Recuperation After Liposuction
Dear Dr. Jeff,
What is the recuperation
period for liposuction for a 50-year-old woman who is in relatively good shape
and who exercises frequently? How long should the process take for liposuction
of the stomach region, hips, and flanks?
Thank you.

Dear Feeling Fat,
The recuperation period
following liposuction varies based on age, sex, extent of the procedure, pre-op
condition, medical history, etc., but will certainly be shorter and better
tolerated by the patient who is in good shape, exercises frequently, and
approaches the procedure with realistic expectations.
Based on the details you provided, you will likely need to
wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks following the procedure but may be
able to participate in most activities within 2 weeks. Based on the fact that you're in
relatively good shape, you will probably not require extensive liposuction;
thus, bruising, swelling, and tenderness will likely not be a major issue
post-operatively. I suspect this
procedure may be just what you need to be "feeling fit."
Thanks for your question!
Dr. Jeff
