Workshops: Take your yoga practice to the next level

Yoga workshops are great for deepening your practice, mastering poses that have always eluded you and diving deeper into yogic philosophy or culture. I've had the opportunity to take amazing workshops at studios and conferences and I always leave with a new perspective, more confidence and even more passion for practicing yoga. I've learned how to really wring out my spine in a twist workshop with Natasha Rizopoulos, participated in a detox vinyasa flow class led by Seane Corn and realized that I was actually pushing my hips forward too much in Camel pose thanks to Yogaview's Quinn Kearney.
But you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars at a weekend conference to take your yoga practice to the next level. Almost every weekend, studios around the city offer amazing workshops with local and/or traveling guest teachers. Mark your calendars, because here's a selection of the best workshops coming up over the next month. Added tip, book a spa service after your workshop, keep your phone off and create a personal day of zen.

Sara Strother
Anusara Fundamentals. Easily one of the fasted growing styles of yoga, Anusara is a "feel-good" style of yoga that celebrates goodness in all things with lots of challenging (yet invigorating) heart-opening poses. In this workshop, Sara Strother breaks down the methodology of Anusara yoga and leads an anusara-inspired class. Saturday, January 30, 10am at Moksha Riverwest. $30.

Alie McManus
Discovering Balance in Inversions. There's been plenty of time in workshops when something as simple as moving my foot a different way or distributing my weight has made a world of difference in certain poses, so I can't recommend this inversion workshop with Alie McManus enough. The workshop starts with a focus on finding your center and playing around with balance before moving on to the often elusive and sometimes frightening inversions. A variety of inversions will be discussed, demoed and practiced, so even if you can't get into full headstand, you'll leave with a more confident outlook on tackling these types of poses. Saturday, January 30, 12:30pm at Yogaview Elston. $35-$40
Yin Yoga Workshop. If you're looking to really get deep into poses, truly stretch and relax the muscles and experience a different practice, try the Yin Yoga workshop with Robyn Okrant. In Yin Yoga poses are held for a very long time to truly get deep into the body. Not to be confused with Gentle or Restorative Yoga, Yin Yoga goes beyond the muscle to truly create space and energy within the body. This might be especially good for those of us who practice very physical styles of yoga, like challenging vinyasa, ashtanga or bikram. Wednesday, February 3, 6:30pm at Bloom Yoga Studio. $20-$25.
Bikram Posture Clinic. Sure, you're listening to the instructor's directions, but are you really in the pose correctly? Does your knee fall too far to the side in Dancer (Standing Bow Pulling) pose and what exactly is going on in Rabbit pose? In this unique workshop, students can actually ask questions and get hands-on adjustments for every Bikram pose. You'll leave truly ready to tackle your next 90-minute 105 degree class with new confidence and enthusiasm. Saturday, February 6, 3:15pm at Om on the Range. $30.
Intro to Chanting. If you're curious about other aspects of yoga than just the physical practice, head up to Edgewater for this intro to chanting workshop at Chi-Town Shakti. This one-hour workshop covers the whys and how's of chanting to bring focus and happiness into your life. Saturday, February 20, 4pm at Chi-Town Shakti. $10-$15.
If none of these workshops caught your attention, be sure to check the events page on the website of your local studio. These are just five of dozens of workshops happening over the next month, so something is bound to speak to you. Also, be on the lookout for the Valentine's yoga workshop/event guide coming soon!
