Chicago's Green Yoga Studios

Since
Earth Day is this
Thursday, April 22, I thought it'd be cool to dedicate all my blogs this week to healthy eco-friendly living, eating and socializing all around Chicago. Last week I started by highlighting upcoming
Earth-friendly workouts and fitness events taking place this week.
If you can't make it to any of the special events going on, there are still places to practice yoga or take a group exercise class that celebrate kindness to the Earth everyday of the year. Here's a listing of Chicago's green yoga studios and fitness centers.
Soulistic Studio Spa: I love that
Soulistic has something for everyone. At this eco-friendly West Town space, you can you get a facial and massage after a tough cardio bosu or pilates class. Soulistic features low-energy lighting, an infrared sauna (gets hot but uses less energy than a hair dryer) and equipment that uses eco-friendly materials and renewable resources. The studio is a member of the Green Yoga Association and use natural and organic skin care lines for spa services.
YogaNow Gold Coast: There's no word yet on if the new
YogaNow North will be eco-friendly, but
YogaNow Gold Coast definitely wins for greenest yoga studio in Chicago. The studio features bamboo floors, walls insulated with old denim, recycled doors with an eco-friendly stain, walls plastered with a mix of clay, straw, sand casein and mica and energy-efficient lighting. YogaNow also uses green natural rubber mats from local company Natural Fitness and has a steam room and sauna for use before or after class (although I don't think they're eco-friendly, it's still a nice touch).
Moksha: A few years ago,
Moksha dramatically reduced their carbon footprint by printing fewer class schedules and workshops flyers, using natural cleaning supplies and recycling old yoga mats. These simple changes serve as a good example of how we can all take baby steps for a greener planet!
Think this list should be longer? Leave a comment and let me know if I'm missing any studios or gyms and if you're not sure, speak up and ask a manager or owner where you practice yoga or workout if they have an eco-friendly practices.
