A Healthy Holiday Gift Guide
Got a fitness fanatic on your holiday shopping list this year? If you're looking for the perfect gift for the person who never misses their weekly yoga classes, freaks out if they can't make it to the gym or is committing to a healthier lifestyle in 2010, check out my picks for functional, unique and fun healthy holiday gifts for 2009.

Get the healthiest person on your holiday list a gift card to me&goji and they can choose their perfect pre or post workout snack mix from over 50 ingredients (including gluten-free and a raw muesli mix). The me&goji website is fun to navigate and informative, too. Ever wonder why pumpkin seeds are so darn good for you? Find out here. You can also make your own mix, customize the cereal capsule and send it their way. From $10.
Warm, soft and form-fitting, the lululemon Company Sweater is perfect for the professional dancer (or the private dancer) on your list. It's great for rehearsals, warming up before yoga or a casual date to the movies. $118.
Do you have a friend who's had yoga on their to-try list forever but has never given it a shot? Lots of great studios around the city offer intro to yoga sessions, a 4-5 week series of classes that begin with basic poses and terminology to prep them for the wonderful world of yoga. Try Yogaview, Moksha, Tejas or Nature Yoga. $50-$60.
Sure, sports or deep tissue massage is a good choice for someone who hasn't had a lot of bodywork, but if you want to give something unique and therapeutic this year, go for a Thai massage session at the sexiest spa in Chicago, Allyu. In Thai massage, recipients are fully clothed and lay on a mat while the practitioner uses their hands, knees, feet and legs to deeply stretch the body. It improves circulation, relaxation, range of motion, flexibility and it feels amazing. $90-$125.
The Yoga Kit, from local and green company Natural Fitness, includes a natural rubber Journey mat, a bamboo block and hemp strap, everything a yoga newbie needs to start a practice. $62.50.
Know a yoga lover with fickle knees? These cool tights from Nike just might help. The Stitch a Fit has quilted padding at knees for those deep lunge positions. Plus, they're made of moisture wicking cotton and recycled polyester. $50.
A durable, stylish gym bag is a must for any Chicagoan who relies on public transportation to get to and from the gym or yoga studio. The Puddlejumper Bag from Lug is water repellant, comes in a variety of colors and has tons of compartments, including a ventilated back zipper section for shoes or wet hot yoga clothes. $75.
Lots of great books have recently been published that promote a healthy, meat-free and conscious way of eating. My personal favorite is Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future by David Wolfe. There's also Alicia Silverstone's new book, the Kind Diet and of course, I coudn't mention healthy lifestyle books without a shot out to the Thrive Diet. $10-$20.
For just $10 a month, your lucky friend will receive unlimited streaming mp3 classes and 6 class downloads of their choice from YogaDownload. Perfect for someone with an unconventional schedule that makes it hard for them to make classes or for someone like me who too often ends up watching workout DVDs instead of following along. $10.
