Veterans Day: Honoring those who served with words, flags and more

Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served our nation and, as the US Department of Veterans Affairs says, "a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good." Ceremonies and observances take place around the country and around the globe as other countries observe Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day, on November 11.

One observance is the Healing Field of Honor in Naperville, Illinois. It is a display of 2,015 American flags has been posted into the ground. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War and honor veterans, and also includes a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

It's a very moving to see more than 2,000 American flags blowing in the breeze and even more so to see the notes and items left by family members who sponsored each flag. Here are some photos I took when my daughter and I visited this weekend, along with quotes about veterans.
