With its first store opening in Seattle's Pike Place Market in 1971, Starbucks is now a part of our daily routine, and has changed the way we think about coffee. Hungry for more Starbucks has taken on a new challenge: tea. Yes, you can buy a cup of hot tea at Starbucks, but at its newest creation, Teavana, you won't find coffee on the menu.
Opening its first two Teavana Fine Teas + Tea Bar in Seattle and New York City, Teavana just opened its third location in Chicago on April 29. Strategically placed at 3428 Southport Ave., a neighborhood street that continues to blossom, Teavana will have no problem being welcomed in Chicago.
The store, which greets you with tea accessories followed by light wood, inviting sitting tables, and a familiar visual of tea blends housed along a wall that are colorfully placed, won't remind you of a Starbucks. Teavana welcomes you at a slower pace compared to a Starbucks and invites you to linger a bit longer. Though Starbucks may have convinced you that it is an expert on coffee, doesn't mean Starbucks is a novice when it comes to tea. When Starbucks first began, it was Starbucks Coffee and Tea, but coffee took the lead.
Starbucks too will sell Teavana. Oprah Winfrey and Starbucks have collaborated and are now selling Oprah Chai Tea Latte at Starbucks and Teavana. In addition to this chai tea latte being flavorful and fresh, Starbucks is also giving back through the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. This foundation provides funding for The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls and strives to help its graduates attend colleges and university. For every Oprah Chai product sold, Starbucks will donate to the foundation.
Beginning with a store in Seattle, New York and now Chicago, Starbucks plans to open 1,000 stores in the United States and spread the tea vibe internationally too. Starbucks is determined to do for tea what it has done for coffee. Launching Teavana could bode well for Starbucks. Will there soon be a tea store on every corner?
