John Hughes - Who knew he was from Detroit?
There is something about death that makes people more interesting. Where did John Hughes rank on the search engines last week before his sudden passing on Thursday? Where will he rank this weekend?
As many of us certainly did, I explored Google to learn what I could about the man who brought us such '80's classics as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "The Breakfast Club." Knowing that Hughes attended high school in the north 'burbs, I just assumed the Hollywood director was a born and raised Chicago kid.
Turns out he was from Detroit. And the ties stuck.
"I grew up in the Detroit area, so I'm sort of happy right now," Hughes said to NHL.com at the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in January with the Red Wings leading. "Gordie Howe was my hero growing up. We listened to games on the radio."
Hughes was a recluse who rarely granted interview requests. His comments from the Winter Classic was the most recent quotes I could find.
A former Chicago Blackhawks season ticket holder, Hughes was also back on the Hawks bandwagon after the recent success.
"We're going to re-up now," Hughes said. "It's amazing what Rocky Wirtz and his organization has done for the team. There is just so much affection for the Hawks that was pent up. I think that's why there was anger about the Hawks. The team is beloved."
Certainly not "stop-the-presses" news. Just a little tidbit for those still mourning the Chicago icon's death.

Mark...so you and Mike ARE a tag team! I shoulda known.
OK...you two HAVE to have your own show. I got it..."Mike and Mark in The Morning". Or "Mark and Mike in The Morning". Whattya think?
But seriously, folks...
Mark, thanks for your writing. Solid article, as always, from you.
And I'm sorry I called you 'Mike' in my comments on your excellent Stan Bowman piece. It's those cockamamie postage stamp pix of you two...ya'd think youse wuz family or sumpin.
Look forward to reading you and Mike this season...and BTW, if youse don't mind my axin...do you think the Blackhawks can finally get back to the top?
As Mike knows, I been waitin' on 'em since '61, bro. Heck, we still have the RCA Victor TV (it still has the decal of the little doggie looking into the gramophone speaker just above the channel dial) I watched the games on. With Foster Hewitt calling the play by play. Who needs that newfangled 'hi-def' anyway?
Have a great one.

I've been called a lot worse than "Mike." Don't worry about it. Thanks for the kind words. I feel pretty good about the prospects of the upcoming season. I remain skeptical of Huet and the defense. I would like to see the Hawks add some more depth on the blue line.
Anyway, it's still fun talking hockey on a hot summer day in August.
