Finally! Gays and Lesbians Get Hospital Visitation Rights!

While Obama may be dragging his feet a little too much on some issues affecting our community, he made up for the lethargic pace today!  Obama signed a memo today requiring hospitals to allow gays and lesbians non-family hospital visitation and the ability to establish power of attorney with their partners.  While the memo does not go public until Friday, I'm already giddy knowing I am that much closer to having equal rights as my straight friends.

It seems like common sense to allow those closest to a person the right to offer love and support in those times of need.  It's a right that I feel many people take for granted.  How many of us have had loved ones fall ill only to find that once they were admitted to the hospital we were nothing more than a "friend" in the hospitals eyes.  If you recall, a lesbian was refused visitation of her dying partner in Florida just last year.

Out of all the struggles the GLBT community has ahead of it, power of attorney and hospital visitation has always been one that I felt was most important.  Sure, I want marriage equality, and Don't Ask Don't Tell is deplorable.  But when it comes down to it, this is the one inequality that truly works to separate gay couples in a times of need.

We still have a ways to go before we are no longer second class citizens in the eyes of the law, but its one step closer to equality.  GOBAMA!
