Guess when Jake Peavy will debut with the White Sox

So I decided it was time to have a little fun with the whole Jake Peavy drama.

I've gone on record saying he wasn't going to pitch for the Sox until September, and now here's my official prediction along with total wins in 2009:

White Sox debut: Sept. 11 vs. Angels
2009 wins: Two

OK, now it's your turn. Let me see your predictions then we'll come back and take a look at how we did in a few weeks.

9/3 vs. The Cubs!

That would be cool, yet a really questionable move for the Sox. Last thing they need is for Peavy to get all pumped and try to over-do-it in his first start.

I think it's time to take the baby shoes off of these pitchers. If Peavy isn't allowed to get pumped why the hell would we want him? Big pitchers show up in big moments and it's not a bad thing to ask / expect them to. We got Peavy to be an ace, we should not be cautious about asking him to do so.

I think letting him pitch his first game vs an NL team with the pitcher in the lineup as he is accustomed might be the best thing they could do

Rick said:

I would have to disagree. The problem with his foot occurred while he was RUNNING THE BASES. That seems like we are asking for him to re-aggravate things and we shouldn't take that chance. I hope the Sox are smarter than trying to show up the Cubs. Who the hell cares about them anyway?

coming off a heal injury, the _last_ thing you will ever see if a pitcher with $52M left on his contract do is make his first start in a game where he might have to run the bases.

I am going to say September 19th against the Royals.

let's not waste Peavy on the Cubs. Back of the rotation against those bums.

rustysurf83 said:

Danks will go against the Cubs hopefully, he's done well against them so far this year.
As far as Peavy is concerned I'll say 8/30 vs. the Yanks. 4 regular season wins, maybe 5.

Jack McDowell said:

You're going for it! That would make the trade worth it for this year is he was to get 5 wins. I guess he'll just step in and become aL pitcher of the month according to that assessment!

Hell yes he will! lol.

9/3 vs. the Cubs . . . in 2010.

Mario Scalise said:

Looking at the schedule for around the time he's due to pitch ... man, talk about being thrown into the fire. From August 24 to September 7, Sox opponents are either the Twins, Yankees, Red Sox or Cubs. Welcome to the AL, Mr. Peavy.

Jimmy Greenfield said:

Come on Mario, take a stand. What's your prediction!

I'm going with Aug. 31 at Minnesota and he wins three games this season. Then his ankle falls off.

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

Quit poppin' off boss, I don't see your prediction in here!

Jimmy Greenfield said:

user-pic

Hey, what do you mean! I went with Aug. 31 at Minnesota, a full 12 days before your prediction. I'll be happy to come back here and gloat when he starts that game

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

My fault, I was just lazy and didn't want to scroll!

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

Hey let's get realistic. If he was facing the A's and the Royals it would still be a "welcome to the AL" moment. No pitcher for that automatic out and no more 8 hole hitters expanding the zone!

Mario Scalise said:

user-pic

True.

As for my prediction. If the rotation schedule goes as it is now, then I say August 29th against the Yanks. My hope is that it's later, which means the Sox, and the fifth starter(s) are hanging in there. But I fear Peavy starting on the 29th, getting hit really hard, and that just leads to a series of rough starts and an eventual injury. Is that prediction, or just pessimism?

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

All that and you didn't vote for # of wins!

PawsOut said:

So before he has pitched a single inning you already have him being an abject failure? Why? I understand he's hurt and he may not be as good away from Petco, but isn't he better than Clayton Richard? Isn't he better than Jose Contreras? Why would he all of a sudden become a horrible pitcher when he has never been one in his career. I'm not saying you have to see the glass as half-full, but for god's sake, stop seeing it as full of poison!

rustysurf83 said:

user-pic

I'd like to see him get a shot at one of the Metrodome games since apparently no other pitcher on the team has been capable of winning there for what seems like the previous 3 years.

9/5 vs Boston
3 Wins (Seattle, Minnesota, Detroit)

August 29th against the Yanks in NY. Then he would follow up against the cubs in chicago

Noneck said:

8/31 vs. Twinks 1st game in the last series in dome. This series is a lot more important than the yanks. I say he will win 4 games.

Jack, I am afraid if he is not going to pitch till 9/11 he wont pitch at all this year because the Sox will be toast by then.

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

We'll have to see. That is why I thought the timing was so weird. we'll have to see where exactly he is at. And believe me...you cannot trust all the B.S. that the media will report! Behind the scenes things are always very different!

LeadDog said:

09/08 against Oakland. Why? The Boston series will be sold out...Peavey will help draw against Oakland. He'll make 5 starts and win 3-4. Cynical? Yes. KW will say cautious. I'm a Sox fan...have been for 40 years, so I know how they think. $9 seats to honor MB? C'mon...

PawsOut said:

Jeez Jack, are you sure it was Dr. Andrews that screwed up your elbow and not Jake Peavy? Haha what's with all the hate?

Really, I understand being cautious and not going crazy over the move, he's just one guy and he's hurt. But I really do like the move. I don't care how much money my team spends and I've always liked Peavy's arm. I think he's going to be very similar to Vasquez but I think Jake will win some games where Javy choked. That's a plus addition in my book.

Anyhow, my prediction is he will make his first start against the Cubs (9/3 I believe?) I also think he'll win 3 games.

Awesome to talk Sox baseball with one of my all time favorites!

lesnessman said:

user-pic

The Sox need to worry about the Twinkies and Tigers. They have to change their approach in the dome, so I predict that he will be back August 31 in Minni. That will also allow him to go in the final weekend at Detroit.
I'll put him down for 3 big wins in the regular season, and 3 more in the playoffs!!!!!!! As you said..."The Closer"

lesnessman said:

user-pic

Yikes...just realized that I made the same prediction as Greenfield.

Jimmy Greenfield said:

user-pic

Yeah, you're going to want to rethink it now.

Scam said:

user-pic

I'm going with Sep 2nd at MN. So with about 6 starts I'll give him 3 wins and 2 losses, 1 ND. He will also have 1 win in the playoffs.

I also think that if he wins zero games this year, but comes to spring training healthy next year, the trade was still worth it.

dcrosko said:

9/11 2 Wins

Shinons said:

user-pic

Ozzie said the goal is for Yanks series, you pointed to the 25th being his third rehab start. Sounds good to me. I'll take his first start against the Yankees on August 30th. For wins, he would get six starts under that scenario and I'll say he gets a win in four of them.

Seems like a bit of a best case scenario, but I think it's realistic.

so much for predictions...

it would be the very definition of irony if he debuted against the chubs.

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

That's still a handful of possible dates...and that's without setbacks, rainouts etc.!!! Still a guessing game!

part-time pariah said:

user-pic

jack, does it feel like they're rushing him at all? i almost get that sense with all the stories about him being on the DL and 'not ready yet' stuff...

Jack McDowell said:

user-pic

The reason I have been somewhat skeptical is the stuff I had read all along here in San Diego and the fact that he hadn't been off the mound in such a long time. Obviously they know better about the true state of his ankle and arm. He should be ready to go by when they are projecting provided everything goes smoothly. Not sure how strong he will be initially seeing as his first minor league start will probably be three innings, then get to 5 and then let him go as long as he can. That's not much build up and different than pennant race intensity no matter how hard you go at it!

Shinons said:

user-pic

But might he have been back quicker if the Padres were relevant? He referred to his ankle as a "non-issue" during his bullpen session and said that he's totally painfree on the mound, so that makes me more hopeful.

But good point though, no matter how it works out if they rush the way they're talking about he's not going to get much time to prepare for the likes of the Yankees lineup.

part-time pariah said:

user-pic

yep, it's good to hear the ankle is all good, but what about the arm after such inactivity? THAT is the part that freaks me out.

i couldn't imagine having to pitch to dudes in AAA and then fly up to the bigs in the thick of it to pitch.

i wonder if any of the criticism gets to the guy (pitchers park, nl west, etc.).

Scam said:

From reading these comments you'd think we were talking about Mark Prior. Why don't we give him a chance before being so pessimistic.

Jack McDowell said:

Lets forget the date Peavy is coming back for right now. This team right now does not have the killer instinct to be a World Series contender! They have had the two best American League teams by the throat and have not been able to finish either series with favorable pitching match ups. This is deja vu all over again from 2008. The Sox give us something to get excited about, and BAM the pitching or the offense goes in a serious three or four game slump. Hopefully Peavy can give the Sox that killer instinct that they are missing to become an elite team. As for right now my gut feeling is he will come back the last week of August against Boston. The only reason being is that Kenny Williams seems to know the prognosis of pitchers better than most general managers.

Jimmymac120912 said:

user-pic

Jack,
It is great to talk to you about a different baseball topic outside of the pitch count and how overrated the closer is. From what I hear Peavy is a warrior and could be the leader that the Sox pitching staff is looking for.

P.S. I am sorry for the making that Peavy comment during the third consecutive Mark Buehrle appreciation week.

palehoze said:

Peavy will be back Aug 30 against the Yanks. I say he wins 4 games in the month of September and will be in top form for October. I'm counting on the fact that he doesn't have an arm injury that he's coming back from, so I think if his achilles is pain free and he can go, his control and his stuff will be there.

Of course Peavy will pitch (DA)..! GM Kenny Williams is on the Hot Seat for this trade.. KW will have him pitch even if it is with his feet...Peavy loses 2 games goes on the injured list out for the year

8/29 vs Yanks (which leads to next start vs Cubs!)...I'm going to be optimistic and call for 5 wins from Peavy
