Adjusting my yoga routine for a 5K run
I am not a runner, but for the second year in a row, I find myself gearing up for a 5K. Last year it was
Run for the Cheetahs, this year it's Chicago's inaugural
Earth Day 5K Run/Walk.
I have to admit that I'm pretty excited about this race. Well, not for the actual run itself, but to support a friend who is gearing up for the Chicago marathon and another who is an avid runner. They're both always up to take a yoga class with me, but when it's time for a run, I am suddenly nowhere to be found! Last year, Laurie even
mall-walked most of the Cheetah race with me after did something funky to my knee. So, this time around, I want to cross the finish line with her going full-speed!
For added motivation, there's the pair of running shoes Nike hooked me up with that I've maybe worn three times (shameful) and a race for the earth is something I can totally get behind!
Taking place on
Saturday, April 24 in Logan Square and Humboldt Park, the race celebrates the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, raises money for local schools and brings together Chicago's green community. The race concludes with an award ceremony, raffle drawing and Green Living expo, featuring some of my favorite eco businesses like,
Mindful Metropolis,
Great Taste Cafe and
I-Go Car Sharing.
All in all, I think it's going to be a fun, healthy, family-friendly day, but I must admit that I'm a little concerned about my poor knee. I KNOW it's just a 5K, but since I don't run, I'll be consulting a few personal trainers, asking advice from more experienced runners and bloggers and modifying my yoga routine to include more runner-friendly poses.
Anyone else up for a month of running and yoga training?

Yeah for running! I will practice w/ya... maybe. I've been meaning to try the equinox treadmill running class. Maybe we could it it together, that way we could encourage each other.

Laurie, you are awesome! I'm hoping we won't have to mall walk it (did you watch that video? CREEPY), but no guarantees!

I hate running as well, but I need the exercise and I'm sure it would be fun.
