Arresting Tales

Have you seen this man?

No?  Me either.

I found this police composite sketch, along with a few other creepy and hilarious examples, here:

12 Most Bizarre Police Sketches Ever

I'm not sure if these are really the most bizarre police sketches ever, but they are pretty entertaining.

I remember a legendary Identi-Kit  at my department, from before I got hired--the detective had been called in late at night, maybe after having a few drinks, and he assembled a composite that was vivid in its detail.  Except that it was missing a nose.  There was just a blank spot in the middle of the face where a nose should have been.  None of the old timers were able to tell me if an arrest was ever made in that case.

At least that tipsy detective put some facial detail in his composite.  Not like the artist who came up with this sketch:

The use of the Identi-Kit goes back decades.  You can see a reference to its use here, in an old bit from Beyond the Fringe:

Remember: "Once you've captured the criminal face, the other criminal parts aren't hard to find."

Hi Joe,

Thanks to you I now have plenty of ideas for my Halloween Costume. Seriously, while working with the CAPS Program we staged a fake purse snatching at one of our beat meetings. After the event and after we stopped the vigilanties from beating the poor CPD officer that posed as the snatcher, we asked everyone to describe the suspect. We gave them a sheet with info that was needed to give CPD a description they could work with. Only 3 out of the 20 or so people that saw the event gave an accurate description. Go figure.....

Do identi-kits really help in finding a suspect? I remember years ago the sketch of the uni bomber looked nothing like the sketch!

Hi Joe,

One more comment. I believe what you do with this Blob is very good in helping to show that law enforcement officers are human. They put their pants on the same way, they love their families and they even love the 2 legged and 4 legged animals. You give us the bad stuff, the good stuff and a few laughs. Thanks Joe.
