What is Thai Massage?

Regular massage and bodywork can relieve stress, improve immunity, aid digestion, relax tight muscles, prevent injury and even aid in sleeping, so I'm always suggesting my hardworking friends and family treat themselves to an occasional rub-down. But I know that in these economic times, finding the extra cash for massage is easier said than done, but one way to take care of tight muscles and stay on a budget is the Chicago School of Thai Massage

Because it's only been popular in the US for the last ten years, Thai Massage is considered a newer, exotic form of bodywork. Often called the "lazy man's yoga," a Thai session generally takes place on a large padded mat on the floor. Therapists use a mix of massage, yoga, acupressure and stretching to open the body physically and energetically. Unlike other forms of massage, you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes and although you're relaxed, you're fully involved during a treatment, breathing and communicating with the therapist as they gently contort and knead your body.

Thai massage is nothing like any other form of bodywork and it can be really revealing as to where you hold tightness and blockages in your body. I had no idea my hamstrings were so tight  until my therapist stretched my leg out and used her foot to apply pressure deep into the back of my thigh.

Sessions can be done in an hour, but because many positions are held for a long time to allow the body to open up and the muscles to relax, most sessions are 90-120 minutes. A Thai massage session is pure heaven, although a bit pricey when compared to your run-of-the-mill deep tissue massage. But thankfully, the Chicago School of Thai Massage offers 90-minute sessions for just $65, about 50% less than what you'd pay at a spa! Started in 2008 by Paul Fowler and Paul Weitz, the school wanted to bring together Chicago's Thai therapist while also providing students with a well-rounded understanding of the body and how Thai massage works (the 6-month curriculum includes yoga, meditation and the study of Western anatomy and energetic anatomy).

Both Fowler and Weitz are amazing and very passionate men. Just watch the video of Paul Weitz above talking about the roots of Thai massage and you'll see how knowledgeable he is about the ancient therapy.

When you're ready to try Thai massage, contact the Chicago School of Thai Massage for info about free sessions, open houses and the student clinics, which run near the end of each 6-month training program.

I love the Pauls and the awesome school that they've created. Hopefully I can get over there soon for a Massage, and I think it's great that it's a well rounded program like you said. I read on their site a while back that I think it incorporates Buddhist principles as well. If only I could do a work-exchange program with them for the schooling :D

Maya, just last Friday I just went to twice-yearly open house at the Chicago School of Thai Massage. I know Paul Weitz personally, and he's awesome -- so knowledgeable, and a great sense of humor! He teaches yoga at a couple studios around town, too.
