially opened yesterday, November 12, with a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony.

From 14-hour smoked and sliced brisket to 12-hour smoked pulled pork, everything is made fresh in-house and prepared upon order. Housemade sauces and rubs to boot; you'll need a few piles of wet ones for this. Sides like homemade potato pancakes, homestyle mac 'n cheese and sugar biscuits (yes, little hot biscuits covered in sugar and butter) will have you so stuffed, you may have to make one trip for BBQ and another just for sides.

Owner Jeff Shapiro knows his BBQ. He's had a hand in the restaurant business for most of his life, and he recently spent some time traveling through the Midwest, Carolinas, Kansas, Kentucky and Tennessee, even competing in the BBQ circuit and bringing home a few trophies.

I know, I know, Highland Park is a little bit of a hike, and if you're like me - without a car - why would you haul all the way up there? Because it's worth it. Plus, they have an amazing carryout business, with full meals to take home and curb-side service.

So give it a try - Sunday dinner perhaps? - and I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts!
