Chicago is blessed with a fair number of opera companies. Who, for most of the Spring have been stepping outside of the strict definition of opera, turning it into something else. Opera Cabal presented "usw", skewing more performance art, and the Lyric had its Damnation of Faust, which was more oratorio. Now Chicago Opera Vanguard presents Winterreise, a song cycle by Franz Schubert, but fully staged with added dancers and an actor.
This is the second of three weekends of the run. The first weekend got a positive review by Bryant Manning, calling it an "artful, imaginative staging" of Schubert's masterpiece. I will be attending on Sunday if you want to join me--leave a comment and I'll look for you. Last weekend sold out on Friday and Saturday nights, so buy tickets online.
