A new little prince or princess is on the way! Buckingham Palace confirmed that Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is expecting.
“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby,” the office said in a statement.
Unfortunately, Kate has been hospitalized with Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which means pretty nasty morning sickness that has her needing additional hydration and nutrients, but all indications are that she will be fine and the pregnancy is in its early stages. The couple married last April, and my tween was very excited about their wedding and is a Kate fan. I'm excited to give her this news when school is out.
When talking about princesses last month and how Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said princess is not a career option, my tween brought up Kate as a counterpoint to the Justice's argument. While I pointed out that the chances of becoming a princess are still slim to none, especially for an American, I was amused that my kid had no problem fighting gavel with tiara. We did talk about how Kate graduated from St. Andrew's University and had a job and was self sufficient before becoming a princess. I expect that this latest news will lead to some interesting discussions about how parenthood fits into the career of a princess. It will even more likely spark conversations about what would make a great name for a baby who will likely be Queen one day.
I completely understand that our country went to war a few centuries ago so that we didn't have to care about the royals. But they're fun, to both me and my tween. I remember being a tween when Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were born, and being decidedly disappointed about their names. I'm a sucker for royal naming, and the trend among European families to hold off on the announcement is a brilliant marketing scheme that sucks me in every time. I'm counting on Will and Kate to come up with a good one. Think they'll honor William's mother, the late Princess Diana?
For general amusement, in our house we will have a royal baby pool, in which the entrant guesses the birth date, sex, weight, and name of said new royal being. I'd like to open it up to all Tween Us readers, as well, with the winner getting, well, lots of honor, glory, bragging rights and a big shout out from Tween Us. I realize that the palace has not commented on a due date, and that's what makes this that much more fun. Do you think she was pregnant in Asia when she was politely turning down wine and opting for water? As for the name, if you guess any of the 15 names the child will certainly have, you get a point, if you guess the first name or the name by which the child will be called (seen Prince Henry/Harry).
If you want to join in, please leave your guesses in the comment section or on the Tween Us Facebook page. Please be sure to "like" us while you're there!
