Forget 50s kitsch, modern hula hooping is all about free movement, muscle toning and mind-body connection. Two of the leaders in this new(ish) movement are Jonathan Baxter and Ann Humphreys of The Hoop Path. They teach classes in their home state of North Carolina and travel the country revitalizing those bored to death with their usual workout routine.
The Hoop Path comes to Chicago

Heather Crosby of Chicago's Hooper Power couldn't speak
highly enough of the duo. "The Hoop Path has helped me take my own
personal hoop practice to the next level and beyond. Baxter has a gift for
articulating philosophies that unlock the potential in movement, flow,
exploration, imagination and confidence with the hoop."
That's a pretty big deal, considering Heather's pretty bad ass with the hoop herself. In one of her workshops, we hooped while wearing a blindfold (which she learned from Baxter) to bring the connection to the core. The class, filled with all ages and all sizes, began to understand the relationship with the hoop and suddenly, even those that had never hooped before had the movement.
I've done hoop workshops that were just girly giggle fests, which is fun, but if you want a physical and mental challenge, don't miss this rare opportunity.
The Hoop Path teaches beginner-advanced workshops at Visceral Dance September 18-20. Find out more here.
