Marian "The Duke" Hossa is saddling up preparing for his debut with the Chicago Blackhawks. The sharp shooter needs a sidekick. Who better than Patrick Kane? The most accurate puck slinger on the Hawks deserves the opportunity to land the most wanted reward.

By splitting the duo of Kane and Jonathan Toews to open the season, Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville left himself a couple of options when pondering Hossa's future partner. He seperated the young All-Stars knowing he needed to achieve balance on his top two lines, but also with the purpose of adding Hossa come late-November. Did Coach Q already know with whom Hossa would skate, or was the plan to wait to see which line needed the boost? Either way, I predict Kane will find himself getting acquainted with Hossa in a couple of weeks.

By the numbers, Kane's had an average start to the season. The right winger has four goals and leads the team with 11 assists. Consider that his centerman, Dave Bolland, has been crippled with a bad back and Kane's numbers look a little better. Add in the fact that his other linemate, Dustin Byfuglien, has limited offensive capabilites and Kane's point-a-game production looks pretty darn good. How good would Kane's numbers be with Hossa on the other side of the offensive zone?

Kane has proven himself as one of the best circle-to-circle passers in the NHL. Unfortunately, Big Buff is not a consistent enought threat in the middle of the ice and is more comfortable either directly in front of the net or at the blueline. Plus, the converted defenseman still lacks the innate offensive instincts Kane requires from a linemate. Hossa is everything Byfuglien is not, and then some. Kane needs a finisher and Hossa has proven his worth scoring over 40 goals three times during an NHL season.

The line of Bolland-Kane-Byfuglien started the season strong in the two games against Florida in Finland. Since returning stateside, the line's production has done a slow fade. In fact, add together the two games in Helsinki with the miracle comeback against Calgary, and those three games account for nearly half of Kane's point production (7 pts.) on the season. Plus, Kane has added his most recent assists while skating with Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg. Kane's feed to Sharp netted the gamewinner a week ago against Montreal and he added two assists Friday night against Colorado with Versteeg as his centerman.

It had to be refreshing for Kane to skate with other forwards with a comparable skill level. With Kane as the only legitimate offensive threat on the ice, opposing defenses have been able to double-team the slight 20-year old. Add Hossa on the other wing and the double-teams stop. Kane will then benefit with more open ice to operate and he will find it easier to create his own scoring chances.

When healthy, the Toews line has been the most consistent offensive threat for the Blackhawks. The captain has good chemistry with Sharp and the other wing is interchangeable between Versteeg and Andrew Ladd. Plus, the Toews line will benefit if Kane and Hossa draw the opposition's top defensive pairing which generally had been reserved for Toews & Co. earlier in the year. You can make an argument for pairing Toews and Hossa, I just believe the benefits are greater if Quenneville matches Hossa with Kane.

As for the technicality that Hossa and Kane are both right wingers and left handed shooters, I'd prefer Hossa remain on the right side of the zone as he will be the more consistent scorer. Kane's passing ability will not waver no matter his positioning and he has shown the ability to create plays from any spot on the ice. Don't read too much into the reports that Hossa was playing center last week during Blackhawks' practice. The former Red Wing is a winger and that's were he will be playing for Quenneville and the Hawks.

As for the centerman to complete the Kane-Hossa line? All depends on the health of Bolland. There is speculation that Bolland may opt for back surgery which would shelve the center for a couple of months. If Bolland is out for an extended period, there may have to be a casting call for the role. Consider Thomas Kopecky a dark horse candidate for the part. Kopecky would add some toughness to the line and Quenneville would have to be intrigued at reuniting Hossa and Kopecky who are former Detroit teammates and fellow countrymen.

Most importantly, the Blackhawks must heal for Quenneville to construct the lines as he envisioned when Hossa was signed this past summer. The Hawks will take a step in the right direction as both Toews and Ben Eager are expected to return to the Hawks lineup Monday night at the United Center against the Los Angeles Kings. I'd say I'm excited to watch Toews and Eager in action again, but I have DirecTV. Someone will have to let me know what happens.

Mark, you hit right on. Well thought out, and well written. Thanks.

So if I read it correctly:
Toews-Versteeg/Ladd-Sharp
Kopecky-Hossa-Kane

Who are your other two lines?

I would also consider Byfuglien or Brouwer occasionally with Toews.

Looking forward to seeing how things shape up tonight vs. LA.

I have to agree that Kane does deserve this opportunity and that this is a well thought out argument. Whether he was aware of blogosphere criticism or not, Kane has addressed a lot of the charges leveled at him and has been a hard worker on ice this year. He's given his teammates a ton of opportunities to score and I don't think it's a mark on him that they haven't finished them.

I still think we are a long way from seeing the near top of what Kane is capable of. Putting him with Hossa just might be the thing that really opens his game up.

Byfuglien - Toews - Sharp
Hossa - Bolland - Kane
Ladd - Madden - VERSTEEG!
Eager - Kopecky - Brouwer

Ebbett/Fraser jettisoned off to space, unless Bolland has the dreaded Daze surgery.

Versteeg can try playing that "Havlat" role on the 3rd line. I think him, Madden, and Ladd would make beautiful music together. Q can roll 4 lines out there everynight with this roster.
